Chapter Text

Kingdom of Vale, Vale Police Department

Ruby Rose fidgeted in the steel chair. She wasn’t entirely sure what would happen when she helped fend off a robbery, meeting a huntress and geeking out while asking for her autograph but she certainly wasn’t expecting to be arrested by said huntress.

Said huntress who was also conducting her interrogation, “I hope that your actions tonight will not be taken lightly young lady, you put yourself and others in great danger.” The huntress paced around, riding crop in one hand and tablet scroll in the other, the small and barren concrete room save for Ruby's chair and the steel table in front, the blandness encompassed by darkness lit only by a single cheap ceiling lamp making her clicking heels all the more prominent. “They started it!” Ruby defended herself, though this only made the huntress’s frown harden further as she walked in front of Ruby.

“If it were up to me, you’d be sent home with a pat on the back…” the huntress head snapped to Ruby, “And a slap on the wrist.” The huntress smacking the table, just short of hitting Ruby’s resting hands, making the black haired girl jump in fear. “But, there are two people who would like to see you. One is running a bit late but I suspect she’ll be here shortly.” The huntress said exasperatedly.

The huntress walked past the doorway towards the side of the room where a bespectacled man with white hair and neat dark green clothes walked in holding a plate of cookies and a cup of hot chocolate. He leaned towards Ruby, his stern face unreadable at a glance, his thin brown eyes boring into her own.

“Ruby Rose. You… have silver eyes.” Ruby struggled for a response to the odd statement. She knew that silver eyes were rare but she didn’t think that warranted much emphasis. The huntress held up the tablet scroll showing security footage of her fight barely an hour ago. The bespectacled man leaned back and gestured towards the scroll, “So! Where did you learn to do that?” The fight wasn’t really anything special to Ruby, the robbers didn’t even have aura and were only carrying standard issue guns.

“Well I was taught by my-“ Ruby was cut off when a sound like rushing wind basted through the police department. “Hmm, she got here faster than I calculated…” the huntress mused to herself before a white and red vortex of rose petals burst into the interrogation room, forming into a woman with wearing a white cape with a red inner trim, her spikey, mid-back length hair still trailing rose petals.

The caped woman leapt over the table and hugged Ruby with enough force to push her off the chair. Ruby, who had been expecting a reaction like that, sighed in a mucture of relief and exasperation, “Ruby, are you alright? You didn’t get hurt right?” The woman fussed but Ruby tried to diffuse the panic, “I'm fine Mom! They barely touched me, it was a walk in the park!” Ruby’s Mom stared at ger daughter before she sighed in relief only to be started when the bespectacled man coughed, bringing the attention back to him. “Hello Summer, it’s been a while since we last spoke.” Summer Rose looked at the bespectacled man sheepishly, “Aw c'mon Oz, can’t I worry about my little girl first?”

Ozpin held a blank look for a moment before shaking his head with a chuckle, “Hm, no. I suppose you can’t. Now back on topic, would either of you mind explaining to me how exactly young Miss Rose learned to do this?” He gestured towards the held tablet, showing Ruby fighting the armed robbers and Ruby rubbed the back of her head nervously while Summer watched closely, pride filling her chest.

“Yep, that's my baby alright. She learned the basics at Signal Academy while Qrow and I taught her the more advanced tricks.” Ruby shrunk in embarrassment, her mom’s praise always at the ready, “Yes, you and that dusty old crow are the only ones I've seen with that level of skill. No wonder she could wield one of the most deadly weapons designed.” Ozpin placed the plate of cookies on the table, both mother and daughter tearing through the baked treats.

“Now, what is an adorable girl such as yourself doing at a school designed to train warriors?” Ruby was about to answer but a look from Summer made her pause to swallow her mouth full of cookies. “Well, I want to be a huntress.” Ozpin tilted his head at this, “You want to slay monsters?”

Ruby straightened up at this, confidence rising, “Yeah! I only have two more years of training left at Signal until I graduate and then I'm going to apply to Beacon! Y'see, my sister is applying there this year and she’s trying to become a huntress and I want to be a huntress 'cause I wanna help people! And my parents always taught us to help others, so I thought, ‘Hey, I might as well make a career out of it!’ I mean the police are alright, but Huntsman and Huntresses are just so much more romantic and exciting and really, gosh, you know!”

Ruby gasped a little for air before blushing in embarrassment at ranting in administration, turning as red as her cape. Ozpin and the huntress looked at her, expressions unchanged while her mom had a teasing look in her eyes. Ruby already knew she’d dread whenever Mom was going to bring that up again. Ozpin nodded in affirmation after a moment, a choice having been made. “Ruby Rose, do you know who I am?”

“You’re Professor Ozpin, the headmaster of Beacon.” Ruby managed to say, her embarrassment dying down. Professor Ozpin held a polite smile, “Hello.” Ruby took this in earnest, “Nice to meet you.” Ozpin looked at the huntress who responded with a simple hmph. Ozpin then turned towards Summer, the two having a wordless conversation before Summer sighed in resignation, “It’s her choice.”

Before Ruby could wonder what was going on, Ozpin leaned towards Ruby, “You want to come to my school?” Ruby sucked a deep breath, knowing full well that what she said here would decide her future.

“More than anything.”

*SCENE BREAK*

Ruby and Summer Rose left the VPD, breathing in the refreshingly crisp night air after what felt like hours. “Well I think it’s about time we got home. Your father and sister's must be worried sick.” Ruby laughed at Summer’s teasing and yawned, “Yeah, we should probably get back soon. Can we get some hot chocolate before we leave?” Summer thought this over before nodding, the next airship to Patch wouldn’t be for another hour considering how late it had gotten.

Both mother and daughter adjusted their harness's with their weapons, Ruby’s being a pair of handgun kama's that could combine into a double headed scythe she lovingly named Crescent Mirror, named after her mother’s own high power sniper rifle scythe, Crescent Rose. With all set and done, Summer and Ruby Rose left for hot chocolate.
