John leaves. The door clicks shut, his footsteps fade down the stairs, the front door opens and closes. Sherlock stands at the window and watches him cross the street, shoulders hunched, hands in his coat pockets. John doesn't look back. He rounds the corner and disappears
"He always leaves"
Sherlock picks up the violin. Plucks a note — a thin, high sound that cuts through the silence
"Always goes for a walk when he's tired"
Another note. Lower
"Always comes back after an hour. Two at most"
He settles the violin on his shoulder. A slow melody drifts out — not Vivaldi, not anything. Just loose notes floating in the air
"He'll come back. He always comes back"
The note stretches. Vibrates. Dies
"Doesn't he?"
The question hangs in the air. The wind rattles the sign outside. The street is empty
