Work Text:
If the person you love most in the world is standing on the other side of the room pointing a gun at you, there must have been a reason.
There is always a reason.
But if the person on the other side of the room is also a girl that you had psychologically tortured, emotionally manipulated, and lead on to establish a false sense of security, only to turn your back on her and take it all away with a pair of handcuffs and a measly prison sentence when things got too messy, well-
There had been more than enough reason.
And it occurs to him as the masked-up girl nimbly raises her gun in his direction, that the reason might well be enough to kill him.
“Lack-Two.” The girl stutters, and the moment of hesitation in her eyes is familiar enough to identify her as Whi-Two, yet chilly as it’s immediately followed by her pressing lightly on the trigger.
“Surprised to see me?” She continues without pause, and it’s shocking to see how her previously trembling fingers have become completely firm with bloodlust, with not even a trace remaining of the person she once was.“Unfortunately, I can’t say the same. I’ve been looking forward to this.”
She gazes at him through the rear sight of her gun with the determination of one who is ready to press “play” any time. Lack-Two can’t help but smile.
The irony is not lost on him.
“I’m saddened to see our reunion happening on such bad terms,” he answers merrily.
“Quit it.” Her stormy blue eyes clarify once more as she redirects the gun back to his chest, where an imperceptible red dot now steadily blinks, “You know what you’re here for.”
“What am I here for?” He replies, with contrived innocence.
The bullet shoots inches past his cheek and shatters a hole through the nearby wall before he can even blink twice.
Right.
He really should care of this messy business before that happens again.
And takes him with it. “For back then, when I trusted you.” She says, and despite the dark veil covering her face the storms coming back into her eyes remain an easy tell. “I confessed my crimes to you, with the hope that we could work something out together, that you’d understand-“
And despite his best efforts, Lack-Two remembers it all too well. Her confessional of working for the criminal organisation called Team Plasma which had been hurting the entire region. His thought that this was the perfect chance to pretend to safe-guard her, until she could be safely put away.
”Instead, you threw me to the wolves.” The previously tame girl now enunciates her words with gritted teeth.
That part of his plan doesn’t seem so bulletproof now, does it?
“You would’ve been safer in prison.” He explains, raising his hands in a last-ditch attempt to get some sympathy or hesitation out of her, just long enough for him to turn on his heels and scram, or at least take her down with him. “Especially compared to now, when you’ve joined their side. Now, I couldn’t save you if I tried.”
”But you didn’t try!” Lack-Two flinches at the interjection as the gun in her hand trembles once again along with her lips. “You were about to leave me there all alone, what was I supposed to do?!”
“Not… that.” He replies with a mild raise of brow as the gun dangerously tilts in her hands, once again.
“They accepted me.” She says, and Lack-Two decodes that immediately, the pause that suggests she’s still confused and blinded. “They didn’t throw me away just cause of my mistakes. They’re not like you or the Interpol. They give me second chances, they-“
She looks up at his eyes almost like she’s searching for something.
But Lack-Two will not give it to her.
”They’re not impenetrable.” She trails off, “They stick around for their friends…”
Lack-Two slowly waits for her hands to drop, including the one with the gun.
“You stopped being my friend the second you joined their side.” He remarks, hoping that it’d be enough to distract her.
And to his surprise, her hand drops.
Just long enough for him to see the blank expression in her eyes before she raises it again.
”Good bye, Lack-Two.” She states with firm lips as the man once again meets death in the eye.
It’s incredibly scary how one’s last few moments can bring certain things into light, with all the memories coming back, almost in slow motion. The fact that he had used and abused her, and how his actions had lead her to this very place and turned her into every bit of the monster she became.
So now Lack-Two can’t really say he’s surprised when she says “See you never.” And the bullet cuts straight through his line of sight.
And all that echoes in his mind during this great ordeal is:
What a great miscalculation.
But to die by her hands may have been a wonderful way to die.
