Eros in Progress - Glossary, etc

Summary:

A glossary for Eros in Progress (may add to it as needed)

Work Text:

Hello! Katsuki Yuri here! Are you new to the world of magical figure skating? Not sure about the words being used? Never fear! Allow me to help with some basic terms!

magic -- the special power or ability to create 'something' from 'nothing' thanks to a 'spell.' magic is an everyday occurrence, but few are actually capable of doing anything beyond what passes for normal. the most spectacular and powerful forms of magic are the ones that create colors, and they are categorized by the intensity and variety of colors produced, with the greatest forms of magic being referred to as Ten Thousand Color magic.
colors -- while colors refers simply to... colors, it also refers to the power and magnitude of the spell produced. a spectacular spell with LOTS of colors, very bright or vivid colors, etc, is a powerful spell whose results can be felt by a larger area of people, sometimes even by people in a certain radius who don't even see the colors. the more colors involved in a spell, the more constructive elements, like love, happiness, etc, are believed to be involved as well. very bright colors, too, are considered to be more powerful. the most powerful colors manifest in forms such as fireworks or an aurora.
spells -- a magical spell is made using the force and intensity of the heart, mind, body, and soul working in congress. most magic spells are referred to as a 'performance,' because they are whole-body efforts. while many different professions and skills can produce spells, only a select few can create manifestations that will have broad effects upon the world.

manifestation / effects -- the result of a high-level spell. it is believed that the human spirit is prone to demonic impulses, or is delicious to demons, and therefore all the destructive emotions and impulses are born in the human heart. sorcerers create spells that produce 'manifestations' or 'effects,' and these effects are visibly manifested in the form of colors and light, and rarely, actual physical objects. these spells and their effects are believed to the source of all the constructive impulses in mankind, such as love, hope, happiness, excitement... because the light and color themselves are responsible for the effects, even seeing a video recording or photograph of the effect can produce the constructive emotions in people all over the world for all time.
sorcerers -- those talented in magic, but also in the arts, or sciences, as well as physical pursuits, who perform to create elaborate spells, which, when done extremely well, produce the effects that have such prodigiously good results around the world.
Merlin Scale -- a measurement of the colors produced by a sorcerer. the Merlin Scale is a strict measurement of the intensity and power of the color produced, and is primarily used to categorize and identify young or weaker sorcerers.
Flamel Scale -- a transformation of the Merlin Scale primarily used in the measurement of performances of powerful sorcerers, specifically Ten Thousand Color sorcerers. because the Merlin Scale is an exact measurement of the color produced, the values for a spectacular performance can result in unwieldy large numbers. using the Flamel Scale, the lower part of the Merlin Scale is shrunk down to nothing, and the values are more manageable for spectacular performances. a performance, therefore, with an 'amateur'-like manifestation will score at 0, and the greatest performances will be between 1000 and 1200. a performance which results in both a spectacular display of over 1000 plus a physical manifestation earns a special score on the Flamel Scale: 10,000, as in a Ten Thousand Color performance.

figure skating -- one form of sorcery that is associated with the element of water – and is typically performed in the 'cold' half of the year, from the beginning of fall to the end of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. because it involves music, choreography, athleticism, and even fashion, it's capable of producing some of the most spectacular forms of manifestations in all of magic, and is thus considered to be a Ten Thousand Color Magic.
fireworks -- bright, brilliant, multi-faceted explosions of color that even produce sound, they are so explosive. they can be seen and felt by people far away from the sorcerer, and have large, exciting results. they are short-lived, though. the most common form of spectacular manifestation.
aurora -- a type of spectacular manifestation that mimics the aurora borealis, that is... extremely large, wide strips of dancing light, usually with a more muted color scheme than a fireworks effect, that can last for hours after a performance is complete and be seen for miles and felt even far beyond where it can be seen.
gem -- rarely, after a particularly emotional or powerful performance, the color created will coalesce into a physical object that is left behind by the sorcerer. these gems are extraordinarily beautiful, and continue to produce mild forms of the effect of the spell for as long as they exist. they are HIGHLY sought after and valuable, with large gems of many colors being the most expensive and desirable. some can even be used as a power source, if they are large enough.

physical manifestation -- even rarer than a gem being produced, it is possible for a sorcerer to create more than just colors, but also physical objects. these most often take the form of small specks of what seems to be 'solid light,' and resemble confetti in various shapes and colors. the larger the physical presence, the more powerful they are. however, almost all physical manifestations will dissolve once they come into contact with 'normal' objects/people/animals/plants. how long they last before they disperse is also a sign of how powerful they are. however, in hopes of preserving these manifestations, at almost all major festivals for sorcerers, there will be artists and mages prepared to 'capture' the manifestations in a matrix of specially prepared substrate, which, when it comes into contact with the manifestation, will harden, thus capturing the manifestations for posterity. these are then cut into stones, which are almost as highly sought after as the gems, but have less power. they are, however, considered an even greater badge of honor for a sorcerer, because gems are created based on emotions and other hard to pin down factors, but physical manifestations are evidence of a highly skillful performance.
festivals -- sorcery is extremely important for humanity, and sorcerers making good use of their skills is essential for both the prosperity and peace of mankind. to both encourage and reward sorcerers for their vital work, regular festivals are held to celebrate the brightest and the best. for example, in figure skating, there are multiple international and national festivals, culminating in things like the Grand Prix Final, the World Championships, and the Olympics. it may seem odd that sorcerers are awarded medals and graded on their performances, when ALL performances are important and need to be encouraged, but it is a millennial-old tradition that is based on the idea that the competition will bring out the very best, most exciting, most impactful performances and therefore have the greatest effects. some of the best performances from these festivals are shown and reshown, so that the power they produced can continue to have good results around the world. this is the source of the famous russian phrase, 'Victor Nikiforov is the cure to cancer,' since his performances are shown in many hospitals in russia and around the world to help the patients remain strong and recover from their illnesses.
soulmates -- soulmates are people who are so well suited to each other, so perfectly aligned in so many ways, that their bodies react to each other, and 'stain' each other. typically, this takes the form of matching tattoo-like symbols that will appear in the palm of their hands at the same time. the creation of a soulmark is typically sparked by some physical contact between the soulmates, though it's notable that this is not necessarily their first physical contact. soulmarks and soulmates are considered one of the obvious results of the performances of sorcerers, as it is believed that without magic to fill the world with love and happiness, people would not be able to bond so deeply.
soulmarks -- the tattoo-like symbol usually on the palm of the hands of soulmates. these marks are exactly alike, though some color variations between partners is often noticed. the symbols are arcane and have no meaning or sense, and can take many different forms and styles, as they reflect the bond between the people involved.
