   “You’re not the real Melody Pond.”

   River’s hearts sank. Both Brooke and H-Two raised their eyebrows. “What are you talking about?” River asked.

   “I made you. You were the first clone.” Kovarian started laughing to mock River. “It would be so much easier to just make a genetically modified clone than change an infant’s biology. I only needed Melody as a base. An infant conceived in the vortex. Then I just grew a copy with modifications.”

   River’s body felt more numb by the minute. She knelt in front of Kovarian. Her voice shook. “W-what happened to the real Melody?” Kovarian just smirked and laughed. “Answer me!” She ignored her questions.
