The Bat's Side of the Story

Summary:

The Bat's POV of 'The Kid's Alive, But Something's Off'
Read part 1 for it to make the most sense

Work Text:

The Batkids were having their bi-weekly Mario Kart competition. Those who didn't want to participate sat to the side snacking as their siblings raced on the screen and fought each other on the couch.

"Guys…" Came the shaky voice of Peter, their newest sibling. It was very out of character for Peter to be scared, so naturally they snapped their heads to Peter as one. (If anyone not in the Batfam would have been in the room they would have shivered from the unnatural synchronization)

Peter was disintegrating. What the actual fuck?!

“You remember how I told y’all about Thanos, and Titan, and the Dusting?” Peter said, voice still filled with fear. He continued without waiting for a response. “This is what the Dusting looked like…”

That snapped them out of their trance, and the room became a flurry of motion with Batkids leaping over each other like a frantic game of leap frog trying to get someone or something to help.

Dick and Damien both rushed to find Bruce, alternating cries of 'Bruce' and 'Father' echoing through the mansion. Jason, Stephanie, and Duke began a search for Alfred, calling his name like their lives depended on it, and Peter's did. Cass and Tim stayed with Peter, trying to offer some form of comfort, which is hard when you're brother is turning to dust in your arms.

Less than a minute later, the rest of the family appeared with Bruce and Alfred leading the pack, running to Peter.

But they were to late. Bruce was less than a foot away from his son when the teen completely turned to dust. Bruce fell to the floor. His son was dead. Another child was dead, taken from him too young. Sure, his other children had come back, but what's the odds of that happening again?

Maybe… maybe he just went to a different universe… Constantine might be able to figure out where Peter is. Bruce was holding out hope that his multiversal son was alive in a different universe. Hoped that whatever universe that was, he was safe.

Bruce was able to contact Constantine eventually, ready to beg for the man's help. To his surprise and great pleasure, all he had to do was say Peter Dusted, and the man was there in a heartbeat. Apparently his spider son had grown on Constantine during his time in their universe.

After several minutes of the alcoholic doing magic that Bruce didn't understand around where Peter turned to dust, he knew what happened to Peter. He turned to the billionaire, with a smile that Bruce had never seen on the man's face before.

"He's alive," Bruce let out a sigh of relief at Constantine's words. "He's in his original universe, with people who love him and are taking care of him." While Peter was glad his son was safe, he couldn't help the feeling of jealousy that it couldn't be him taking care of Peter.

Naturally, the Batkids were eavesdropping on the conversation. As soon a Constantine said that Peter was in his original universe, Tim slipped off to start designing a multiversal portal.

He didn't attempt to keep his project hidden for long, and Constantine even offered to help find the correct multiversal location.

Finally, after working on it for months and doing test after test to ensure it was safe, the portal was ready.

Some vigilantes had to be in Gotham to keep it safe, so after a very violent (for most people) game of Ultimate Rock-Paper-Scissors, it was decided that Dick and Damien had to stay behind, which they protested loudly. And violently.

The rest of the family stepped through the portal as Dick and Damien pouted about being left behind. As soon as they were all though, they started towards the tall tower with an 'A' on the top that they had heard of from Peter many times.

As soon a Dick and Damien left the Batcave, Constantine slipped through the portal and started towards Avengers Tower as well.
