The valley was drowning in mist.
Naegi Makoto adjusted the small straw hat resting between his fluffy raccoon ears. He was a Bake-danuki—a shapeshifting trickster spirit. However, unlike the legendary pranksters of old, Makoto was terribly clumsy. His leaves usually turned into counterfeit coins that smelled like sweet potatoes, and his disguises always left his striped tail exposed. Yet, he possessed a strange, supernatural luck that kept him safe from the deadliest hunters.
"You are a very loud creature for something so small," a cool, detached voice murmured from the shadows of the shrine.
Makoto blinked, turning to see a magnificent violet Kitsune stepping through the torii gate. Kirigiri Kyoko possessed three sleek tails, her fur the color of twilight, and her hands were covered in elegant, flame-resistant leather gloves to hide the scars of old spiritual burns. She was a detective of the spirit world, tracking down curses.
"Ah! Sorry!" Makoto smiled, his round ears twitching. He offered her a steamed bun. "You look tired. Want half? The mist gets thick here, but it's safe."
Kyoko stared at the offering, her amber eyes searching his soul for deception. She found none. Slowly, she took the bun. "A tanuki who feeds a fox is either incredibly foolish or extraordinarily brave."
"I just think everyone looks better when they aren't hungry," Makoto laughed.
Their peaceful valley was not hidden for long. A blinding golden light pierced the fog as a colossal Ryū—a heavenly dragon—descended from the clouds. Togami Byakuya assumed his human form, wearing an immaculate, silk-spun kimono, his eyes gleaming with absolute arrogance.
"Hmph. A gathering of peasants," Togami scoffed, looking at Makoto’s humble shrine. "This valley is now under the jurisdiction of the Togami estate. Move along, trash."
"Hey! Dragons don't own the dirt!" a booming voice roared.
Stepping out from the bamboo thicket was Oogami Sakura. She was a towering Oni, her skin a fierce slate-grey, horns protruding proudly from her white hair. Her sheer physical presence made even the dragon pause. Beside her swam Asahina Aoi, a cheerful Ningyo(mermaid) splashing happily in the shrine’s sacred purification pool, tossing a spiritual donut-shaped pastry in the air.
"Sakura is right! Leave the little guy alone!" Hina cheered, her fish scales shimmering in the moonlight.
The valley, it turned out, was a magnet for the displaced.
In the dark corners of the shrine archives crawled Fukawa Touko. She was a Tsuchigumo(spider demon), constantly hiding behind her silk webs and muttering about how everyone loathed her. But whenever she caught sight of the shiny dragon, her split personality took over. She would transform into Genocider Syo—a frenetic Jorōgumowielding giant golden scissors, cackling wildly while chasing Togami up the mountain.
Others found refuge in the growing community.
Fujisaki Chihiro was a Tsukumogami—a spirit born from an ancient, discarded wooden abacus that had lived for over a hundred years. Chihiro could communicate with all mechanical and spiritual objects, helping the loud Karasu-Tengu (crow demon) Kuwata Leon repair his flying gear, and weaving protective wards for Maizono Sayaka, a beautiful Yuki-Onna whose icy breath turned into beautiful, glittering musical notes when she sang.
Guarding the western perimeter were the hounds. Owada Mondo was an Inugami (dog spirit) with a massive, fiery pompadour who rode a spiritual motorcycle made of hellfire. Beside him walked Ishimaru Kiyotaka, a pristine Komainu (guardian lion-dog) who constantly barked about proper spiritual protocol and lane discipline, ensuring Mondo didn't burn down the forest.
"You're out of order, Owada-kun! Hellfire must be extinguished by 10:00 PM!" Ishimaru bellowed.
"Shut up, Taka! It builds character!" Mondo snapped back, though he lowered the flames anyway.
Hovering above them all was Hagakure Yasuhiro, a lazy Hitodama (ghost orb) whose predictions were only accurate thirty percent of the time, and Yamada Hifumi, a Nurarihyon spirit who spent his days sneaking into the shrine kitchens to draft detailed scrolls of mythical maidens.
But the mist carried a darker rot.
From the shifting shadows emerged Enoshima Junko. She was a corrupted Kyūbi no Kitsune—a nine-tailed fox of pure malice, her fur stained black and white, radiating an aura of absolute despair that threatened to drive the valley mad. At her side stood Ikusaba Mukuro, a fierce, silent Inugami covered in tactical armor, her blades dripping with shadow-venom.
"Look at this pathetic little family," Junko laughed, her voice shifting through a dozen unsettling personalities. "Shall we watch them tear each other apart? Despair is so much fun when it's sacred!"
The air grew heavy. Fukawa shrieked, Soda hid behind the shrine, and even Togami bared his dragon fangs.
But Makoto stepped forward. He didn't transform into a giant beast. He remained a small, fluffy tanuki holding a simple wooden staff.
"We won't fight each other," Makoto said, his voice ringing clear through the oppressive dark. "We've all been hunted. We've all been feared. But here, we found a place where we belong. Your despair can't touch that, Enoshima!"
Kyoko stepped to his side, her violet fox tails bursting into brilliant, cleansing spiritual flames. Sakura slammed her fists together, cracking the earth. Mondo and Ishimaru stood flank-to-flank, a wall of pure guardian energy.
Faced with the unbreakable wall of their shared hope, Junko sneered, clicking her tongue as Mukuro dissolved into the shadows ahead of her. "Boring. You guys are no fun when you're this stubborn."
The dark mist receded. The morning sun broke over the mountain, bathing the shrine in warm gold.
Makoto exhaled, his ears flopping down in relief. Kyoko patted his head gently, a rare, soft smile gracing her lips. Togami huffed, crossing his arms but making no move to leave the valley he had threatened to seize.
They were creatures of ancient nightmares. But under the open sky, holding onto each other, they were simply a family waiting for the dawn.
