Work Header

This week in Playoffs

Summary:

A series of (very short) scenes based on the real news from the last week of Hockey Playoffs. May get added to as the Playoffs continue.

Notes:

Takes place during different times in the timeline of the books/shows so may have spoilers and sometimes plays a bit fast and loose with canon. Each Drabble has its own note, providing necessary context.

I decided to not include the “drama” over who would be C for Canada when Crosby joined the team, as funny as that was IRL and could have been as a story - it happened this week, but not in Playoffs.

Sorry, Mama Yuna.

I thought about this on Mother’s Day when Buffalo was playing Montreal

Ilya, voiceover only: “Look at this. Terrible son. Away from his mother on Mother’s Day. Chose hockey over his own mother.”

A small ‘thwack’ noise then Yuna’s voice, also offscreen: “Ilya, stop it.”

[camera flicks around to show Ilya laying on the couch, his head nestled into Yuna’s lap. David has walked up behind them with a tray of mugs and looks bemused]

“Sorry, Mama Yuna.”

You looove me

This is based on the footage of Mike Matheson protecting Zach Benson’s head when they were both down on the ice. I didn’t know which way to write it so I wrote both!

Hayden protects Ilya

The battle is intense, the scrum is out of control and Ilya has been unable to keep his feet, now lying on the ice under a pile of bodies. He can feel and hear the slicing of blades and sticks around his head and he grimaces as one skate skirts very close to his ear. Suddenly the bright lights of the arena disappear as his head is covered by broad shoulders and big gloves surround his helmet.

He looks up into Hayden Pike’s eyes and gives him a cheeky grin. “You love me. I knew it!”

“Shut the fuck up, Rozanov.”

Ilya protects Hayden

Hayden couldn’t help but get dragged down as the hockey game turned into a hockey mob. The desperation to win on both sides was palatable and the play aggressive to match.

Hayden lay on the ice and took the opportunity to catch his breath – as much as he could with a huge Russian lying on top of him crushing his chest.

Hayden winced as another player knocked his helmet, the sharp blade way too close to his head for comfort. Next thing, the arena grew muffled, as Ilya covered Hayden’s head with his gloves, protecting his head from the rabble unfolding over and above them.

“Ha! I knew you liked me!”

“Is for Jane. Not you. She would be sad, no sex. Also for little Pikes and Jackie. Definitely not for you.”

“Sure thing, bud.”

The signs were there

A women showed up to a Golden Knights game with a sign reading “#79 Your best save was made by your lawyer” – referring to SA allegations against Carter Hart, goaltender for Vegas.

It’s Game 4, Round 1 and the Ottawa Centaurs are facing off against the Toronto Guardians. It’s 2 – 1 Ottawa’s way and they’d really like it to be Ottawa in 5. Toronto has put up a good fight (in hockey and in fighting) in the last 3 games though and nothing is guaranteed.

During warm-ups Ilya sees a sign that makes him light up and even laugh out loud.

“Barrett! Look!” Ilya points towards the crowd with his gloved hand. Troy follows his eyeline and also cracks a small smile.

“DALLAS KENT’S BEST CAREER SAVE: HIS LAWYER”

Ilya starts skating toward the glass “Rozy, don’t.” Troy warns. Ilya ignores him, finishes his journey to the boards and gives the woman holding the sign a big smile and thumbs up. She smiles and gives a thumbs up back.

The footage immediately goes viral on Hockey Twitter and Ilya is fined. He pays happily and donates the same amount to a local charity supporting victims and survivors of sexual and domestic violence.

Fine

Thanks to the LVGK for giving me another thing to write right as I was ready to post this! The Coach blew off media after the Round 2 win and got fined and lost them a round 2 draft pick

Ilya got through that game on autopilot. He can’t remember anything after Shane went down and disappeared down the tunnel on a stretcher. It’s all he has seen, running through his head for the last 90 or so minutes. He doesn’t know what he did, he doesn’t know who won, he just skated and reacted, his body leading the way where his head could not.

All he can think about is Shane. How he looked lying there. How Ilya doesn’t know how he is. How Ilya can’t ask anyone. How Ilya had to stay back and pretend he was fine when he absolutely is not fine.

“Roz! Media! … Roz! ROZ! ROZANOV! Media! Now!”

Ilya finally breaks his stupor and looks up.

“No.” He answers quietly.
“What?”
“No. Not tonight.”
“Roz - Ilya, you have to.” The Bears Media Liaison falters, as he watches a still sweaty and definitely unshowered Rozanov shove his shit into his bag haphazardly. “You’ll get a fine.” The Liaison goes on to say.

Ilya stares into his soul, eyes cold. “Fine.” and turned and left the building.
