As you guys might know, I’m turning 19 soon. I’ve had this problem in my head since I have turned 18, but now it’s only intensified.

The issue is, I’m still living with one of my older brothers, but he’s the only one who supports the two of us (monetarily, I mean… emotionally he needs help sometimes). I’m in university right now, but theoretically I do have enough time to hold a job.

To put it into words, my question is: should I get a job and move out? Isn’t this what people of my age are supposed to be doing? I don’t hate living with my brother, but I just feel like I have expectations on me that I have to hold up.

Thank you for coming out, Protoclone. I’m very glad you felt comfortable enough to share that part of yourself.

I’m not sure what exactly you mean by “gay”, whether it be mlm or queer in a general sense, so I’m going to go with the latter.

To answer your question, I have to agree with Giggly Puff. There isn’t any mystery in writing queer characters. Just write them the same way you would write any other character. The only difference would be if you were writing time period-accurate drama, then you have to pay attention to societal perceptions of queerness at that time. I personally prefer my fiction without time period-typical homophobia, but it’s a personal choice.

Overall, I wouldn’t say I have any special advice, but I would be interested to hear if anyone else has some.

now listen here. as the designated “purple gay” of this forum, i have the MOST expertise out of anyone here. and with my giant expertise on the matter, i have this to say: the biggest difference between a straight relationship and a gay relationship is PINING

it doesn’t matter what time period your story takes place in. gay people are naturally inclined towards pathetically moping around, thinking their feelings are unrequited. that’s just how queer people are

so if your gay characters aren’t pining, id consider that inaccurate representation, and a complaint will be promptly set to lgbtq headquarters

I’m not sure if I should post this, considering I am an admin and I have a persona to uphold on this forum. I don’t usually get mad like this, honestly, I’m surprised myself. But I just need to share this with somebody.

My brother is in love with his coworker. Now, there wouldn’t be an issue with this, if only my brother wasn’t as emotionally literate as an orange (which is honestly somewhat insulting to oranges, my apologies). That is to say, instead of seeing his feelings for what they are, he denies that they exist. I’m not sure if he does this intentionally, or if this is a natural defense mechanism created from his fear of having any emotions that aren’t “grins devilishly” and “sick of it”.

Now, you might ask, how exactly am I involved in this? Well, I am not. Technically. “Technically” being a load-carrying word here.

Picture this: my brother comes home from his job at an establishment which I shan’t name. Now, instead of taking a shower (he smells *awful* whenever he returns from his job, consequences of working in customer service) or relaxing in front of the TV like a normal person, he barges into my room (alright, well, he knocks and waits for my answer, but he might as well barge in) and starts ranting about his coworker.

At this point, I probably know more about my brother’s coworker than his own mother. I know he wears the exact same clothes every day. I know his favorite food (which he brings to his job in frightening quantities). I know he has a really long neck and really long fingers (thanks, bro). And I know he’s apparently absolutely batshit insane.

The reason for the latter is a compilation of multitudinous occurrences that my brother has told me about, and I won’t go into the exact detail, but trust me: that man’s criminal record is probably longer than his hands. Which, as has been aforementioned, are pretty damn long.

I have no idea why my brother is in love with this man, but I honestly do not care. I just wish he would stop taking his inability to process his feelings on *me*.

Sorry. This was a long post. I just needed to get this out.

That is a good suggestion. Unfortunately, (I love my brother with all my heart, but) his only friend is the coworker that he is in love with. And also hates.

I’m afraid that if I tell him to stop bothering me with his issues, he’s going to completely clam up and never share his feelings with anyone. And then, when those clammed up feelings are too much to bear on his own, he’s going to explode and do something bad, most likely to himself. I know I said in the post that I wish he’d stop talking to me about this, but this is the cross I must bear.

“A little story” you’ve been working on? This is a masterpiece. I cried. And you know it’s not easy to make me cry.

I’ve said this to you before, but you so masterfully manage to bring dark comedy and emotional turmoil together in your writing. I am not exaggerating when I say that I laughed out loud at some of those lines, and multiple times I had to stop reading to bury my head in my pillow and just *think* about those characters.

Also, the way you describe “his” movements as being “zombie-like” is both disturbing and somehow romantic in the context? You paint a picture of “him” being a very strange man who may or may not be deceased, and yet the POV character comes off as even more eccentric. I suppose that’s what makes them a good match for each other. Apologies if I’m rambling. It’s just your writing is so good, I’ve always said you sell yourself short when it comes to it.

my oc’s name is bill! he’s a mobster, and he doesn’t have a left eye because he’s so cool (he lost it after a fight with his nemesis/lover). he smokes weed everyday. he also has clothes that aren’t just his tie, i swear, just imagine them

his backstory is that he is an orphan who built a crime empire with his own two hands. of course, there have been some contenders for his throne, so he lost some limbs in fights before sewing them back on himself

he has a nemesis from a rival organization who he’s deeply in love with, but his feelings are unrequited. but he doesn’t care though because he has weed lmao

Alright. First of all. You need to see a doctor about your fixation on the color purple. You know there are other colors out there, right? I don’t know how to handle the fact that when I ctrl+fed “purple” on this post, I found 32 results. I’m convinced you once misread the phrase “magnum opus” as “magenta opus” and have been confused ever since.

But that aside, your writing is amazing, as always. You know I love psychoanalyzing characters - less so real people, but since those aren’t real people you write about, I can go all out.

It’s clear to me that the MC fears abandonment most of all, and thus clings to the mysterious “him” ferociously. What’s interesting to me is that the narrator here is clearly unreliable - while the narration insists that MC’s love is clearly unrequited, “he” shows his affections through his actions, such as secretive smiles, barely suppressed laughter at the MC’s (frankly, unfunny) jokes, and offers of cigarettes, even though the MC insists every time that he doesn’t smoke nicotine.

Once again, I am amazed by your ability to move me with words on the screen, but I suppose that’s what writing is about. Can’t wait for more misadventures of the MC who isn’t at all similar to anyone I know.
