Chapter 1: Sparkles in their Hearts

Chapter Text

A white-hooved, yellow unicorn stallion and orange haired, taller than all of the students, walked into the classroom.

And so, the lively classroom was in session, with the other fillies that were taught by the wizard called Sunburst. He is a powerful unicorn that was taught by Princess Celestia, one of the five well-known and powerful alicorns in Equestria. Sunburst trotted through the classroom, looking at everypony’s works.

One pony, in the back of the classroom, was Flurry Heart. She was a light pink-coloured filly, who had always slept through her classes and usually had no one to talk to. Her eyes were light blue and sapphire blue in the night and her light purple hair had light blue streaks with pink streaks going through them. She had grown since being a young filly, Sunburst was proud of her growing up to be a strong alicorn.

Flurry Heart was a special case to some, as she had been learning magic faster than others due to her being born an alicorn. She hadn’t taken her studies as seriously though and he had noticed.

Even Equestria’s lands had never seen an alicorn be born before, that he had been told by Celestia.

“Flurry Heart,” The stallion said in a stern manner. Flurry Heart wasn’t moving at all, soundlessly asleep. She was known to be a heavy sleeper, after all.

He sighed.

“Flurry Heart, wake up,” The stallion shook her. The half asleep filly woke up, seeing him.

“I was having the best sleep, Sunburst!” Flurry groaned in a tired way, making it seem more dramatic than it was.

Sunburst facepanned. He knew Flurry was being dramatical.

“You have to focus on your studies, Flurry. Your grades have been dropping at an alarming rate, even to the point where you might have to take a summer exam.” He mumbled, explaining to her.

She looked at him, then the chemical potions in front of her.

“Fine, Sunny, but I did my research already, look.” Flurry Heart showed him.

She dropped a wink of liquid in her plantation and a huge plant grew up, filling the room with thorny vines everywhere.

Sunburst gasped and did something before the vines could do something uncontrollable to the other classmates, knowing it would end badly if it grew farther.

His horn lit up, putting the vines away outside and opening the window.

He didn’t notice it was close for class to end, since the classroom bells rang and everypony packed their bags and ran outside to play for recess. Ponies always gathered after school to hang out with their friends usually, Sunburst noticing Flurry always being alone.

Flurry Heart giggled, noticing Sunburst’s shocked face and started packing her stuff.

“Something bad could’ve happened, Flurry!” Sunburst yelled, Flurry rolling her eyes.

Sometimes, Sunburst couldn’t keep up with her magic either. Alicorn magic was very powerful as most ponies knew.

“Why do you not care, someone really could’ve got hurt,” He continued, but heard someone step into the classroom. Sunburst turned around, but he saw Flurry Heart running to that somepony.

It was Twilight Sparkle, the Princess of Friendship, another alicorn who was Flurry’s aunt.

“I hope I’m not interrupting anything, Sunburst.” She said and pet Flurry Heart’s soft hair.

Sunburst nodded.

“It’s okay, Twilight. My class ended anyways,” He glared at Flurry, who was hugging Twilight.

“We do need to talk later though, about Flurry.” Sunburst mumbled in her ear, hoping his student didn’t hear him.

Twilight nodded, understanding.

“Flurry, how about we go back to the Crystal Empire? Your auntie has a surprise for you!” She exclaimed happily, Flurry Heart nodding.

As they left, Sunburst thought to himself.

How is Flurry going to survive when she hasn’t been studying seriously? I hope Cadence and Celestia are right. She will succeed, I hope.

“Auntie, what surprise do you have for me?” Flurry asked excitedly. She had always hated surprises, but Twilight’s surprises were on a different level. Twilight had always picked out the best gifts for her and took note of what she had wanted.

“You will see there, bug,” Twilight laughed, looking out at the train’s windows, seeing the meadows and lands of Equestria.

“I told you not to call me that, it’s embarrassing!” Flurry yelled.

“Fine, fine,” She giggled and they got to the Crystal Empire at last.

A lot of the crystal ponies were walking throughout the busy streets. As they saw Flurry Heart and Twilight Sparkle, they bowed quickly, before walking again.

Flurry had never been bowed to before, so this felt like a special occasion. But, seeing Twilight, she understood why. Twilight had been renowned as a princess many moons ago, but Flurry Heart had got her wings when she was born.

She felt left out, but walked alongside Twilight still. She didn’t want to worry her.

Sure, it was probably selfish to want ponies to bow for her, but she had felt left out a lot due to it.

No one really ever paid attention to her.

“You okay?” Twilight asked, Flurry not noticing her emotions were showing.

“Oh, yeah, I’m fine. Wondering about what you were going to surprise me with, I guess.” She explained and Twilight looked even more worried.

Flurry knew she was going to ask more, but they were already at the castle doors, next to the Crystal Heart and entering in.

“If you say so,” She opened the doors.

The Crystal Empire’s hallways always amazed Flurry. They were shiny, made out of rocks and other sorts of minerals and decorated neatly inside. She always wondered how her parents had cleaned it.

“Oh right,” Twilight said and put a blindfold on her.

“What’s this for?” She asked, but got pushed into a room instead.

Flurry heard noises and hooves go around her, before the blindfold was opened.

“Happy birthday, Flurry Heart!” They yelled with excitement. Everypony was there, even Twilight’s friend group, with whom she had saved Equestria multiple times with the Magic of Friendship.

Applejack, an orange pony always with her brown cowboy hat, as she had an apple farm called Sweet Apple Acres she took care of. Applejack’s cutiemark was three apples. Flurry didn’t know Applejack as much as the others, but she had tasted her apple pie and it was amazing, so she knew she was a good cook and baker. She especially loved their most famous treat, the zap apples. Zap apples were a rainbow coloured delicacy amongst most ponies and they had come from unnatural circumstances, lightning striking their trees to make their rainbow colour shine.

Fluttershy, a light yellow pony with soft pink hair was also there. She was her second favourite, as she had taught Flurry Heart how to tame animals and how animals never judged anyone. Animals would always accept who you are even if you would have made mistakes there and here, as Flutter had said. She was grateful Fluttershy was there, because Fluttershy had taught her the importance of animals and kindness to the different critters. Fluttershy’s cutiemark were three butterflies, which fit her a lot, in Flurry’s opinion. Flurry Heart was happy to see her kind and shy Fluttershy, since she hadn’t seen her in many moons. Fluttershy also had told her last time about her good friend who was a draconequus and introduced her to Discord, the embodiment of Chaos and Disharmony, who had turned good after they defeated him.

Pinkie Pie, a fully pink coloured pony that had her hair curled and messy. Her mane stuck out from everypony else’s, with the mess she had on. Pinkie Pie’s cutiemark was party balloons, as she was a party pony and party planner for everypony’s parties. Flurry Heart knew her to be an energetic and fun pony to be around and she was one of her favourites. She also knew that Pinkie’s memory was shocking, even to her, as she remembered everypony’s birthdays from the top of her head. Even though the friend group always fought about who was the best caretaker when she was a child, her instincts were to always go to Pinkie if Twilight wasn’t there for her.

Rarity, a white pony, who had her dark purple mane done well always for special occasions or even for the tiniest ones. Flurry always wondered how she took care of her hair and fashion taste, but she didn’t question it ever. She had always liked her, but Rarity had always her own dramatic sentences every now and then. Rarity also had her own boutiques in Canterlot, Ponyville and Manehattan. Flurry had remembered Rarity and Twilight always giving her many gifts due to them being rich.

Rainbow Dash, a light blue pony whose rainbow hair had never been taken care of due to her being too busy flying with the best fliers in Equestria, the Wonderbolts. Rainbow had also been a favorite of Flurry’s and she also had given the flying lessons with Flurry. Dash’s attitude was always a blast and she was genuinely fun to be around with. She had very good memories of Rainbow Dash racing with her and even her losing once, which was a shock to Flurry, as she had claimed to be the fastest flier in Equestria multiple times. She had probably let her won, though, knowing her. Rainbow looked confident with her pink eyes, looking straight at Flurry.

And then Twilight Sparkle, the Princess of Friendship and her aunt, who had a dark purple mane with her light streaks on her bangs. Twilight had been watching over her usually when her parents would’ve been too busy to do so, apparently, since Flurry didn’t really remember. She also had purple eyes, which fit her. Twilight had also taught her to control more magic at her young age and babysitting her many times. She was definitely Flurry’s favourite, since she understood a lot about her and how she was feeling most of the time.

Her parents were there too, Shining Armor and Princess Cadence. Shining Armor’s hair was dark blue and he was also a white pony, with sapphire blue eyes. Shining Armor was a Captain of the Royal Guard in Canterlot, where Princess Celestia and Princess Luna reigned over, watching Equestria’s lands. Shining Armor’s duties in Canterlot had been taking a break though, as Flurry had been born. He would be called if there was an emergency, which happened rarely or never.

Princess Cadence, on the other hoof, was another alicorn and Flurry’s mother, who was also a pink pony with purple tints in her wings and light purple eyes. Her mane was always well-taken care of too, which surprised Flurry due to her mane being long. Cadence’s hair had yellow streaks, following a pink and purple colour hue in her mane. Her mother had always been kind of a sass when she was younger, she had heard. Ponies always said that Flurry reminded them of her and compared her to her mother, which stuck to her head. Flurry was jealous of her a little, but she would never dare to admit so.

Princess Cadence smiled, hugging Shining Armor and waiting for Flurry’s reaction.

Flurry stared at everypony in shock. She hadn’t remembered it was her 13th birthday.

“Oh god, did she get scared?” Fluttershy asked Pinkie Pie quietly and with her soft-spoken voice.

Flurry Heart giggled.

“Thank you, everypony! I didn’t remember it was my birthday at all,” She explained, shocked and went to hug her auntie and friend group.

“Of course, anything for you, Flurry.” Twilight mumbled in her ear happily.

Letting go of the hug, Flurry noticed her parents sad and went to hug them too. She had an argument the night before with them, but she could hug them for this once, right? Flurry’s mom, Cadence, put her wings around them all, putting them closer to one another.

“Mama, stop,” She whined and the others laughed. Flurry hadn’t felt like this in months. Maybe the last time she felt this happy was when she had hung out with Twilight alone, but her parents had been arguing more lately and she was worried about their arguments. She hadn’t told anypony of how she was feeling nor her parents arguing.

As they let go of the hug, Flurry saw her dad crying.

“Are you crying?” Her eyes softened, looking at her dad wiping his tears away.

“No, I wasn’t,” He said, definitely crying. Her dad had always cried during birthdays or special occasions like weddings. He was known to do so in their family’s circle.

Flurry Heart laughed.

“Time to party!” Pinkie Pie yelled excitedly and the music started, Flurry going to dance with Pinkie and Twilight. They started a dance train, which was a tradition of theirs.

˚₊‧꒰ა ✦ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚

As the stars began to shine in the night sky, Princess Celestia and Princess Luna had come later to Flurry’s party. They had been busy with important matters, the mane six said. Flurry had always had a closer bond to Princess Luna, but Princess Celestia was fun to be around with too. It was a shame Celestia had less time during the days, but Luna had been hanging with Flurry every night when she was a younger filly. She had remembered those nights clearly.

Luna was a midnight shade of dark blue hue as her colour and her starry mane glistened in the night’s darkness. Princess Luna is the co-ruler of Equestria.

Celestia, the white pony, was the complete opposite of this, having very colourful wavy hair that shone during the day time. Princess Celestia is the ruler of Equestria.

Flurry ran up to hug them, as Celestia hugged her back and Luna patted her hair. Luna still hadn’t learned how to hug people, which made Flurry chuckle in her mind.

Sadly the party was already to a close, so they would probably have to leave soon to more important matters.

Of course, Flurry thought. There were more important ponies than her. She was acting selfishly. She shouldn’t have all the most powerful ponies on her side, as she hadn’t earned her wings through any powerful feat.

Flurry let go of the hug. She never let go from hugs, why did she this time?

She was selfish to think she earned their hugs.

“Flurry, what’s wrong?” Luna asked with a clear voice, alerting the others with it. Flurry felt like she was in the middle. The eyes of ponies looking at her.

“Nothing,” She gulped, sweaty hooves and a pumping heart. Flurry hoped no pony saw her sweaty, otherwise she would be caught with how she was feeling.

Celestia came up to her, holding her chin up and putting her wings to hug her. Flurry looked at her, nervously smiling.

She had tried to comfort her.

Flurry knew this was pity.

And she hated pity.

Twilight, her friend group and Flurry’s parents continued to talk after Luna’s conversation starter with Flurry Heart.

Celestia had kept her close and so had Luna in front of her. It was as if they needed to talk to her about something important privately.

“Come, Flurry Heart.” Celestia sighed, walking slowly to open the door to the hallways.

Flurry followed as Celestia walked further away, Luna catching up with them whilst talking to the others about something.

She wondered what was going on. Flurry Heart knew she wasn’t in danger or trouble, she had never been in trouble, at least she had thought so.

“What’s wrong, Celestia?” She asked. Celestia had put her enormous white wings down and looked back at both Luna and Flurry Heart.

“We know you have been struggling.” Princess Luna trotted next to Celestia, telling her upfront. Princess Celestia nodded.

Flurry didn’t understand. How did they know? Was it her nightmares that Luna could go into or was it because of that one time she said she was feeling bad? This was going to be bad, or rather, this is going to be bad.

She hoped they never would’ve found out, nor told anyone, but she continued to listen to them.

“Yes, Flurry Heart. We have noticed. Your studies aren’t going exactly the way we planned,” Celestia continued.

Oh, thank Celestia!

It was only about her studies. She couldn’t care less about them.

“What about them?” She asked, curious.

Celestia shared a worried glance with Luna.

“Flurry Heart, even if you cannot focus on your studies, you have a destiny to follow, so did Twilight, Cadence, Luna and I. So do you, as an alicorn. You can’t just flunk out. We understand it may be hard for you, but you might face dangers ahead of you. Your magic is very powerful, as everyone knows and can’t be as controllable as our magic. This is because you were born an alicorn, the first one to ever be born, Flurry Heart.” She explained with a long breath, Luna nodding next to her.

So because I was born one, I have powers no pony’s ever had before? Flurry thought. It seemed crazy, but she thought she would be the weakest one due to her being born one.

“This is why we will be taking you under our wings too, when you are ready for your training. We have been the oldest alicorns during these eons in Equestria and we know the most of magic, so it would make more sense if we put you in private lessons than public ones with other fillies.” Luna explained.

Flurry Heart was taking this all in, she hadn’t expected this. She thought she was going to get in trouble for all the times she hadn’t focused in class.

“There is one rule though, Flurry.” Celestia said, before Flurry got too excited with the private lessons.

“What’s that?” She questioned and Celestia nodded to Luna.

“You have to show that you’re ready by training with us everyday from now on,” The Ruler of Equestria, Celestia, said.

“And you have to take your studies seriously this time,” The co-ruler of Equestria, Princess Luna, explained.

Flurry didn’t understand why she would have to do all of this now and not earlier. She hadn’t got her reasons and why’s.

“But why now?” She asked both of them.

“Let me show you,” Celestia sighed. Her horn lit up, showing a golden sparkly aura, casting a spell.

Celestia’s eyes turned dark, as dark as the void. Her pupils turned dark purple. It was as if her form had changed fully. Celestia’s coat colour was a dark mossy green, with her void-like eyes and with a tall vined tiara on her mane. Her mane was a dark tropical cyan blue with no shine in them anymore, complete stillness. This mane had looked familiar, but Flurry hadn’t remembered where from anymore.

Celestia had become a bit shorter as well, showing the full form on view. The form was as tall as Cadence, her mother.

The sight made her shiver. This looked to be bad, but Luna didn’t fret and came closer to Celestia after Flurry saw the full form.

After Luna had hoof touched Celestia, she had turned back into her normal form. It was Celestia’s own magic changing her form. Flurry had never heard of a spell like that before.

“See what we mean? Celestia had seen a danger filled vision in the future and she saw you in it. We don’t know what else the future holds, but you have to be ready, Flurry.” Princess Luna explained.

Flurry Heart nodded, but knew she wouldn’t be ready in even a couple moons. Her studies were behind the others’. Sure, she had mastered almost all of the easier spells and so on, but she hadn’t focused as much on the harder ones and maybe learned less about how to focus on her own magic spells. The harder ones would maybe even take many moons for her to focus and study on. She had only learned the easier ones, which she had used for many moons.

“I didn’t know I was this much of importance.” Flurry Heart mumbled out loud accidentally, but quietly to herself.

“What did you say, Flurry?” Celestia asked with a soft-spoken voice.

“Just talking to myself,” She fakely laughed.

Princess Celestia nodded, walking back to the party and Princess Luna followed her. Flurry Heart followed them a bit behind, her head dizzy with all of this important information pouring at her.

Just what did the future hold? Flurry Heart pondered worriedly.

She had heard of dangers before that the other Princesses had to go through, but hadn’t heard their feats nor adventures in full detail.

Flurry was scared of the dangers ahead, as the future sounded like a terrible place.

She had to get ready. As an alicorn, she would have to protect the other ponies. Flurry made up her mind.

She would start taking things seriously.
