Summary
Alfred numbly ruminates on his relationship with Ivan after severing his head. Bereavement for the man who was once his lover is a luxury he cannot grant himself. His country remains his foremost priority, even at the expense of his own desires. Ivan’s mind had been marred by a destructive ideology that stood in direct opposition to Alfred’s own beliefs.
