Chapter 1: What an idiot

Chapter Text

Maka had just officially finished her first project of the semester (so what if it was only assigned yesterday?), and she was on her way to have a well needed dose of caffeine.

She had been settling in nicely at Death Meister University. It was truly a good choice for her. They had the best English program in the whole country and it was relatively close to home, which meant that she didn't have to spend a fortune just to drive home to see her stupid dad.

Death Meister University was surprisingly peaceful, and despite its name, no death happened on campus yet. Sure the university was busy but most people kept to themselves.

Maka's favourite part of the university was the on campus coffee shop. Sure Maka hated coffee, but that didn't mean that she couldn't enjoy the occasional green tea.

Green tea was her favourite because it reminded her of when she was little and would go on tea dates with her mom. However, that didn't really happen anymore since Maka's mom decided to get up and leave without a single explanation. Nowadays the only reason she knows that her mom is even alive is because of the odd post card that she gets sent.

Her mom leaving never made Maka hate her. Maka just missed being able to talk to her mom. That's why she loved green tea so much, because it felt like she could be with her mom while she was drinking it.

Maka's walk was peaceful. The weather at DMU was basically warm all year round on the account that it was basically in a desert. Considering that, the DMU had a surprising amount of foliage. There were trees everywhere and vines climbing up the walls of the buildings.

As Maka stepped into the cafe she was instantly greeted with smiling faces. She wasn't exactly popular because of how hot tempered she was, but she tried her best to be friendly to her classmates, and often shared her notes with whoever needed them.

She walked up to the counter and ordered her drink: a medium green tea with cream, and went to sit with her friend Tsubaki, who also just so happened to be her roommate. Tsubaki was her closest confidant, and she often found herself talking to her about embarrassing stuff that she would've never trusted with anyone else.

After a while of waiting for her drink to be called, she finally saw her drink be put on the counter. “Green tea for-”, and within a second her drink was stolen by some stupid boy with white hair. “Thanks man.” Who the hell did that guy think he was?

“Hey I think you made my drink wrong, I didn't ask for cream in this”, remarked the white haired boy with a disgusted face.

“Maybe cuz that’s my drink douchebag!”, argued Maka. Did this guy have a total of two brain cells or something? Maka's name was clearly written right on the goddam cup plain as the eye could see.

The boy turned around with a confused look on his face, and as soon as he glanced at her he immediately looked embarrassed. The boy then had the audacity to say, “Oh whoops do you still want it?” No, Maka obviously didn't want the drink that this random boy's mouth had been on.

“You seriously think that I want a drink that a stranger drank out of? How dense are you?” Sure that was a little rude but come on!

“Oh sorry.” He looked a little frazzled by the whole situation. “You could just have mine and put cream in it. I don't mind”, offered the boy with an awkward smile on his face.

“Fine I guess that's okay”. Maka didn't necessarily like confrontation, but when it came to green tea she would absolutely beat some ass if the opportunity arose.

Maka stomped back to the table where Tsubaki was uncomfortably sitting. Tsubaki hated being the centre of attention, so she typically kept to herself, which was hard to do when Maka was your best friend. “That was a little harsh, Maks. Don't you think so?” uttered Tsubaki.

“Yeah yeah, maybe it was a little bit ruder than I meant to be but come on! That guy was an idiot!” stated Maka, with a louder voice than intended.

“Okay, come on Maka, let's get you some fresh air so you can cool down. How about we head back to the dorm.” said Tsubaki with a nurturing voice. Tsubaki loved to gentle parent Maka, and she was ashamed to admit that it actually worked most of the time.

When they got back to the dorm Maka immediately flopped onto her bed and became entranced in her book. “Maka, I’m gonna go down to the kitchen. Do you want me to heat you up some ramen or something?” Tsubaki always knew how to raise Maka's spirits.

“Yes please! Just make sure that you don’t cook it for too long.”

Maka continued reading her book but after a few minutes her eyes drifted to her empty green tea cup. Hmm so that guy's name was Soul, that's kind of an odd name.
