Harris sighed, reached for his hand, and laced their fingers together. As if, despite everything, he still needed to reassure himself that Troy was there.
“So how are we going to fix this?”
Troy stayed silent. He had absolutely no idea.
Harris waited for a moment. Then he picked up the phone lying beside him. Unlocking it with his fingerprint, he held it out without a second’s hesitation.
Troy stared at him in confusion.
“You know the passcode. You can look through it whenever you want,” he sniffed softly.
“What? No, I don’t want that.” Troy locked the phone again and set it down beside them.
Harris looked at him for a moment before speaking.
“I swear, I was just being friendly.”
“I know.”
“I would never—God, Troy, I would never hurt you like that.”
Troy nodded. “I know.”
“Do you?”
Troy nodded again.
The problem was that he didn’t believe his own luck. He didn’t believe he could have something this good and not lose it.
Harris studied him for a few more moments, as if trying to decide whether he believed him. Then he rubbed his eyes. “Then explain it to me.”Troy felt his eyes burn. “I was watching you with that barista. And I started thinking too much. Thinking about him. And then it crossed my mind…” He swallowed. “It was only for a second. But after that I couldn’t stop thinking about it.” He paused. “I let my own head scare me.”
“I just don’t understand how you could look at me and, even for one second, think I’d do the same thing to you.”
That was what finally broke Troy.
Because there was no anger in Harris’s voice. Only pure, honest hurt.
“I didn’t.” His voice cracked. “I wasn’t thinking straight. I’m so sorry, Harris. Can you forgive me?”
Harris sniffed, smiled sadly, and nodded. “Once we get this sorted out, I’m going to be mad at you for a while.”
A surprised laugh escaped Troy. “That’s fair.”“So we’re not breaking up anymore?” Harris asked after a moment.
Troy looked at him with raised eyebrows. “We were never breaking up.” -
