He stared at her, wondering why on earth she’d say such a thing.
“Of course I want to.” He said, trying not to sound offended. It didn’t work.
“But you know that it’s going to be dangerous, right? Like, majorly dangerous. I-I don’t know how safe I can keep you when I don’t entirely understand what I’m up against. It’s- I wouldn’t want you to-“
“Hey,” he said, stepping forward into her space, more than he already was, “We’re a team, right? We’ve always been a team.”
Annabeth looked at him, and a sense of anguish filled her chest so rapidly that it forced a panicked breath from her lungs.
“Percy,” she muttered, “you don’t…you don’t owe me anything, you know that, right? I don’t want you to feel obligated to come on this quest just because we’re friends, and because of e-everything we’ve been through.”
Percy’s eyes narrowed, “Annabeth, what’s going on, why are you-“
“You have a family, Percy,” she breathed, a little desperately, eyes slipping closed, brows furrowing, “There’s a bigger picture here. There are people that need you.”
