Chapter 1: Wake Up Call

Chapter Text

“I’m just.. Glad I got to see you. One last time. Even if it wasn’t for long.”  The other man held his face, pressing their foreheads together.

In the beginning, there was nothing. But, 13.8 billion years later, there was everything. And everything refers to humans.

Francisco woke up suddenly. He sat up, taking deep breaths, analyzing the world around him. He was in a hospital gown(1). Everything around him looked so bland and sterile. He noticed machines around him taking his vitals. According to the machine, he had an abnormally high heart rate.

He stared at his palms. They looked relatively the same, from what he can remember. Except for the strange thing attached to his finger(2), which he assumed was connected to the heart rate monitor.

Francisco felt his face. Nothing abnormal. Right? Wrong. He felt his upper lip, and his mustache felt extremely unkempt. It was like a large, fuzzy caterpillar on his face.

How long was he out? He had many questions.

“Y..You–” A shocked voice shot out from the other side of the room.

It was a strangely familiar woman, with dark skin, curly blonde hair, and designer clothes. She seemed to be speaking to two doctors.

Why did he wake up? Why now? He held his head, trying to recall any memory. Ah. He remembered hearing some voices speaking about unplugging him and selling his organs…

“Right, so, um..” Francisco’s arms felt weak from holding himself up. He slid himself off of the hospital bed, and attempted to walk towards the familiar woman and the doctors. He found his muscles had weakened, and he fell over.

“Oh, you idiot.” The woman ran over to help him.

He looked up at her. “I think I know you?” She helped him back onto the hospital bed.

“Well you ought to. We’ve literally known each other since primary school.”

“We have?” He was so confused. Where is he?

“Of course! Idiot, come on. You really don’t remember? It’s me, Pestilence. You made up that blasted nickname for me in secondary. Don’t you remember??”

One of the doctors ran over. “Miss! Um Miss.. You know what, that doesn’t matter right now.. He went through a traumatic brain injury during the crash. We explained to you that severe memory loss was a possibility… And, his muscles have atrophied from not using them for a prolonged amount of time.”

“Shut up! Come on, remember, can’t you? Remember Frank? Your idiot boyfriend? Oh, he’s probably been worried bloody sick about you.. Right, I forgot to give him a call and tell him about you.. Come on!”

“I’m.. I’m sorry, I don’t know who you’re talking about..” Boyfriend? “Maybe i-if I saw a photo.. Or, something..?”

“Hold on, hold on.. Let me look at his facebook, or something…” She showed him a familiar face. Frank Furfur, it read on the screen of her cellphone. She scrolled through a couple of photos of him and the man together. Frank Furfur felt so familiar, he felt warm inside. And yet, he still couldn’t remember a single, damn, thing. He frowned. Why couldn’t he recall anything?

“Anything? C’mon. You two were so lovey-dovey.” Francisco shook his head, feeling disappointed in himself.

“Miss. You’re confusing him. Please stop or we’ll have to vacate you from the premises.” The other doctor piped up.

“No I’m not! You idiotic doctors have no idea what you’re doing. Pumping him full of chemicals and who else knows what. I bet you everything I own the vaccines he got when he was younger is why he’s.. Different. Look at him! You can’t tell me sleeping doesn’t make you refreshed?? It’s your foolish.. Things! Whatever you have him hooked up to was poisoning him..” She hissed at both of the doctors.

Francisco started to feel lightheaded. The room was spinning. The lights were too loud. Everything was too loud. He didn’t have a clue as to what was happening and he just wanted it all to go away. It was too much for him right now.

And then everything went black again. All he could remember before closing his eyes was the familiar woman, named Pestilence, being dragged away by hospital staff.
