— Blood, Politics, and Bloody Politics —
The United Nations Security Council meeting. Not even the sharpest knife can cut through the tension in the air. The weight of the talks was almost unbearable. While leaders pitted the value of human life against the possibility of economic gain, the nation's avatars sat quietly in the backroom, excluded from the decision making as usual. Russia desperately tried to keep a calm and neutral expression whilst among his leaders, but once he stepped foot into the backroom, he could feel the piercing glares of his fellow personifications.
He can’t do it. His lip quivered, and his barely kept calm facade shattered. He let his eyes frantically search for his sisters, pleading them to look at him. Belarus sat motionless in the back corner, avoiding the sight of both her siblings. She wasn’t supposed to be here but peace talks were to be held in her country so her leader wanted to hear the meeting. Ukraine was sitting close to America, arms crossed and glaring hard at the floor.
"Katyu- "
At the sight of Russia, Ukraine could not contain it any longer. "WHY, why are you doing this in Russia. Jealous of my happiness? Jealous of my freedom? Why must you take this from me?! From my people?! Oh how you miss the Soviet days, I know you miss how we were all together, but have you thought of my feelings? Do you know how much this hurts, to feel missiles explode like fireworks across my country, with every death being a slash across my back and a bullet to my bleeding heart. From my brother no else.
Call me Ukraine, and let the name be a reminder to your country’s actions."
Ouch, she always used to call him Ivan. Nothing hurt more than to hear the venom in his sister’s voice, his sister, who was always mellow and kind towards him. "…pl- please Katyusha… please please you have to believe me, I- I can’t stop him, I really tried to, I don’t want to hurt you or your people, I want this to stop…I want to stop. Please, Katyusha" he frantically uttered, tears forming in his eyes.
Deep down, Ukraine knew this wasn’t Ivan’s fault, he and his people protested in support of her country, to no avail. But still, the lingering bitter taste of the Soviet era soured her expression, and anger simmered in her heart.
"Yeah Russia, dude that’s so not cool, you can’t just invade peaceful countries. Now look what you’ve done, you’ve forced the kind and sweet Ukraine to speak so harshly. You’ve always claimed Ukrainians and Russians to be the same people, and yet here you are, killing them in cold blood. You won’t get away with this, the world is against you, right everyone?" America interjected.
A chorus of "yes" sounded throughout the room. India suddenly found the crack on the wall incredibly fascinating, and started nervously inching closer towards the door.
"That’s rich coming from you America." China scoffed. "Already forgetting all those innocent Middle Eastern nations that were torn apart by your bombs? Not to mention, you constantly kill your own people, or have you already forgotten the racism in your country?"
"Oh yeah? You’re one to speak, seeing as your hands are more bloody than mine, or have you forgotten the current pandemic we’re in, the current genocide and oppression of your own ethnic minorities, and how you’re basically supporting Russia’s "special operation""
"First of all, the coronavirus happened naturally, and if you want to point fingers, I would love to have a conversation about the Spanish Flu. My people are thriving, we have developed infrastructure at an unprecedented speed, just take a look the number of high speed rails we have in comparison to your own (Ohhh waaait you don’t have any), our people are free from western imperialism and have the freedom to live a safe and stable life, which is more than I can say about America. Also, the so called "genocide" is western fabricated propaganda designed to de-stablized the XinJiang reigon with the aim to cut off my country from direct access to the Middle East. And, my country has not voiced any official support for Russia’s activity in Ukraine, though it does recognise the valid security concerns NATO poses to Russia if Ukraine were to fall into your hands."
Before England and America has a chance to reply, UAE cuts in, "Enough. This won’t solve anything, we need to focus on maintaining peace."
Russia can feel China leaning close to him while the others are caught up in their own discussions, he holds his hand firmly, and whispers. "You must know, even if officially we are neutral, my people stand with you. China stands with you. I stand with you."
Russia stares sadly at Ukraine and America, "I know."
But I don’t want to be on your side. I want to be on theirs.
