An Hour Too Late

Summary:

Kohga swore to help Princess Zelda and the Champions, in exchange for one thing. Help him find his Right Hand, Sooga, who stayed behind at the Akkala Citadel to fight off the Blights so Kohga could escape. It took forever to convince everyone to help, mostly Revali, who kept saying there was no way a Yiga, even one as competent as Sooga, could survive all four Blights, especially while already injured.

But they came anyways. Kohga knows Sooga has to be alive. Sooga wouldn't leave Kohga alone.

Right?

From Kohga's POV

Work Text:

I headed up the path to the Citadel, the Princess, the Champions, and a few Yiga Blademasters walking behind me, walking slowly. Too slow. What is he was injured?

"Sooga! Sooga!" I yelled, hoping he respond, that he hear me.

"This search is just... asinine." The talking Cuccoo, Revali, said off-handedly.

"he may still be alive." Mipha replied.

"Exactly! Sooga knows he's not allowed to die unless I give him permission too!" I exclaimed.

"He fought against all four Blights, Master Kohga. It is... unlikely he survived." Urbosa said, trying to comfort me. I turned to face them.

"He's not dead! Revali, go into the sky and see if you can spot him from above!" I commanded, crossing my arms. Revali rolled his eyes, and took off using his Gale.

"I don't know, Goro. Sooga is tough, but the Blights managed to get the best of us." Daruk said, trying to play peacemaker. I teleported closer to the Citadel, which was in ruins.

Sooga couldn't be dead.

Right?

I teleported even closer to the Citadel, and was immediately hit with a metallic smell. Blood. My stomach churned. Maybe it was just Bokolins that got injured, or some Hylians!

"Sooga! Sooga! It's me, the stupendous Chief of the Yiga Clan! Master Kohga!" I said, posing, then stopped when I remembered everyone else wasn't here yet.

I wandered around for several minutes, calling out Sooga's name, when I saw him.

He lying on the ground, surrounded by a pool of blood that had begun to dry.

My stomach dropped.

"Sooga!" I yelled, running over and collapsing next to him. He was covered in wounds that were still slightly bleeding, and his mask was cracked.

He wasn't moving.

Wasn't breathing.

No. No no no no no no no no no no no NO!

I checked his pulse, my shoulders shaking.

Nothing. He was still warm, but there was no pulse.

Tears welled up in eyes, and I buried my masked face into his stomach, not caring about the blood.

"S-Sooga. Wake up, please. T-that's an order from your Master." I said, trying not to cry.

Still nothing.

I let out a scream, one full of grief, pain, heartbreak.

Footsteps approached, and I felt a hand grab my shoulder.

"DON'T TOUCH ME!" I yelled, pushing the hand, Zelda's hand, away. The other Champions were looking at me with pity.

"H-he's not dead. H-he's just needs healing." I said, glancing at Mipha, whose whole ability was that she could heal others. She quietly approached, her hands glowing with a soft life, and knelt next to me, gently touching Sooga, then pulled away.

"I-i am sorry for your loss, Master Kohga. I wish I could help, but... it appears he died. Recently, too." She whispered. I choked back a sob.

If I had been here quicker, maybe Sooga would still be alive.

If the Champions hadn't kept protesting the search party, Sooga would be alive.

I got to my feet, my hands shaking.

"If we had gotten here just an hour earlier, my Right Hand, my Sooga, would be ALIVE!" I yelled. Everyone took a step back. I continued.

"But nooo. You all had to keep protesting and claiming Sooga was already dead! And now, because of you, he is!" I yelled, then collapsed onto my knees. My Yiga uniform and mask were soaked and covered in blood, but I didn't care. I pulled Sooga closer to me, sobbing.

"I'm going to kill the prophecy man, Sooga. I-i swear it on my mask." I vowed, taking his cooling hand into mine.
