The high peaks were frozen in crystal.
Munakata Kyosuke stood at the precipice of the mountain shrine, his silver hair catching the pale moonlight. From his temples grew twin, glowing antlers of pure spiritual energy. He was a Kirin—a sacred, holy beast of absolute justice and purity. His steps never harmed a single blade of grass, yet his dual katanas were forged from exorcism-fire. He was dedicated to destroying the dark miasma plaguing the land, but his crusade had left him cold, rigid, and isolated.
"Kyosuke, you are brooding so loudly that the snow is melting," a warm voice teased.
Yukizome Chisa floated beside him, her apron smelling of sweet rice and pine needles. She was an Ubume—a maternal bird spirit born from the desire to protect lost souls. Her beautiful, feathery wings were tucked neatly beneath her white robes, and she held a broom made of enchanted willow twigs.
"The darkness is spreading, Chisa," Munakata replied, his gaze fixed on the valley below. "We must be absolute. Weakness will destroy us."
"And strength without love will freeze you solid," Chisa countered gently, resting her head against his shoulder. The holy light of his antlers softened instantly at her touch.
Stepping out from the shadows of the torii gate was Sakakura Juzo. He was a massive Oni(ogre demon), his skin a deep crimson, and his fists wrapped in blessed heavy iron chains. He was a creature born of violence, but his absolute, unwavering loyalty belonged entirely to the Kirin.
"Let the scum try to climb this high," Juzo grunted, slamming his fists together to create a shower of defensive sparks. "I'll crack their skulls before they even see the shrine steps."
The mountain sanctuary was home to the remnants of a fractured generation.
Cowering inside the main hall was Mitarai Ryota. He was a Baku—a fragile, mammalian dream-eating spirit. He carried a magical glowing scroll that could project illusions of pure, soothing hope, but he was perpetually exhausted, his eyes heavy with dark circles from absorbing the nightmares of the human world.
"I-I just want to create a dream where no one has to suffer," Ryota whispered, clutching his scroll tightly as he sat near the warm fire. The other outcasts kept a fragile peace across the slopes:
Great Gozu was an Umibōzu variant—a towering bull-headed sea guardian who had climbed the rivers to protect the mountain, wearing a fierce minotaur mask to hide his gentle eyes. Beside him sat Bandai Daisaku, a giant Kodama (tree spirit) whose voice was strangely high-pitched, constantly speaking in bizarre agrarian proverbs.
Moving mechanically through the corridors was Gekkocharan (Miaya). She was a flawless Karakuri clockwork doll, controlled by a tiny, hidden rabbit spirit, analyzing the spiritual stability of the sanctuary. Watching over them all from a high branch was Kizakura Koichi, a lazy Kitsune who spent his days drinking spiritual sake, and Tengan Kazuo, an ancient, wise Kami of the mountain who watched the youth with a melancholic smile.
But even this high, a bitter rot festered among the younger spirits.
Kimura Seiko was a tragic Jorōgumo (spider demon). She hid her face behind a heavy medical mask, her multiple spider limbs tightly bound by spiritual bandages. She desperately brewed healing potions from mountain herbs, trying to win back the favor of her former friend, Ando Ruruka.
Ruruka was a manipulative Bakeneko (two-tailed cat spirit) who could craft magical, addictive confections that placed anyone who ate them under her absolute thrall. "If Seiko really cared about me, she’d make a potion to cure my sweet-spoiling magic," Ruruka huffed, lounging on a silk cushion while her loyal protector, Izayoi Sonosuke, stood guard. Izayoi was a Tsukumogami born from a legendary blacksmith's favorite dagger, his sleeves concealing an endless supply of flying spirit-blades.
One evening, the corrupted black-and-white mist of Enoshima Junko’s despair crept up the mountain, twisting the minds of the fragile spirits.
Ryota's scroll began to leak black nightmares. Ruruka’s sweets turned to ash, and Seiko, consumed by old grievances, ripped her bandages apart. Her spider limbs grew massive, her eyes glowing a feral red as she lashed out blindly in pain.
"It's over!" Munakata declared, his Kirin antlers blazing with a blinding, merciless white fire as he drew his dual swords. "They have been corrupted! I must purge them!"
"Kyosuke, no!" Chisa cried out, spreading her magnificent wings to block his path. "They aren't enemies! They're just hurting!"
Seiko lunged, her razor-sharp spider legs snapping toward Chisa. But before Munakata could strike, Juzo threw his massive Oni body into the fray, using his iron chains to bind Seiko’s limbs, taking the brunt of her venomous slashes without flinching.
"Munakata... look closer!" Juzo roared, his red skin burning from the toxin. "Don't just kill everything that breaks!"
Ryota, trembling with fear, looked at his friends tearing each other apart. Inspired by their sacrifice, he unrolled his scroll completely. He poured all of his remaining spiritual energy into the canvas, projecting a massive, radiant wave of comforting light that bathed the entire mountain peak.
The nightmare illusions shattered. The black mist receded.
Seiko gasped, shrinking back into her fragile human form, weeping as the corruption left her. Ruruka rushed forward, throwing her arms around Izayoi, while Chisa immediately knelt to tend to Juzo’s deep wounds.
Munakata stood frozen, his swords lowering slowly. His holy Kirin light reflected the tears of his friends. He realized that his desire for absolute purification had almost blinded him to the very people he wanted to protect.
He sheathed his blades, walking over to press his glowing forehead against Chisa’s cheek, then extending a hand to pull Juzo up.
"I was wrong," Munakata murmured, his voice softening into a gentle breeze. "We survive together. Or not at all."
Under the high, starry sky, the mountain spirits gathered close, healing each other in the quiet dark. They were a scarred, heavy-hearted generation, but in the warmth of their shared sanctuary, they had finally found a peace that didn't require a sword.
