The Occult Club Is Trying Their Best (And Superfish Is There Too)

Summary:

Eugene scoffed. "We don't need a break, Deej." He scowled at Mandy, who pursed her lips. "What we need is for someone—" Another pointed look at Mandy. DJ winced. Even Georgie was saying something about them not fighting. "—to stop disregarding everything someone else says."

"Allow me to interject." And of course, now Superfish wanted to try his hand at this too.

And so, the competition for the Occult Club’s Captaincy begins. Who will win?

Notes:

This work seeks to inhabit the environment of the Occult Club, and to bring Mandy to the forefront. We don’t know much about her so she is currently a mostly blank slate, but even based on what we do know, she shows incredible promise as a character. I look forward to seeing more of her.

To those curious regarding how this may fit in the context of my other works:
It begins at a time when Superfish and DJ have finished collecting all of the necessary ingredients for the strength potion, but are yet to brew it. It will span the duration of them brewing the potion, and perhaps a few more days past that. That is the tentative plan, at least.

"I believe simply 'stumbling' upon a supernatural phenomenon is highly unlikely. Instead, we should be researching existing stories and questioning their validity."

DJ sighed, stretching his arms behind him. This argument had been going on for the past half-hour.

Eugene glared at Mandy, and she glared right back. If this were a manga, they would have had sparks crackling between their eyes.

"Come on now," he said, trying to make himself sound as placating as possible. "Maybe we should take a break?" Hopefully, some time away would soothe this tension.

He rushed forward, ready to prevent another disaster of the suggesting-a-duel-to-the-death-for-resolving-disagreements variety.

Superfish took a slow circle around the room, looking at the posters they had pasted onto the walls. "You." He pointed at Daisuke, much to everyone's surprise. Daisuke barely looked up, but he was probably listening.

"You are the photographer, right?"

Daisuke nodded. Even Eugene was listening intently, his earlier whining forgotten.

This was either going to be quite good or a complete disaster.

"Then you must have a good grasp of the art of selectivity." He tapped their poster of “The Shining.” "Look at this poster of yours. Why do you think they made it the way they did?"

"What do you mean, Sebastian?" Georgie asked curiously. DJ had to say, even he was interested in seeing where this was going.

Superfish strolled over to Mandy and Eugene. "It's simple, really. The captain should be someone who best understands the feelings associated with the occult."

DJ did not like where this was going.

"Which means… both of you should take a photograph that defines the occult to you. Daisuke here—" he pointed toward Daisuke, who seemed as unperturbed as always. "—can be your judge."

"And of course—" There was that smirk that always signaled Superfish being up to no good. "You can make use of any and all practical effects. A little bit of blood—"

And nope. DJ grabbed Superfish and slapped his hand over his mouth, refusing to let go even when Superfish licked it. "That sounds like a great idea! The rest of us can help the both of you out."

Notes:

If you are curious about the poster mentioned here, search for “The Shining Polish Poster.” I think it quite accurately captures the eeriness of bodies that look vaguely human but are contorted in uncanny ways.
