In that other life, it would be his hands that could heal the other man, could ease all his pains and see him wake…
Lan Xichen stayed vigil at the Jin's bedside, never once leaving unless absolutely necessary, taking meditations over sleep to ensure he was alert for the other's waking.
It was thus unsurprising that the great Zewu-jun, who was running on fumes and an overexerted core, fell into slumber in the early hours of what seemed to be a particularly dreary day.
No one would fault him who had stayed alert for so many months to have this moment of rest before continuing on.
It was thus a surprise as lashes fluttered against pale cheeks, and slowly raised to allow honeyed eyes to see the world around them for the first time in months.
The small room, so familiar to him, seemed all the more smaller as he became aware of his company, who had laid his head down next to his hand.
It was a struggle to gain control of his limbs once more, and his hand shook as he reached out to just barely graze the other man's cheek. His tongue flicked out to wet his lips, and his mouth opened to speak, but only a shrill wheeze escaped from him.
Yet it was enough to alert the Lan, whose head shot up, it was then that warm browns met honeyed eyes, they were wide from shock.
"A-Yao..." He whispered, and a small, dimpled smile that brought the warmth of the sun was his reply.
