He drew a deep, uneven breath before beginning to move toward her with slow, deliberate steps. Only when scarcely an inch remained between them did he finally stop.
“I would sooner allow myself to be utterly ruined than endure a world in which you are no longer mine to cherish, Penelope. That is a loss I find myself wholly incapable of surviving.”
“But we are both engaged to other people, Colin!” Penelope cried breathlessly. “We are to be married, to entirely different people—”
“I do not care!” Colin interrupted fiercely.
He stepped even closer, desperation burning plainly within his eyes.
