Work Text:

Megan sighed as she propped her head up on her bed. Her room was messy, the lights were flickering, and she had posters everywhere. School has been such a pain in the ass recently and she couldn’t place a finger on why—okay, that’s a lie. She totally knew why.

Her best friend and captain of the basketball team, Jeung Yoonchae, was currently on the phone with her girlfriend. Giulia was her name. Megan couldn’t lie to herself, the girl was gorgeous. Wavy, brunette hair, beautiful brown eyes, and she was the captain of the cheerleading team. She was everything, and Megan absolutely hated it.

Not because she was pretty, that’s borderline stupid. Her appearance wasn’t the thing that irked Megan, but the way she treated Yoonchae pissed Megan off in ways she couldn’t explain. It was actually ridiculous!

Yoonchae sighed, dropping herself down on Megan’s bed, placing her phone on the desk. She looked deflated as Megan turned to the sound of her… deflating. Like a sad balloon.

“What’d she want?” Megan asked the girl.

Yoonchae glanced over at her. Her brown eyes saddened, and she frowned slightly. “She was getting mad at me because I didn’t buy our prom tickets yet.”

Megan snorted, her face grimaced at the response. “Seriously? God, what’s her issue?”

“Hey, stop that,” Yoonchae retorted. “She just… really wants to win prom queen. Can’t mess that up for her, you know?”

Megan sat up, scooting closer to Yoonchae. She grabbed her hand gently, tilting her head to look at her as Yoonchae’s head hang low. “You won’t mess anything up. You’re literally going to do fine, don’t overthink.”

Yoonchae sat still for a moment before she gave her a nod and a small smile that made Megan’s stomach churn. Her basketball uniform was slightly messy due to the fact she had practice earlier, fabric crinkled at the edges and fell at her shoulders as she was hunched over. But God, did she make messy look good.

“Thanks, Megan,” Yoonchae said softly. She dropped Megan’s hand and she felt an internal jab in her side, frowning at the action. “You’re a great friend.”

Friend. Megan immediately wanted to slap the younger girl's face. She hated that stupid word, especially when it came out of Yoonchae’s mouth. She didn’t feel like just a friend, how could she when she cares about Yoonchae far more deeply than Giulia, of all people. Megan has been there, so kind and loving, for Yoonchae longer than she can remember. And sure, Yoonchae has a girlfriend, but she wasn't anything. She shouldn’t even be allowed to call herself Yoonchae’s girlfriend.

Before floating away to a distant angry world in her mind, Megan exhaled sharply and replied, “Right.” Megan bit her cheek. “Friend.”

Yoonchae nodded unknowingly before glancing over at Megan’s laptop. “Do you wanna watch a movie or something? I’m pretty bored.”

“Shouldn’t you go home and do your homework?” Megan questioned, eyeing her. “It’s a Tuesday night and we have school tomorrow.”

“You’re such a nerd,” Yoonchae teased, reaching for her laptop.

“Hey! I am not!” Megan frowned.

Yoonchae shook her head then gave Megan those stupid pleading eyes. The shorter girl began to feel her heart flutter. She shook the thought away. “Fine. But you better do your homework when you get home.”

Yoonchae’s eyes lit up. “Deal!” She made room for Megan on the latter’s bed, laying down on top of the mattress.

Megan quickly followed, watching as the black haired girl moved the cursor around. She laid her head down on Yoonchae’s shoulder, her hand gripping on her arm. The other girl didn’t seem to mind, clicking on a random movie and pressing play.

Megan stood out on the front porch of her house. Fortunately for her, it was somewhat sunny. The sky shined perfectly, no clouds to be seen, the sun smiling down at her. She was waiting for Lara to pick her up. Her outfit wasn’t anything special. A white crop top with a gray sweater and black sweatpants.

Sighing, she fished her phone out of her pocket to scroll on TikTok. Yoonchae has been busy and couldn’t pick her up that day. Probably early meet or something. Megan didn’t have much time to dwell on it because—

HONK

Megan glanced up. Lara was there with sunglasses on. The roof to the top of her car was off. She gave Megan a smirk, making the other girl roll her eyes. Beside her was another friend, Manon, and in the back was Sophia and Daniela.

“Megan!” Sophia beamed. “Hi!”

Megan returned the smile. She waved, walking towards the car. Lara made a gesture for Manon to get in the back, making the other girl grumble, stepping out of the car.

She reached the car, opening the front door and dropping down.

“Sorry,” Lara said. “I should’ve told you they were here too.”

She could hear Dani scoff.

“It’s okay,” Megan shrugged. “I don’t really mind—or care.”

Lara gave her a grin.

“Soo… What’s going on with you and Yoonchae?” Manon asked, making Megan look back automatically, her face flushing red.

“Nothings going on with me and Yoonchae!” she exclaimed, shooting the girl a glare. “We’re just friends.”

Dani laughed. “Right…. and I’m the pope.”

The rest of the girls started to giggle. Megan sighed, rolling her eyes. “She has a girlfriend.”

The laughing suddenly stopped. Megan raised her eyebrows at the random mood change. Sophia squinted her eyes and pointed. “Yeah, we know.” Megan glanced over at where she was pointing.

Yoonchae and Giulia were there, making out in Yoonchae’s car. Megan felt herself falter. Why? She had no clue. She wasn’t anything other than a friend to Yoonchae. Still, staring at them making out gave Megan a horrible chest pain.

The other girls gave them a disgusted look. Lara started honking the car, making the two girls stop kissing. “Hey! Stop that! It’s eight in the morning.”

Giulia’s eyes widened as she pushed Yoonchae off her. Megan could feel the taller girl’s cheek go red. Then, she felt a pair of eyes on her. Eyes she knew all too well. Megan looked up, meeting Yoonchae’s eyes.

They said something—something she didn’t know what to think of. But Megan didn’t care. She looked away. “Lara, can we go? I really need a coffee.”

Giving her a knowing look, Lara nodded, putting the car in reverse before speeding off.

Megan decided it’d be best if she stood around for Yoonchae’s basketball practice. She sat close enough to see but far enough to not get hit by the ball. Sneakers were squeaking against the polished floorboard.

It wasn't hard to tell Yoonchae apart from everyone else, considering the fact everyone else were men. Sweaty, ugly men passing around the ball. Yoonchae made a shot, making Megan clap from her seat.

Hardly anyone was in the gym. It was mostly just Megan, two other people, and the cheerleading team. Giulia kept glancing over at Megan's ex, Jonah. She wasn’t even paying attention to Yoonchae! How idiotic did she have to be.

Megan sighed, pulling out her phone to text Sophia. Yoonchae had promised her a ride home so she wouldn’t be needing anyone to pick her up. About twenty minutes later, the whistle blew, marking the end of practice.

Yoonchae automatically looked over at Megan, running up to her. Megan jumped from her spot onto the last bleacher, glancing down. The taller girl held her hand out, making Megan take it and come down the bleachers fully.

She turned to Yoonchae and gave her a smile. “Gross, you’re all sweaty.”

Yoonchae arched her eyebrows. “I’m sweaty?” She then pulled Megan closer in her arms.

“Hey stop!” Megan laughed, trying to push away from Yoonchae. Yoonchae didn’t stop. She kept holding Megan closer.

“Yoonchae!” Giulia suddenly said, coming closer to them. Yoonchae immediately let go of Megan, making the shorter girl almost fall. Luckily, she steady herself in time.

“Oh! Hey babe,” Yoonchae said, giving her a small smile. “What’s up?”

Giulia didn’t respond automatically. She gave Megan a glare and made sure the girl saw it. Megan gave her a glare back. Giulia stopped in front of Yoonchae, giving her a kiss.

Yoonchae faltered slightly, but eventually kissed back. Megan mentally rolled her eyes. Gross. This was a school, not a makeout area. Yoonchae pulled back but Giulia still gripped the back of her neck.

“Babe, Jonah’s gonna take me to the mall,” she told her girlfriend.

“What?” Yoonchae said, frowning. “Why—“

“I was going to the mall and needed a ride. It so happens he was also going to the mall.” Megan scoffed. Yeah right. The brunette girl continued, “Can I have money please?”

Megan was about to tell Yoonchae to not give her the money, but knowing Yoonchae, she’d probably get ignored. Yoonchae only sighed, turning her backpack over, pulling out her wallet and handing the girl a hundred dollar bill.

“Thank you so much!” Giulia exclaimed. She ran over toward Jonah, him sending Yoonchae a smirk before turning to leave.

Yoonchae groaned beside her but shook her head. “I’m dropping you off right?” Megan nodded. Yoonchae gestured for her to follow, which Megan did without hesitation. They got into her car, started the engine, and sped off.

It was quiet for a good ten minutes but Megan couldn’t help herself. “You know, you shouldn’t have to give her money.”

“She’s my girlfriend,” Yoonchae said, as if that explained everything.

Megan huffed. Yes, Yoonchae. She’s very much aware of what that girl is. She didn’t need a daily reminder.

“I know that,” Megan said, “But… it’s not your obligation to give her money. That’s not what a girlfriend does.”

Yoonchae didn’t take her eyes off the road. She didn’t respond to Megan either. Megan just let out a breath, slumping down in the passenger seat. Twenty minutes later, they arrived at Megan’s place. The taller girl’s house was just across the road from hers.

She parked the car, turning over the keys. Megan opened the door but before she could leave, a hand gripped her wrist, making her gasp and turn her head. Yoonchae's eyes looked almost sad. It destroyed Megan in ways she couldn’t explain.

“I know,” Yoonchae told her. “I know it’s not my obligation. But what can I do? I can’t tell her no.”

Megan understood that. Yoonchae couldn’t say no to her girlfriend. The younger girl had always had issues with any type of confrontation. Megan just nodded in understanding. “I know. I’m sorry for pushing you.”

Yoonchae only shook her head. “Not your fault. Don’t apologize, beautiful.”

Beautiful. That stupid petname Yoonchae had given her when they were kids. It never failed to make Megan’s heart go thump. “Have a goodnight, Yoonchae.”

Yoonchae gave her a small smile. “You too.” She let go of her wrist.

Megan walked towards the front door of her house. She unlocked the door, immediately closing it as soon as she stepped inside, and sank down to the ground against it. God, she hated herself for feeling this way but she also knew she understood Yoonchae better than she understood herself. Megan sighed, standing up and heading towards her room.

Yoonchae continued to walk forward as Megan tried to reach her pace. They were currently out on a walk—or a run in Yoonchae’s case. She wore an oversized t-shirt with worn out jeans that hung her. Megan couldn’t help but look at how hot Yoonchae was. Even while running. Then she couldn’t stop thinking about how she should be the one kissing up on Yoonchae.

She groaned as the girl sat down near the park’s bench. Walking in the streets of the park wasn’t for the weak. Yoonchae waited patiently as Megan sat down next to her and groaned again.

“Took you long enough,” Yoonchae said, looking out at the grass.

Megan scoffed. “It’s not my fault you became the flash. God, a walk means walk.”

“I did walk!” Yoonchae protested. “You’re just slow.”

“Did you just call me slow?” Megan gasped when Yoonchae gave her a nod. “I’ll have you know that I can beat you in a race anyday.”

“Sure you can, beautiful.”

“I so can! This is bullying!”

Yoonchae let out a laugh, making Megan laugh as well. Then she smiled. Megan’s heart started to flutter. Yoonchae hadn’t smiled like that in a while. Not since her and Giulia became a thing. It was the kind of smile that lit up the whole town. Oh, how Megan missed that charming smile.

“What?” Yoonchae asked her, arching an eyebrow.

“Sorry,” Megan replied, looking away. “I missed that.”

“Missed what?”

“Your smile,” Megan said easily.

Megan could feel the younger girl faltering. “What? I’ve always had the same sm—“

Megan turned quickly. “We both know that’s not true. You haven’t smiled like that since you started dating Giulia. We both know it’s true.”

Yoonchae furrowed her eyebrows, frowning. “Megan. That’s my girlfriend you’re talking about. Watch it.”

Megan rolled her eyes. “Whatever.”

Silence came upon them—a cold one. It made Megan feel slightly guilty. Only just slightly because she didn’t want to feel guilty about Giulia. She hated the girl, and she was sure she made it quite obvious.

A few moments later, Yoonchae rubbed her arm. “I—I know you don’t mean that. And I know you’re just speaking out. I just want you to know that whatever you think is going on isn’t. I’m fine. We’re fine.”

We’re as in her and Giulia. Megan looked at Yoonchae closely. The girl seemed to be hesitant about what she was saying. Megan knew better. Yoonchae wasn’t as fine as she’s saying she was. She wished the younger girl understood her. But she didn’t. An airplane flew by in the sky as Megan looked up.

That’s when she decided not to say anything about it. It wasn't her place either. She was never gonna listen to Megan. “You’re right. It’s not my business. Sorry. We should get going.”

Yoonchae looked at Megan’s brown eyes. Megan then felt herself hyperventilating. Yoonchae stood up, pulling her hand out for Megan to take. The shorter girl did. Their fingers intertwined as they walked forward, forgetting about their earlier conversation and focusing on each other instead.

Once, Yoonchae had driven all the way from the other side of town to Megan’s house. Giulia and her had gotten into an argument then. Yoonchae had caught her and Jonah kissing while going out for a late night snack at Walmart with Sophia.

It was the middle of the night and Megan had been studying for her test she had the next day. She was rummaging through her pile of books when she heard the doorbell ring. Megan’s ears perked up, slowly turning her head from the books.

She stood up, walking toward her front door. Nobody had told her they’d be coming around. When she opened the door, she was met with a pair of red-rimmed, glossy eyes. Megan hated the way they looked. The taller girl looked like she was ready to cry, if she hadn’t already been.

“Yoonchae?” Megan called out softly. “What are you doing—” She got cut off by Yoonchae immediately running into her arms for a hug. Megan gasped slightly, reluctantly pulling her closer.

It was an awkward position. Yoonchae's head was buried in Megan’s shoulder, and since the girl was taller, it must’ve hurt. They stayed like that for a few more minutes before Yoonchae pulled away. Her pajama shirt was slightly soaked with tears, but Megan didn’t mind.

“Sorry,” Yoonchae said sniffling. She closed the front door behind her then turned toward Megan again. “I—I just got into a fight with Giulia.”

Megan raised her eyebrows. “Oh,” she said, looking around, gesturing toward her coach. “Come on, let’s sit and you can tell me all about it.” Yoonchae nodded, wiping her tears.

So that’s what she did. She told Megan about how she found Giulia making out with Jonah. How Giulia kept telling her it wasn’t that big of a deal. How she punched Jonah’s face. How he almost punched her back before Sophia pulled Yoonchae back, shoving Jonah away.

All Megan could do was listen. She knew Giulia and Jonah had something going on—she just never knew they were making out while doing so. Megan made a promise to herself that if she ever saw Giulia again, she’d punch her for treating Yoonchae like garbage.

“I’m sorry,” Megan told the girl as she finished her story. “They don’t deserve you.”

Yoonchae shook her head. “It just sucks. I—I don’t know what I did wrong.”

Megan hated when Yoonchae blamed herself for something that wasn’t her fault. Giulia was an idiot for cheating on her. Jonah was an idiot for playing into it. But Yoonchae wasn’t an idiot. Not to Megan. To Megan, she was the smartest girl ever.

The older girl shook her head, pulling Yoonchae into a hug—a very tight hug. Yoonchae’s arms didn’t immediately close around her but that was okay. The hug was real to her. Megan knew words wouldn’t fix the situation and actions spoke louder than words after all.

After a moment, Yoonchae hugged back. They stayed like that for longer than Megan remembered. Yoonchae broke the hug first, looking into Megan’s eyes. She gave her a soft smile.

Megan looked into those brown eyes, sinking into them. God, she’d look into those eyes forever if she could. She swore she saw Yoonchae lean in slightly. Before Megan had the chance to close the distance, Yoonchae moved her head.

Megan frowned.

“Thanks, Meg,” Yoonchae said, completely oblivious to what had just happened. “Can I stay over?” Megan nodded cause what else was she supposed to do? Yoonchae then took her hoodie off, and handed it to Megan. “And here—since I got your shirt all wet. A trade for a trade.”

Megan only gave her an awkward smile, putting the hoodie on. A moment ruined. Great. Next thing Megan knows, Yoonchae was going on a rant about spider-man, ghosting any trace of Giulia and Jonah

Their biggest fight happened days before prom. Megan and Yoonchae had just gotten to her house to relax after Yoonchae had won the championship game. The trophy sat on Megan’s counter. Megan didn’t know the situation with Giulia or how Yoonchae was coping with it.

But, there they were. Yoonchae’s favorite song—Out of my League by Fitz and The Tantrums playing in the background—while she was going on a rant about how everybody congratulated her and how she was super happy to win for her team.

The older girl knew Yoonchae was passionate about winning. After all, she was good at the game. Yoonchae had been more focused than usual. Like her eyes never left the ball or court.

When Yoonchae made the winning basket, Megan immediately started to yell for her. The younger girl came running towards her, pulling her from the bleachers and giving her a soul crushing hug. Megan let a grin take over her face.

But then—

“And Giulia gave me the greatest kiss ever!” Yoonchae exclaimed, throwing her basketball in the air.

That made Megan raise her eyebrow. “What? Didn’t you and her break up? You know after the whole Jonah situation.”

That made Yoonchae stop pacing around the room. She started to fidget with the ball in her hands. “No. Giulia explained how it was all a misunderstanding and—“

“A misunderstanding?” Megan scoffed, standing up from the floor. She was wearing Yoonchae’s basketball sweater. “You seriously believe that? How dumb do you have to be—“

“Hey!” Yoonchae frowned. “Don’t call me dumb.”

“You’re acting dumb so I’m calling you dumb,” Megan snapped at her. She knew she shouldn’t be so angry but—God, Yoonchae going back to the girl that cheated on her was definitely her final straw.

“You can’t just—“

“Yes I can,” Megan said. “I’m—I’m tired of seeing you get hurt, Yoonchae. You know you deserve better than Giulia. Everyone sees it. But you just want to be so stubborn!” She scoffs, shaking her head. “Going back to her so she can use you again. Yeah, real smart of you.”

“She’s not using me!” Yoonchae angrily barked. “You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Megan rolled her eyes. “Really? Her asking you for money every single day isn’t using you? Her begging for you to come back to her just so she can go and mess around with your friends isn’t using you? God, I wish you weren’t so dense!”

That snapped something in Yoonchae. “You know what? If you thought about this so much, why didn’t you say anything earlier? Huh? What good does—“

“I didn’t say anything because I know how you are!” Megan snarled. “I know you. Of course I do. I’m your best friend!” she exclaims. “I’m sorry that I don’t want to see you get hurt over and over again. What if she cheats on you again? What if she—“

“Shut up!” Yoonchae yelled at her, making Megan gasp. “Just shut up! You don’t know anything about her. You don’t know anything about us. I don’t need you second guessing every little thing she does. You’re nothing! And you know what? I don’t need this.”

Oh. Nothing was a low bar. Even for Yoonchae. She felt tears start to trickle down her face. Megan knew how the taller girl got. But, Yoonchae was never angry at her. Not like this at least.

“And I definitely don’t need you,” Yoonchae spat, dropping her ball, turning away and storming out of Megan’s room.

Megan followed after her. She couldn’t lose her. When she was near the front door Yoonchae turned the knob, Megan croaked, loud enough for the girl to hear, “How could you choose her over me?”

That made Yoonchae hesitate. The door wasn’t open just yet so Megan took that opportunity to continue, “We’ve been friends since kindergarten. You tell me everything. Yet you’d choose a random girl over me?” her voice cracked. “Am I really that unimportant to you?”

Yoonchae didn’t have an answer for her.

“Please don’t leave me,” Megan cried. “Please don’t go. We can talk about this. I’ll—I’ll be nicer about this. For you. Just stay—please.”

That didn’t help at all as Yoonchae still hadn’t responded. Instead, she turned the doorknob and walked out, closing the door behind her. Megan felt something inside her break. Yoonchae hadn’t even looked at her—hadn’t even replied. She just left.

The moment hit the older girl fast. She started to cry. Horribly. Yoonchae had left her without hesitation. She had left Megan all alone. Without any comfort or communication. Megan sank down into her coach. The only noise heard was the sound of Yoonchae’s favorite song playing and Megan bawling her eyes out, desperately clinging to her sweater.

It’s been three days since Megan and Yoonchae had fought. Three days of Yoonchae ignoring her and Megan was miserable, to say the least. The younger girl was everything to her.

Every time Megan attempted to strike conversation, Yoonchae would avoid her and join her other friends. Sophia had given her an apologetic smile because they both knew how stubborn Yoonchae could be.

It was prom night. Megan should be out having fun with Yoonchae. Out dancing with her other friends. Not crying in her room, wearing Yoonchae’s stupid basketball sweater. Yoonchae had left her championship trophy in Megan’s room, not bothering to come back and pick it up.

Megan felt pathetic. Yoonchae could move on, and act like Megan didn’t exist... so why couldn’t Megan do the same?

Unfortunately, her plan of being alone wasn’t happening. The girls had shown up at her place, and they all barged into her room. Megan looked over from where she was laying. They were all dressed up, all fancy—maybe because they were actually going to prom.

“Alright,” Lara said, eyeing Megan. “Get up.”

“No,” Megan replied, shaking her head.

Lara looked over at Manon and Sophia, giving them a hand gesture. They understood immediately, moving toward Megan and pulling her up. The girl’s eyes were all puffy and red.

“Let me go!” Megan whined, trying to get away from their grips.

“No,” Sophia said, holding onto her tightly.

She frowned, looking back at her and Manon. Manon only gave her a shrug. Sophia didn’t say anything else.

“Look,” Dani sighed. “We know it’s hard. But… It's prom, Megan. It’s your night. Not Yoonchae’s. Or Giulia’s. Yours. You can’t let either of them ruin it for you.”

“You don’t understand,” Megan croaked. “I was looking forward to going with Yoonchae. I don’t care if I was third wheeling because I would still be with her. Now I— I can’t go knowing she’s there.”

She felt Manon pat her shoulder. “Megan. Forget about her for one night. You need to go out and enjoy yourself.”

“How could I enjoy myself knowing Yoonchae would never look at me the way I want her too?”

That made everybody go quiet. She pulled out of Sophia’s and Manon’s grip, falling back on her bed. She felt more tears falling down her face. Stupid words.

A few moments later, she felt a body near hers. She looked up and saw Sophia looking down at her. She gestured for Megan to sit up. Hesitantly, she did.

“Megan,” Sophia started, looking at her. “Yoonchae’s a dumbass, alright? I love her to death—but it’s true. She’s oblivious and an idiot. You can’t let her stupidity get in the way of your happiness.”

“Yeah,” Lara butted in. “Forget about relationships—and come with us. Show Yoonchae what she’s missing out on.”

Megan thought about it. They had a point. She knew they did. Why did she have to be miserable when Yoonchae was out enjoying herself? Why did Yoonchae have to be so annoying? Why did Yoonchae make her feel the way she did?

She let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. Megan glanced around at the girls, looking at her to say something. She knew she couldn’t let them down. “Fine.” They all squealed, pulling her into a group hug.

“Yes!” Dani yelled, grinning from ear to ear. “Come on, let’s get you all beautiful.” Megan laughed as she got pulled into the bathroom.

Two hours later, Megan was ready. The girls all looked at her in awe, as she span around.

“Oh my god,” Sophia gasped. “Megan! You look so pretty!”

“Amen to that,” Manon replied, giving her a thumbs up.

Her dress was shimmering with diamonds all around it. It was a strapless gown that matched her figure perfectly. There was a slight slit at the bottom, showing off her right leg. Grey high heels to finish the outfit off. She paired that with a gray necklace—a necklace with a heart pendant around it that Yoonchae had bought her. Her hair fell into flawless loose waves and the brownish highlights in them glowed when the overhead light shined on her. Dani and Lara both looked extremely fond of themselves.

Lara looked down at her watch, eyes widening. “Oh my god! We’re so late. We better get going, now,” she said, marching out of the room.

Manon nodded in agreement, following close behind. Dani took Megan’s arms in hers, gesturing for Sophia to do the same. She did without hesitation. And together they walked off to their prom.

When they arrived at prom, Megan winced. The music was extremely loud. Luckily for her, it was outside in their school’s backyard. Which was pretty big. The girls stuck close to her. The outside was decorated nicely. White ribbons tied around the corridor. Balloons everywhere. Banners all around the place. There wasn’t a specific theme, so Megan wasn’t worried about not fitting in.

It was fun for a bit, sure, but there was still something she was missing. It didn’t feel the same. At all. She loved the girls, but there was one specific girl she was missing. Megan sighed as Lara pulled her near the juice bar.

Sophia and Dani had gone off to dance together. And Manon—well, she needed to use the bathroom. Leaving Megan and Lara alone. She stood awkwardly as a guy tried to ask her to dance, only for her to immediately decline. Unfortunately, that made Lara look over at her.

“Megan,” Lara said, handing Megan a cup full of fruit punch. “You’re supposed to be having fun.”

Megan sighed, taking the punch and sipping on it. “I just—I just can’t Lara. I can’t have fun.”

Lara gave her a once-over. “It’s hard without her huh?”

Megan let out a bitter laugh. “You have no idea.”

Lara hummed to herself, taking a sip of her punch. She set the cup down, saying, “You’re gonna be super grateful.”

“What?” Megan said, glancing over at Lara. “What do you mean I’ll be super grateful.”

“You’ll see,” she sing-songed.

That made Megan nervous. She didn’t know what Lara had up her sleeve—but she wasn’t sure she wanted to know. Lara has always been the type to mess around.

“Lara I swear to go—“

“Welcome students!” A loud voice boomed loudly. “I hope you’re all enjoying your night.”

It was some guy from the student counsel. Megan decided to tune him out, fidgeting with her necklace. It reminded her so much of Yoonchae. She hated Yoonchae. Hated her for making her feel like this. Hated her for being so stupid. Hated her for making Megan’s heart go—

“Our prom Queen…..is Megan Skiendiel?” the student’s voice came out as a question.

Megan looked around. Did she hear that correctly? Was this a nasty trick on her? Lara nudged her.

“What?” Megan said, “Is this what I’m supposed to be grateful for? I don’t want to be prom queen!”

Lara rolled her eyes, taking Megan’s cup from her hand, and dropping it on the table. She pulled Megan towards the front stage. Holy shit, since when was Lara this strong?

Megan started to protest, started to whisper-yell at Lara to let go. But she wouldn’t. Everyone’s eyes were on her. She passed by Sophia and Dani, who were giving her a very odd look. Then she passed by Manon, who gave her a smirk.

As she was pushed to the front—there was a figure. A figure she knew all too well. Megan faltered slightly, letting Lara pull her closer.

When she got close enough, Lara let her go. Megan didn’t move automatically. She couldn’t, her body froze completely. Because a few feet away from her was Yoonchae. Yoonchae in her black blazer, with a white blouse and black pants. Wearing a stash that said prom king.

Yoonchae looked at Megan up and down. Her face shifted into something more—more real. She stared at Megan, like she was a goddess. She was starstruck—completely, entirely starstruck at how beautiful Megan looked.

Megan felt something get placed on top of her head, and something else get placed around her neck. But, she couldn’t care. All she cared about was Yoonchae. Then Yoonchae moved. She moved closer to Megan.

“Wait!” Giulia said, stopping Yoonchae from getting any closer to Megan.

Yoonchae frowned at the girl. “Let me go.”

“No—no, we’re supposed to be prom king and queen together. You cannot—leave me for that stupid—“

“Hey!” Yoonchae snarled at Giulia. “She—she isn’t stupid. Now, move out of the way.” Before Giulia can protest, Yoonchae shoved her lightly, walking towards Megan again.

She stopped a few centimeters from Megan, taking her hand out, hoping Megan would take it. Of course she did. Yoonchae pulled her in close. Slow music started to play in the background—all Megan could do was get lost in Yoonchae’s eyes, as she swayed. Her arms were wrapped around Yoonchae’s neck, the taller girl's arms on either side of her waist.

“Hi,” Yoonchae breathed.

“Hi,” Megan responded, smiling.

Yoonchae didn’t say anything for a few minutes. Taking Megan in. Then—“I’m sorry I was such a jerk to you. You didn’t deserve that.”

Megan shrugged, “I’m sorry for calling you stupid.”

“I was being stupid,” Yoonchae admitted. “You were right. I broke up with Giulia a day later.”

That made Megan frown. “But you wouldn’t talk to me.”

“I was embarrassed,” The taller girl confessed. “I got into a fight with you for no reason, Megs. And—I’ll say I’m sorry for however long I can. You aren’t nothing. You’re everything to me.” She was everything to Yoonchae. Megan felt her cheeks burn.

“And,” Yoonchae said. “I’m glad you came. You deserve to be here tonight. Just like you deserve to be prom queen.”

Megan grinned. “I don’t know how I managed to do that. I didn’t even sign up to be prom queen.”

She heard someone whistle at them. Megan looked back. Their friends were watching them. Manon had her arm wrapped around Lara’s shoulder. Dani had teary eyes, Sophia pulling her in as a comfort.

Megan laughed, looking back at Yoonchae who laughed with her. “God, they’re so weird.”

“So weird.”  Yoonchae nodded in agreement. Their eyes met again. Megan resisted the urge to pull Yoonchae right then and there and kiss her. Yoonchae gave her that stupid charming smile she loved so much.

“You always look beautiful," Yoonchae told her, brushing a strand of Megan’s hair behind her ear.

Megan breathed before saying, “Just shut up and kiss me already.”

Yoonchae immediately did as she was told. She tilted Megan slightly, holding onto her. As they kissed, Megan swore she felt fireworks erupt in her stomach. Their lips collided perfectly together. Yoonchae tasted like vanilla. Her lips somewhat chapped, but in a way that worked for Megan.

They kissed until the shorter girl couldn’t take it anymore and gasped for air. She leaned her head on Yoonchae’s shoulder, breathing in her scent.

“Whoa—that was whoa,” Yoonchae said. Megan pulled back looking at the girl. She was grinning ridiculously, her face slightly red.

“Yeah,” Megan agreed. “Whoa.”

“Can we do that—“

Megan didn’t let her finish. She kissed Yoonchae again, and again. She had waited so long for this. So long to feel Yoonchae’s lips. So long to hold Yoonchae like this. She deserved this.

“Alright break it up!” Sophia yelled at them, forcing them to pull away.

“Go kiss your own girlfriend,” Yoonchae replied, pulling Megan close again, laughing.

Megan laughed as well, holding Yoonchae’s face with both of her hands. Yoonchae looked at her like she was the only girl that mattered. Megan was grateful, she had been pushed into coming. If she hadn’t, she wouldn’t have ended up with Yoonchae. She wouldn’t be dancing with the girl she loved. And she definitely wouldn’t be kissing her either.

It was the perfect night.
