Chapter 1: Chapter 1

Chapter Text

It’s senior year of high school, and you haven’t talked to Joan for two weeks.

You and she were getting along fine until her boyfriend, Abe, started casually hitting on you at one of Gandhi’s parties. She saw this and thought you were going along with it, even though you’re way over that asshole.

As a matter of fact, you’ve been over him— and JFK. You both decided you guys were better off as friends, and you’re fine with that; the real trouble is who you’ve actually been crushing on.

Your best friend, Joan of Arc.

You haven’t told anyone yet, because to be honest, you’ve only known this about yourself for a couple of weeks. It started when you were both lying in bed, just talking, and she offhandedly mentioned that she liked girls.

“Wait, you can do that?”

“Do what?”

“I mean, you’re not worried that this would dishonor the original Joan of Arc?”

“I mean, she’s dead, and the times are changing.” “Why should we base our whole lives on people that already lived theirs?”

You can still remember how she gingerly placed her hands on yours as she said that. How she scooted ever so closer to you, how soft and cute her lips looked in that moment. How your faces were what seemed like millimeters away….

“WHAM!!”

In barged JFK.

You and Joan immediately separated from your previous position; JFK paid it no mind. He never really paid attention to things like that.

“Hey Cleo, Joan. Are you broads ready to go to Gandhi’s party?”

God. Why’d he have to arrive then? Why’d he have to ruin such a perfect moment? You were so close. So close to her.

But it doesn’t matter how close you were to her then, because now she hates you. She hates you because Abe is such a goddamned idiot. She hates you, and you won’t ever get to tell her how you actually feel, tell her that you’re in love with her…
