Soulmate Fortnight Day 3

Summary:

At first touch, we see a glimpse of our future together

Work Text:

It was no secret that soulmates were identified upon the first touch. The moment skin touched skin, the pair (or more, in some rarer cases) were gifted with a vision of what their lives could be like together. Said vision was always shared simultaneously; both parties saw the same thing, were given the same promise to hopefully achieve the same ending. Everything about it was beautiful, romantic, dreamy, ethereal, all the nice things everyone dreamed of.

But you weren’t interested.

You wore gloves every day, because you had enough going on in your life without trying to chase down some pipe dream brought about by a shared hallucination. The economy alone had you stressing more than you would ever admit. You’d probably explode if you added romance on top of that.

Which was why you were so fucking startled when one moment you were stepping out into the street to get your car across the way, and the next, you saw bodies. Everywhere. The entire world flattened, leaving only piles of the dead as far as the eye could see. Was this what the end of the world looked like?

Then you blinked and it all went away.

A large, warm hand was wrapped tightly around your arm where your short sleeves exposed your skin. You could feel another on your other shoulder, like whomever it was curled protectively around you. From the car honking and your position back where you started trying to cross the street, you surmised that you only avoided getting hit by oncoming traffic by the grace of a stranger’s–your soulmate’s, your heart whispered–kindness.

“What the hell?” When you looked up, you saw what was quite possibly the most handsome man you’d ever seen.

Moss green eyes stared at you, every bit as shocked as you were, from a roguishly beautiful face. “… There was a car …” he offered distractedly. He seemed to shake himself after a moment. “I’m Dean.”

Hesitantly, you supplied your own name. What was with that vision? You wanted to ask, but you were afraid of the answer. You’d never cared about meeting your soulmate before. Then again, that was before you saw what was quite possibly the literal apocalypse upon touching him. Now, you were curious.

So when he offered his number on the heels of an excuse about having to run, you accepted it. You could decide later what you’d do with it.
