Chapter Text
“What does it mean to be human?”
The words escape my lips before I even realize I even came up with the question.
The white haired man walking beside me slowly turned his head, his gaze piercing into my skull.
“What?”
The man is tall, but not much taller than I. His skin is a warm nude sort of color, scars dancing across his face and broad chest. The intent of his gaze is somewhat unclear, a mix of his normal short tempered-ness mixed with an odd calm.
“You know, it would be nice if you spoke up”
“It's not important, don't get your panties in a twist”
I mutter as we continue to walk. The sky is dark, in a peaceful way. The stars gleaming softly behind the haze of the clouds in the sky, a moon shining down at all who stand below. A cool wind blows against my face, I lift my hand to push my hair from my face.
The man groans at my words, the annoyance in his body language is clear. He lifts his arms above his head, stretching them out before interlocking behind his head.
“How much longer till we get there again?”
He's oddly calm at the moment, his steps quiet against the path below us. His voice is deep, and a bit raspy but comforting in a way; like when leaves rustle in a cool breeze.
“Not far longer, I believe it's only an hour before we actually get there”
“Ugh… the demon better still be in the area when we get there”
He speeds up his walking pace, not by much just enough so that he's walking in front of me. His hair a light-warm grayish color, causing him to stand out again the dark night around us.
It's almost disappointing, yet alluring. A human blessed with beauty by whatever divine beings puppet us around like pawns on a chessboard. Yet all you express is your endless rage. Are you truly angry, or are you simply…human?
The question is left unanswered in my mind as we continue our journey, each step we take bringing us closer to our destination. I pray this mission doesn't take too long, I am already hungry again. Always hungry. A flaw of my creation, or at least that's what some would believe. I am not very affected by my large appetite, I can still last quite long without food so it isn't a problem it is simply a minor inconvenience.
As we reach our destination, an empty silence consumes both of us. The somewhat large estate devoid of life, like the soul that once filled the rooms was torn away from it. Trinkets left untouched as we separate, exploring different sides of the estate in order to find the demon we were sent to kill.
Then, I opened the door to the far bedroom. The sight of a decomposing feast of crimson, bugs had already found their way inside a man and a woman laying on the ground. The bugs are already consuming the slowly rotting flesh of their wounds. The sight of Bowels poured out upon the Blood stained floor. The smell of death slowly consumes the room as they give into the decay.
“...how tragic” I let out in an unconscious mumble, I slowly step back. My eyes never leave the blank lifeless eyes of the corpses before me, all I can bring myself to do is slowly walk backwards out of the room and closing the door. The door groans in mild agony as it grinds against the ground, the slide is just as agonizing to me as It is to the door itself. My hand remains on the door frame as I get lost in my thoughts, I've never been good at death. The sight drowns me, grips at my every limb like chains dragging me down into the earth. The sound of a yell snaps me back to reality, the voice so oddly calm before now one of anger-an anger that's almost comforting.
“TOMIOKA! HURRY UP WE NEED TO HEAD OUT, THE DEMON AIN'T HERE” his voice echos through the hallways, I glance towards the direction the noise comes from. I turn unhurriedly walking to the man, my steps light against the brown wood panels on the floor below. I turn a corner, the front door of the house is open. The man is standing outside leaning against a pillar, his short white hair shifting slightly in the breeze. I take a second to admire his calm expression, his eyes relaxed as he watches the run rise above the horizon. It's almost beautiful. He is beautiful.
“Oh finally, it took you long enough. Now come on, let's just go.”
He pushes off the pillar, waving me over. I step out of the house looking down at him from the porch as he begins to head off down the path once more. The birds begin to chirp in the tree, the sun reaching to the sky bringing a warm glow to all under its glowing golden eye. I finally walk down the steps and begin to catch up to him.
As the sun slowly rises above the trees, covering the endless horizons beyond us. The sun is warm against my skin, the breeze light grazing against the leaves of the trees whispering of a thousand soft voices that flow through the woods surrounding us.
"Where do you think the demon went?"
He responds rather quickly, his voice gruff and annoyed
"How do you expect me to know?" He crosses his arms letting out a tired sigh.
"So irritating…it can't be to far right?"
"Hmm…depends. Could be a few minutes away…or a few hours, but that's probably to much for you"
He looks at me, clearly at least mildly offended by the sass
"What is that supposed to mean?"
"Nothing" I glance away from him, the trees are a beautiful bright green this time of year, it's around the time the Sakura trees will begin to bloom. I told myself last year I would see them on a day off…and the year before that..and before that. I'm not really good with plans, I don't enjoy taking breaks from work either..I make a mental note about it, I'll visit them this year, it is a fruitless promise. Somethings are simply bound to never happen, but hope isn't a bad thing; .
