The Ignition of the Current

Summary:

To kickstart her dormant magic after a devastating loss, Bonnie must perform a taboo ritual to channel Damon's subconscious emotions, only to uncover the fierce, hidden reality of what he truly feels for her

Work Text:

The candlesticks on the Salvatore library table rattle against the wood, driven by a phantom wind inside the room.

Bonnie sits cross-legged on the floor, her palms facing upward, her fingers trembling with a profound, hollow exhaustion. The battle at the quarry had drained her completely, stripping away her connection to the ancestral spirits and leaving her magic dormant, like a dried-out riverbed. Beside her lies an open grimoire, its fragile yellow pages detailing the forbidden ignition ritual: a Bennett witch could restart her lineage by anchoring her mind to the kinetic, dark currents of an ancient vampire’s psyche.

Damon stands near the fireplace, a crystal glass of bourbon clutched tight in his hand. He watches the shallow rise and fall of her chest, his usual smug defense mechanism utterly shattered.

"You're sure about this, Bennett?" Damon asks, his deep voice carrying an unusual, tense edge. "The book says you have to swim through the deep end of my head. It's a savage neighborhood. There are monsters in there that make the originals look like house pets."

"My ancestors locked the door from the inside when the spell broke, Damon," Bonnie replies, her gaze fixed on the floorboards as she forces a calm posture. "Your emotions are the only battery strong enough to tear it back open. I need raw, unfiltered vitality. I need the dark stuff."

Damon sets the glass down with a sharp, decisive clink. He moves instantly. He crosses the room, his black boots echoing against the stone floor, and drops down directly opposite her. The close proximity forces her to breathe in his scent—the cold scent of winter air, cedarwood, and the faint, bitter trace of stale alcohol.

"Remember my warning," he murmurs. He extends his hands, placing his palms flat against hers.

The moment their skin meets, Bonnie closes her eyes and chants the ancient syllables. “Sanguis et anima. Conecte.”

The world drops away instantly.

A sudden, violent surge of raw power fractures the barrier of her mind, slamming into her veins like molten lightning. It is a kinetic, thrumming force, vibrating with centuries of unholy life. But as Bonnie pushes deeper into his subconscious, searching for the spark to ignite her own bloodline, the darkness clears. She bypasses the chaotic, bloodthirsty malice she expected from the eldest Salvatore.

Instead, she is pulled into a suffocating, breathtaking vortex of pure emotion.

Images flash before her inner eye with terrifying clarity, vivid fragments of memories foreign to her. She sees herself through his eyes, sleeping on the couch in the boarding house while the fire burns low, her face soft in the embers. She feels the precise texture of his silent admiration for her absolute, unyielding strength—a profound awe that he had hidden behind insults for years.

Then comes the terror.

It hits her like a physical blow, a paralyzing, agonizing panic that leaves her gasping for air. It is Damon's deepest nightmare: the image of her body breaking, of her blood spilling on the forest floor, of a world existing where Bonnie Bennett is gone. The sheer magnitude of his devotion is a tidal wave, a fierce, protective love so vast and absolute that it completely consumes the edges of his identity. He protects her far beyond any obligation to Elena; he protects her because she has become his entire universe.

The raw power of his love slams against the sealed gates of her magic. With a deafening, metaphysical roar, the Bennett lineage ignites. The ancestral fire wakes up, rushing through her forearms in a wave of bright, golden heat.

A cold gasp cuts her breathing short as the bond breaks, dropping her right back into the silent library.

She pulls her hands back, her fingers pulsing with a fierce, rhythmic vibration. The golden sparks fade from her skin, but the air between them remains charged, thick with the scent of ozone and the sudden, overwhelming heat of the ritual.

Damon is hunched over, his hands resting on his knees, his shoulders shaking as he tries to rebuild the mental walls she just tore down. He looks up through his dark hair, his blue eyes wide, completely stripped of his armor, exposing a raw, breathless vulnerability.

Bonnie stares at him, her chest heaving, the absolute certainty of what she just witnessed burning in her mind. The lie they had told the world—and each other—lies shattered on the floor.

"Damon," she whispers, her voice shaking but carrying a newfound, unyielding iron.

Damon closes his mouth, the cynical deflection dying on his tongue before he can even form the words. The emotional exposure is too absolute, too real to deny. He reaches out slowly, his calloused thumb catching the edge of her jaw, anchoring her to the present moment.

"I told you," Damon says, his voice a rough, low whisper against the quiet of the library. "It's a dangerous place to look."
