Work Text:
Light couldn't sleep. Most people in his situation wouldn't be able to, unless they were used to being handcuffed to an insomniac who requests room service every ten minutes. At the rate this was going, Light would have eyebags as big as L's within a few days.
L, was sitting on his tiptoes, resting his back against the headboard with his laptop on full brightness. He was eating creme brulee, and every time he dipped his spoon in for another bite, Light could hear the sugar coating crack and the spoon tap against the ramekin. Every tiny noise echoed inside of his head. Every little movement of L's wrist made the handcuffs jingle and tug against Light's skin.
I wish I was Kira so I could kill him, Light thought. Instead, Light laid facedown into a pillow, and pulled another pillow around his ears. L was, once again, calling Watari.
"Could you stop calling Watari? I'd like a little rest."
"No."
"If you wanted more sweets, you could have some of mine." Everytime Watari brought something for L, he also brought one for Light. There were about five different desserts on his nightstand.
L reached over Light and grabbed a cup of hot chocolate. "Thank you, but that's not what I called Watari for." Light lifted his head from under the pillows and raised his eyebrows curiously. "One of the CEO's killed by Yotsuba's Kira died a week ago. He came to Japan for work and died after a buisiness meeting with them. He was dining out at a restaraunt."
"And…?"
"That same restaraunt has reported paranormal activity."
"That's impossible."
"Not really. If Kira can kill without ever coming into contact with his victim, then anything else is possible."
Watari entered the room, handing L a file of documents. And, of course, two bowls of vanilla ice cream topped with strawberry syrup. L handed Light a bowl, looked through the documents, and then handed those to Light.
The pictures caught Light's attention first. The first one was fuzzy, but if you squinted hard enough, you could find the silhouette of a man, collapsed over a table. Orbs of dim light surrounded the man. Most importantly, you could see the scenery through the man's body.
The next picture was of floating plates. Bloody floating plates, to be specific.
"I intend to investigate this myself tomorrow."
"And I'll be joining you?"
"Correct."
"Why can't you get someone else to investigate?"
"The police won't intestigate if it has to do with Kira. And, I don't know how the rest of the force will react to something like this. It's likely that both the police and the taskforce would ignore this due to implausibility." Light sighed. L finally got an HQ so that they could stop moving place to place, and now they're leaving. "The restaraunt isn't far from here, so we'll be leaving at 6 AM. A ghost hunting company already started investigating, but they'll be handing the investigation over to us."
Light looked at the clock. 4:23 AM. L continued typing on his laptop. Light already knew he'd be getting no sleep. Well, maybe he's wrong. His eyelids felt heavy, and as long as L didn't move…
Light woke up. 6:01 AM. So, about an hour and forty minutes of sleep. He was sweaty, his left arm was asleep, and he had a little bit of drool on his chin. Great. Perfect.
"Wake up, Light. We're going soon." How could L be so well rested? Still tired, Light stood up, reaching for a glass of water before L pulled him away. If Light were Kira, L would absolutely be dead. This has to be considered torture.
"How long is the drive?" Light asked.
"About forty minutes."
That's not that bad. He has time to take a nap. As long as the road is smooth. And L doesn't move around too much. And the car is quiet. Yeah, that's possible. (Today is going to be a long day.)
L led Light into the garage of the skyskaper. Watari was waiting for them by an inconspicuous grey car with heavily tinted windows. L and Light climbed into the back, and pretty soon, Watari started driving. The sky was still dark, so maybe Light will get some sleep. He closed his eyes and controlled his breathing, and it didn't take long for him to drift away.
He woke up to L shaking his shoulders. He pushed him off, and exited the car. Watari quickly drove off, leaving them alone at a supposedly haunted restaraunt. It seemed refined, with white lace curtains and a door with a stained glass window in the center. There was an empty, open van to their left. L pulled him towards the van.
"Ryuzaki, what's in there?"
"The supplies left by the ghost hunting company." As they entered, the flourescent lights burned Light's eyes. Looking around, he saw four broken screens, a monitor, a book on th floor, and various bits of technology on the wall. Light reached for the book first. It was a handbook for ghost hunting. He scoffed and put it down.
"Ryuzaki, you don't really think this is real, do you?"
"I do. The restaraunt has been shut down for days, and the owners have lost a lot of profit. They wouldn't close for no reason." He headed towards the monitor. Turning it on, he got some pretty good footage of the inside. Light turned his head just in time to see a door open. L grabbed a flashlight, UV light, and spirit box while handing Light a flashlight, EMF reader, and a camera.
Before Light even had a chance to put anything in his pockets, L dragged him inside. Upon further inspection, the stained glass window was a raven. How fitting. The sun was beginning to rise, casting a dark red light onto the restaraunt. This had to be a bad omen of sorts. The door made a sound like a crying pigeon, and then they were in.
"Take out the EMF reader." L told Light. Looking at it closely, it was nearly broken. It barely glowed, and only two screws remained. Light reached for the light switch, and switched it, but nothing happened.
Looking for a ghost in a restaraunt with no power handcuffed to the detective investigating him after about two hours of sleep. The ideal start to your day.
L dragged the half-asleep Light into the kitchen. The EMF reader ticked up to a 1 for less than a second, before disappearing. The metal doors behind them rushed open, swinging back and forth until they were out of momentum. The EMF only went up to a 4. L turned the UV light on and pointed it towards the door. (Not without shining it into Light's eyes, of course.)
Two slime green handprints glowed in the purple light. One had six fingers. L took out the handbook (which Light didn't realize he had,) and flipped to the perfect page and read it out loud.
"Obake are terrifying shape shifters capable of many forms. They have been seen taking on humanoid shapes to attract their prey. Their evidences are EMF level 5, fingerprints, and ghost orbs." L dug into Light's pockets, not even asking, and took out the camera.
Three things went through Light's mind.
-
None of that made any sense.
-
Ghosts are real.
-
I am the ghost's prey.
L let out a simple "Hm," and gave Light the camera. Looking into it, he saw multiple floating orbs. Presumably the ghost orbs.
"The ghost is an Obake."
"So, can we go now?"
"No, we need to interrogate it."
Light headed towards the tables. Each table was still covered, ready for customers. The only thing the place really needed was some dusting before serving customers. And some air conditioning. It was freezing, so cold that you could convince him it was snowing outside.
"Ryuzaki, where are we headed?"
"I'm looking for an Ouija board."
While L dragged him from room to room, Light thought about what this will even do. You can't exactly have a dead person as a witness in court. And, how would this be explained? "Sorry guys, Light and I were gone because we were ghost hunting to get a testimony from a dead person."
After visiting every room, they found the Ouija board in the staff room. Luckily, it was right next to the breaker. Light switched it on, and the restaraunt's blinding lights were welcome. L set the board onto the floor. He put his hand onto the planchette, and motioned for Light to do the same.
"What is your name?" Light asked. L flipped through the handbook.
D…A…M…I…E…N…D…O…T…B…U…R…G…
"How old are you?"
6…4…
"That matches up, right, Ryuzaki?"
L was looking at a sticky note. One with terrible handwriting, that said 'DO NOT ASK THE OUIJA BOARD TO PLAY HIDE AND SEEK'.
L opened his mouth, and the only thing he could say was: "Let's play hi-" before Light covered his mouth. He pushed Light's hand off. "Did you see anything before you died?"
The planchette flew into L's face and broke. "So, I guess we won't get any more information," he said. "Light, let's head back." He put the board back onto the shelf.
"But we came this far!" L was already walking away, and Light had to follow. They were just talking to a dead person, and were going to leave?
"It broke the planchette. It won't answer our questions, and we cant torture the ghost." (Of course that's L's first thought… 'But we can't torture him…') The lights flickered, as if the ghost was appaled by the suggestion of torture, and threatening them for mentioning it.
"We could use the spirit box to ask him questions?"
"It won't work. Obakes don't respond to that."
"We could try?"
"Alright then."
They were standing near a table, and Light took out the box. A simple "Hello?" was all it took before the door slammed closed, curtains were drawn, and the ghost manifested. Light was the first to run.
L and Light sprinted down the hall, nearly running past a broom closet before L dragged both of them in. Light was still holding the spirit box. L grabbed it from his hands and threw it like it was a javelin,
