Over a decade has passed since the Lylat Wars. Dr. Andross, a mad scientist banished to the deadly planet Venom, sought revenge against Corneria. But the evil ape was defeated by the efforts of Fox McCloud, leader of Star Fox. Since then, Star Fox has protected the Lylat System from great threats. But after the war with the Aparoids, an alien race of insectoids from another galaxy, the Star Fox team has fallen apart...
Peppy Hare, veteran pilot and strategist, sought retirement after the war with the Aparoids, but his good friend General Pepper fell terminally ill from after being nearly transformed into an Aparoid. In respect for their old friendship, the aging rabbit stepped up as the Corneria Defense Force's new general.
Slippy Toad, mechanic and engineer, met a beautiful frog by the name of Amanda during a vacation to Aquas. The two fell in love and became engaged not long after, Slippy quietly resigning from Star Fox to become a free lance inventor.
Falco Lombardi, ace pilot and former leader of the space gang Free as a Bird, grew restless with the lack of excitement in peacetime. He left Star Fox to regroup with his old gang, leading them on a mission to hunt down the renegade Star Wolf team for their bounties.
Despite aiding Star Fox in defeating the Aparoids, the Star Wolf team were still considered highly dangerous criminals due to their association with the late Andross and their rivalry with Star Fox.
Fox McCloud, his team separated by conflicting interests, could not yet retire--despite being paid handsomely for his service in defense of Lylat, he still had a massive debt to pay. His late father took an 80 year loan to construct the Great Fox, the mothership of Star Fox, which was lost during the final battle of the Aparoid War.
Krystal, a blue vixen and telepath from the destroyed planet Cerinia, stayed at Fox's side ever since they first met on Sauria, having fallen in love with him. Sadly, the stress of paying off his father's loan, finding missions to keep money rolling in, and the leave of his closest friends has caused him to become distant from her. Confused and troubled by Fox's coldness, Krystal left him to clear her mind, becoming a pilot in the Cornerian Defense Force. But this action caused Fox even more frustration. Now alone, Fox returns home to Papetoon...
[Fox piloted his Arwing to his old home on planet Papetoon. He hasn't been home in over a decade, not since he dropped out of the Cornerian Academy and became the new leader of Star Fox after his father was presumed KIA on Venom. He knocked on the door.]
Fox: Mom? I'm home.
[For a while, no one answered. Fox assumed the worst, that his mother had left him in the years he had spent in Lylat, or that she had joined his father in death... Then the door opened, revealing a middle aged vixen.]
Vixy: Fox? Is that really you?
Fox: Yeah.
[His mother burst into tears, hugging her son for the first time in over a decade.]
Vixy: I missed you... Thank goodness you're alive!
Fox: Missed you too, Mom.
Vixy: You've grown so big since I last saw you. You look just like your father. But, where's Peppy and your friends?
Fox: Mom, we've got a lot to talk about...
[Vixy cooked a homemade meal for her and her son as Fox explained to her everything that happened since he left: the Lylat Wars, Titania, Sauria, and the Aparoids.]
Vixy: Quite a story. I'm sure your kits would love to hear it. Oh! That girl Krystal! When are you going to introduce her to me?
Fox: ...She left.
Vixy: Oh. Fox, I'm so sorry.
Fox: Honestly, my whole life is now a wreck. I'm almost 30 years old, and I'm still paying off Dad's loan for the Great Fox. My team has broken up, and now I'm at a loss of what to do...
[The foxes then heard a noise. Fox ran outside to his Arwing, finding he had a message.]
Peppy: Fox! Come in, Fox! We need your help!
Fox: Peppy? What's going on?
Peppy: Corneria's under attack! We need Star Fox on the double!
Fox: I'm on my way! Just hold on.
[Fox got out of his Arwing and ran back to his home.]
Vixy: Fox?
Fox: Mom, I have to go. I know it's dangerous to go alone, but Peppy needs my help.
Vixy: ...I know you can do it. You've survived so many horrors I can't begin to imagine. And Fox, if you see Krystal, try to patch things up. I really want to see my grandkits someday.
Fox: Okay, Mom. Thank you.
[The foxes shared one last hug, then Fox got into his Arwing, contacting General Peppy.]
Fox: Come in Corneria! This is Star Fox! I'm on my way!
Peppy: Thank you, Fox! I knew you wouldn't let me down. Even with the best pilots in the force this is one heck of an attack!
Fox: Don't think I'll let you off the hook just because you were once my old man's wingman, General. I've still got a massive loan to pay off for the Great Fox.
Peppy: Yeah, I know. Once Corneria is safe we can discuss your payment. Peppy out.
[Once Fox was in space, he activated his warp drive, plotting a course to Corneria.]
Fox: Star Fox is back in action! Let's go!
