Work Text:

Andy opened the door to the townhouse, stepping into the spacious hallway. “Darling?!”, she called into the house, dropping her things on a chair in front of the closet.

“In here love!”, Miranda called out of the den upstairs.

Climbing the stairs to the first floor, she stopped in the doorway to the den, where her wife was sitting. “Hello darling.”, the brunette muttered, stepping closer to the older woman to lean down and capture her lips in a kiss. “I missed you.”, the editor whispered against her wife’s lips.

They shared a small smile, before the journalist dropped down next to her lover. Sighing, she let her head drop back and opened her arms for her wife to curl against her.

After a few minutes of silence, Andy pushed a few stray strands out of her lovers face and kissed her temple.

“Are you alright?”, she asked softly, pulling back to get a better look at the woman in her arms.

“Yes, I just…I’ve been thinking.”, Miranda replied, grabbing her wife’s hand to play with the gold wedding band adorning her ring finger. “What have you been thinking about my love?”, Andy asked in turn, peppering kisses over the older woman’s face.

“A few years ago on this day, I was supposed to have another baby. I…I miscarried at 14 weeks. The girls didn’t understand back then, they were only five. They thought their brother didn’t want anything to do with them, leaving them before they were able to meet him. My then husband, he didn’t support me through the miscarriage. He said I was whining too much.”, Miranda explained, her voice getting quieter with every second.

Andy’s hand stilled her previous ministrations, that had been to run her fingers through silky white strands. “Why have you never told me?”, the younger woman murmured gently, continuing to rake her fingers through her wife’s hair.

“I don’t know, I guess I just didn’t take it that seriously.”, Miranda replied, her voice thick with emotion.

“You know how serious this is my love.”, the brunette argued, gripping the slender hand that had been lying on her abdomen, “You know how much it affected us both when it didn’t work out the first few times.”

The older woman hid her face in the crook of her wife’s neck, silent tears running down her cheek.

“He always told me to get a grip on myself and finally get over it.”, Miranda choked out, wrapping her arms a little tighter around Andy. “Oh baby, it’s okay. He’s not here anymore, I’m here now. You have me and the twins and of course this little one.”, the brunette calmly whispered, placing her wife’s hand on her belly.

The editor lifted her head slightly, only to slip further down her wife’s body until she was kneeling in front of her on the floor.

Pressing her cheek into Andy’s soft baby belly, she sobbed quietly into her shirt, as the younger woman ran her fingers through silvery strands of hair. “I’m here love.”, the journalist whispered over and over, finally calming her wife after a few heartfelt minutes.

Miranda slowly lifted her eyes to look up at the woman that she loved so dearly.

“Is the baby already kicking?”, the white haired woman murmured, wiping at the tear streaks on her cheeks.

“Sometimes I can feel this kind of flutter, that’s when the baby’s kicking I think.”, Andy told her wife, delighting in the way it made her smile, before gently cupping her chin, “I love you Miranda and I hope you know that you can always talk to me, no matter how unimportant you might be thinking it is.” “I love you too my darling, so so much.”, Miranda whispered, pushing herself off the floor, until she could place a chaste kiss against plump lips.

Andy happily wrapped her arms around the editor, catching her in another kiss, softly sighing into her hot mouth.

A smile lit up the older woman’s features, as she got so wrapped up in their kissing, she thought she might go crazy. Placing her hand on Andy’s small baby bump, she nuzzled her face back into the crook of her wife’s neck.

“I think we should tell the girls today.”, Andy said, smiling at the way it made her favorite person happier than anything.

“Then we shall do just that.”, Miranda replied, happily wrapping up the brunette in another round of kissing.

The door slammed open, squealing echoing through the house as Caroline and Cassidy arrived from school.

“Mommy, Andy we’re home!”, Caroline yelled, dropping her things on the floor. Cassidy followed suit, before they both ran up the stairs.

“They’re like a hoard of elephants.”, Miranda rolled her eyes, as she heard the twins running up the stairs.

Sliding into the den, they both wrapped their arms, firstly around their mom, before pushing her away and clinging to Andy.

“How was school girls?”, the brunette asked them, as they curled up against her sides. Miranda chuckled softly, when she dropped back down next to them on the couch.

“Oh, it was great, but you know we had a big fight with our teacher. He said some bad things about our family.”, Cassidy explained, scrunching up her nose in the cutest way possible.

“Listen girls, we need to tell you something.”, Andy started seriously, gently pushing the twins back a bit, so she could really look at them.

Gathering all her courage and breath, she looked at them smiling.

“Are you pregnant?”, Caroline interrupted her, just as she was about to start talking. Both Miranda and Andy stared surprised at the twins. They had expected a tantrum or literally anything else, but the girls already knowing was not on their cards.

“I-yes I am pregnant, but how did you know?”, Andy asked them flabbergasted, the twins smiling their widest grins ever.

“Well at first we thought it was mom, because why did you have to help her put on those bowling shoes when we went to the bowling hall? Then we thought about it further and realized that mom was too old so it couldn’t be.”, Cassidy continued for her sister, Miranda gasping at the last sentence, “But we still paid attention, so we noticed the signs and concluded that you’re pregnant.”

“Me? Too old?!”, the editor exclaimed exasperated, as soon as Cassidy finished.

“Oh hush darling, you know they don’t mean it that way.”, Andy defended the girls, smiling at them.

“Can we feel the baby?”, Caroline asked curiously, eyeing her stepmothers baby belly suspiciously. “Not yet, but in a few weeks you’ll be able to feel it.”, the brunette explained, ruffling their hair and pressing kisses against their foreheads, “You know, your mom needed help with the shoes, because she was throwing a tantrum about it.”

The girls snickered and Miranda, who had smiled at them lovingly until then, glared down her wife. “Andrea!”, she hissed, crossing her arms in front of her chest with a pout.

“Oh come here darling. I want all my girls in my arms at once.”, Andy pleaded, eliciting a small smile from her wife.

The older woman snuggled up to the group hug, a content smile on her lips. The journalist felt a flutter in her abdomen, knowing that their little baby was just as happy as her to be held by their whole family.

“We need to look for names now Cass.”, Caroline declared, making all of them laugh.
