Chapter Text
Seonghwa’s father died on the first snowfall of the year. Just as he had turned sixteen and a whole year before he remarried the evil woman known as his stepmother, along with two step-siblings, a brother and a sister, who were around his age as well. The past year was a battle dealing with their cruel comments and side eyes but he could deal with it, as long as his father was by his side.
The second he died, he felt like he had lost everything. Not only was his father gone, but the cruel stepmother put it upon herself to make sure Seonghwa knew his place. She would take care of him but at the simple cost of him being a servant in what was his home, which had become their home. He had no other choice as he still wasn’t old enough to be on his own. So, he put up with it, hoping he would be out by his eighteenth birthday.
That didn’t work, and years passed.
He began to lose any hope that he could make it out of that home, though he still dreamed of being free, of not having to listen to the nagging cries of his bratty step-siblings and the scolding of his harsh step-mother.
One day, but not today.
He groaned when someone shook his shoulder while he tried to sleep. He rolled over, and when he didn’t wake up, he was shaken again. He opened his eyes and looked at the culprit that had woken him up. “You'd better get up, you know she doesn’t like it when you sleep in.”
It was a maid he worked with, Eunji. She was in charge of everything and when Seonghwa was ostracized by them, she made sure to take extra care of him. She knew there was more to the mistress’s story than what she told Seonghwa, but there was no way to prove it. Who would listen to a maid over a lady?
Seonghwa groaned before he hopped out of his bed. “I swear they will have me die from exhaustion before I can even get a chance to get out of here.” He grumbled as he moved to his rundown closet in the sad excuse of a room he had.
“One day, young master.” She said it, and every time he heard that name he would always freeze. She was the only one to call him that now, so each time he heard it, it felt more and more unreal.
“I’ll be ready in time, thank you, Eunji.”
She nodded to him before leaving him alone to get dressed. The old clock in his room told him he had only so much time before he had to give his step-siblings and step-mother their breakfast. He sighed before he quickly got dressed and ran out to do his chores before their loud and annoying voices would scold him.

Thankfully, he had made it just in time when their breakfast was being prepared to be served. He had hurried to stand next to a couple of the servants with trays in their hands. “You almost missed it, you know what she would do if you were late.” A male servant, Hyunwoo, had said before they moved to the dining room.
“Trust me, I already got the lecture from Eunji, I am here though.” He then approached the doors and opened them, allowing the servants to walk in with the food. At the dining table, three figures stood: his step-siblings and his step-mother. He watched as his step-sister and brother couldn’t care less as their food was placed in front of them but he noticed the stern gaze from his step-mother. Cold and calculating as if she had tried to find any flaw in his appearance or his presentation. Most of the time, she found something and he would always get more chores because of it.
Once the food was placed down, the other servants walked away as Seonghwa moved to pour the tea for them. “Good morning, step-mother.” He greeted pouring the tea for her. Her stern gaze assessed him before she nodded. He hoped, maybe, she would drop it and he could move on, no problem. He turned with the kettle and moved to his step-sister next. “Good morning, Seoyun…”
She barely spared him a glance before he moved to his brother. “Good morning, Hyeojun.”
Right after he finished, his step-mother spoke up.
“Seonghwa, why do you look so rough this morning?” She asked
He resisted the urge to groan.
“Rough?” He asked.
“Your clothes are hardly straight, your hair isn’t tidy and you look like you ran around this morning. Did you sleep in again?”
“No ma’am, the chores just took longer than anticipated.” He said calmly. He of course lied and her sharp eyes analyzed him for a moment. He could see Eunji and Hyunwoo behind him, nervous looks deep on their faces.
“Are you complaining about the chores I am giving you? Because I think I have provided a fair amount for you to stay here for free.” She said it in a sharp and harsh tone. Seonghwa was so close to losing it, he knew she was baiting him though, so he kept his cool.
“Of course not, ma’am. I am very grateful for all that you’ve done for me.”
The evil glint in her eye made his heart sink into his gut, he knew she had begun to plot an evil idea. “Well, that’s good. I suppose it wouldn’t be an issue if I added one more to your list for today.”
She took her tea and stirred in some sugar for a moment, Seonghwa would say something but he knew better to argue. “All of my shoes will need to be polished, so will Seoyun’s. Make sure you do every single pair today. Then when you are done with that, you can do your normal chores…”
Seonghwa wanted to argue, because how did she expect him to do all of their shoes and his chores in one day. Instead he politely spoke up. “Ma’am, that is over fifty pairs of shoes. Each—”
“Then you better get started.” She said sharply.
Her gaze alone caused Seonghwa to shut up. With a moment of regretting his life and wanting to leave this home he hesitantly dipped his head, before he turned to leave. He knew today was going to be one of those days.

“Father, a ball? Tonight?”
The king looked at his son and nodded. The look on his face was telling him how he felt about the idea. He didn’t care, it was clear. “Yes. You will be there tonight.”
“You know this is all sort of unexpected, how do you expect me to drop any plans I have to go to a ball.” The boy said casually as he leaned back in his chair.
“This has been planned for weeks now, Hongjoong, if you attended a meeting or two you would know that. Although your brother was supposed to catch you up…” He said, shooting a look at the other prince who suddenly raised his hands in innocence.
“I tried! He doesn’t listen.” Bumjoong said
Hongjoong rolled his eyes as he pressed his head against his fist. He looked uninterested in it all and it caused the king to let out a defeated sigh. “Son, I’ve tried to be reasonable with you but you’re almost twenty now. Bumjoong may be the next crown prince but you’re still royalty. Tonight is important because… I want you to find someone.”
There it was again, it made Hongjoong’s blood boil. He was a free spirit who felt no need to dive deep into romance. Bumjoong was already married and promised the throne, so why should he even bother finding someone. He was still so young. “Father.” He began to argue however a hand came up, silencing him.
“I don’t want to hear any arguments, you will find someone tonight or your mother and I will find someone for you.” He said sternly.
Hongjoong gave up and watched as the king walked out of the room. The room was tense and silent with the remaining two, two brothers who were just scolded by their father. Eventually, Bumjoong took a few tentative steps forward and patted his brother’s shoulder. Hongjoong barely spared him a glance. “Come on, we’re due for some fittings.”
Hongjoong didn’t want to, he didn’t want all of this just to find him a partner. He was only nineteen and now his father was insisting he settle down, he still had so much ahead of him. He knew he wouldn’t have much of a choice, being royal blood this was part of the job. So eventually, he stood up and his brother reached out and wrapped an arm around his shoulder.
“Cheer up little brother, it may seem bad now but just think about how nice it’ll be to wake up next to someone each morning. To kiss someone that you deeply love. To spend forever with someone.” Bumjoong said, leading him out of the room.
Hongjoong shot him a look. “I like having my own bed, kissing people doesn’t sound pleasant, and I’ll have forever but I’m not even twenty yet. Why can’t I have a couple more years?”
Bumjoong sighed as he gave his younger brother a sympathetic look. If anyone understood Hongjoong’s pain, it was him. “You just need to understand, you’re not a kid anymore. At least not in the eyes of royalty. At least see if someone tonight catches your eye, and if you really can’t… I’ll see if I can convince our father to hold off. You have to try though.”
That caused Hongjoong to freeze and look at the other in shock. He and his brother were close and he was glad to have at least that, because lord knows where he’d be if he didn’t have the support of his hyung. A smile appeared on his face before he nodded.
“Deal.”

There were times when Seonghwa was glad they lived in a big and spacious house. When his step-mother and step-siblings were out of sight, he would definitely say a few chosen words about them. He wouldn’t dare say it loud enough to echo but he always got away with a mutter under his breath or two.
And that was what he was currently doing as he scrubbed at the shoes he needed to clean. The endless piles of shoes surrounded him as he did so. His back hunched as he made sure those shoes were spotless, if they weren’t, he would never hear the end of it. He was already behind on his chores, he didn’t want more issues piled on.
He was near the front entrance, so when he heard a knock at the door, he let out a sigh as he finally straightened from the shoe he was working on. His back relieved and popped in a few places before he stood up. The other maids and servants would worry about making lunch, so he knew he had to answer the door even though it would slow down his cleaning.
He brushed his hands off on his clothes before he answered the door. He froze when a palace official stood there. Palace officials were rarely out and about, unless it was something serious. “Good morning. This is the home of Park Seongho, correct? The King is inviting all noble families tonight to a ball.”
That caused Seonghwa’s heart to stutter, it was his father’s name. “Yes sir.”
The official nodded before handing forward the parchment. “Very well, hand this to the lady or lord of the house.”
Of course he wouldn’t be receiving this invitation, he was a servant. That was all anyone would view him as. So he nodded and as soon as the door closed he let out a sigh. He missed going to balls, his father would always take him to enjoy it before it got too late. The extravagant clothes, the music, the company, it was all so fun. He looked down at the invitation in hand and he nibbled on his bottom lip.
Maybe he could go, just one night.
It was a lot to ask but he’s always done whatever his step mother has asked. He thought maybe, just maybe he could ask to go. So with that courage and bravery built up, he moved to go find them, they would be found in the parlour. As soon as he entered his step-mother’s sharp gaze met him. “I hope you’re not already done with those shoes, I want them properly cleaned.”
“No, of course not. I came to let you know palace officials stopped by.” He began, everyone’s attention was on him then. He walked forward and handed the invitation to his step-mother. His two step-siblings hurried over in curiosity when they saw the paper handed over.
“Mother, what is it?” Seoyun asked.
“It must mean we’re important if it’s from the palace!” Hyeojun said.
She shot her two children a stern gaze, telling them to calm themselves. When she reviewed the letter her eyes widened, a hand instinctively went to the locker around her neck in shock. “A masquerade ball. Tonight. All noble families are invited.”
“A masquerade ball?!” Hyeojun exclaimed.
“Tonight! Oh no, I have to start planning my gown.” Seoyun exclaimed. She ran off and her brother followed immediately. When Seonghwa saw it was just them two, he knew that now was his chance. So, as he watched her stand, he spoke up.
“Ma’am?” Her sharp glare met him and he almost didn’t ask, almost accepting his fate. He stood his ground though, he couldn’t just not ask. “I was wondering, if maybe I could…come along, tonight.”
She stared at him incredulously for a moment, then her face twisted into amusement. She cackled at his request and he immediately shrunk back. “Seonghwa, what makes you think you’re invited to this? It said noble families only.”
“Well it’s a masquerade ball… so I thought…”
“Exactly. You thought. However, if I bring a servant to a royal masquerade ball, people would notice. We’d be the laughing stock of the evening. Maybe even for longer after that.” She said her voice was laced with venom. A moment’s pause led to a smirk on the lady’s face. “However, I suppose I can maybe consider it if all your chores are finished. Every. Single. One.”
Seonghwa’s gaze immediately snapped to hers. Was she actually considering this? Hope suddenly bloomed in his chest. “Oh, okay! I’ll get them done.”
“No rushing them either.” She scolded. Her gaze looked him up and down. “Also if you can find something suitable to wear, only then I’ll allow you to go. I’m serious about that. If it’s embarrassing, I won’t allow it.”
Seonghwa had to resist the big eager grin on his face. He nodded to her immediately and gave her a short bow. “Of course, I’ll get started right away.”
He turned to leave but she spoke up. “Seonghwa, we leave at six pm.”
He nodded and left her alone to stare the way he left. She crossed her arms as the servant in the room approached her. “Ma’am, are we to respond with four guests then?”
Silently her gaze went to the clock, it was already almost lunch time. She only said what she said knowing Seonghwa would fail. So she turned to the servant and shook her head. “No. He won’t get his chores done in time. Make sure to add on Hyeojun’s shoes as well.”
The servant nodded and left to add on more work to Seonghwa’s list.

A bored sigh was let out as Hongjoong held out his arms while the tailor took the measurements. His brother watched, an amused smirk on his face and arms crossed. As soon as the tailor finished he brought over the suit. “Your highness, this would go easier if you stopped slouching.” The older man advised.
Hongjoong resisted the urge to make a look of annoyance or disinterest before he stood straight. The tailor muttered a thank you as he continued his work on the suit itself. The suit that was chosen for him was a dark blue suit. One to match the rest of his family. As this ball was for him though, even though he wished it wasn’t, his suit would be fancier.
The fitting of the suit was slim fit but not skin tight, just enough to show his figure. An outer layer would be added on, it would be almost like a cape and would flow with every step he took. Gold decorated the clothing as an accent and it made the fit pop out just the slightest bit more.
He looked at himself in the mirror and he knew this would definitely have all eligible ladies swooning. Some would be excited about that but the attention on him was the last thing he wanted. Especially if a decision would have to be made tonight, it brought him a lot of pressure.
Bumjoong could sense the stress on his face, so, as the older brother, he pushed himself off the wall and approached Hongjoong. “Do you mind giving us a moment?” He asked the tailor.
The older man looked between the two and gave a simple nod. “Very well, I’ll be in the hallway if you need me.”
Once he left, Bumjoong grabbed his younger brother’s arm and had him step down so he could be eye level with him. “You know, I also felt the same way you did. When they held that ball a few years ago, the pressure to meet someone stressed me out a little.”
“You? Stressed out? Crazy.” Hongjoong said with a huff. The older prince had a tendency to be more calm and poised than Hongjoong was. He remembered one time they had a noble family over and when they walked in, Bumjoong looked put together, whileHongjoong had almost tripped, worried about his appearance. His father just gave them a lecture about how important that dinner was.
“I know it’s crazy.” He said with a smirk on his face before he reached out and smoothed out some of the clothes he was wearing. “However, despite my hatred for the whole thing, my eyes laid on someone and at that moment everything stopped. I forgot how to breathe, my heart was racing and I knew that what I was feeling when I saw her was love. That was Chaemin.”
Chaemin, his wife and the reason he smiled so brightly every day. For a moment, he wondered if maybe that would be something he would experience tonight. “Well, you got lucky.” Hongjoong said with a huff.
“Yes, but I’m telling you that you could have a chance to be just as lucky as I was, still am.” He said before he smoothed the material down on his clothes. “Remember our deal, please just try tonight.”
As much as he hated it, his hyung was right, he always was and that pissed him off. “I know.”
Bumjoong patted his shoulder before he turned to retrieve something. “All I want for you is for you to be happy and find the feeling I had.” He then turned and he showed off the two dark blue masks that they would be wearing tonight. “Besides, it’s a masquerade ball, isn't it more exciting if there’s a little bit of mystery?”
He took the one mask that was handed to him and fiddled with it for a moment. Despite his feelings, these parties did have their plus sides. This time he was hoping it would be alcohol easily accessible. So with a nod, he knew there was no backing out of this. His life could permanently change from here.
Here goes nothing.

Seonghwa knew rather quickly that his chances of going tonight were not happening. The second he had gone back to the shoes a servant had brought over even more, and when he understood what was happening, he knew his step-mother truly never gave him a chance to go. So he had accepted his fate.
By the time he had cleaned all the shoes for his step-siblings and step-mother, it was already 4 pm, so he decided to go ahead and do the rest of his chores and try not to take this thing too hard. He should have known that his chance of going would not happen. So when 6 pm came and his step-mother and siblings were getting ready to head out he kept a straight face.
His step-mother’s eyes met his and she tilted her head, almost mockingly. “Maybe next time. We will be back shortly after midnight, ready with our stuff by the time we walk through these doors.” With that, she walked out with Seoyun and Hyeojun. As soon as the door closed, Seonghwa felt a tear slip down his face, the reality of it all hit him, he’ll never have a night where he could be free.
He turned to leave, needing space to himself and ignored any sympathetic looks from Eunji and Hyunwoo. He walked out to the back garden and as soon as he sat on the bench he let out a shaky sigh and threw his face into his hands. He missed his father and even though he barely knew her he missed his mother too. He could care less for the noble life but he hated the life he lived right now.
He cried harder into his hands, tears slipping through the cracks of his fingers. His shoulders shook, he felt pathetic, crying over something so silly but he still had hoped things would be different, and that was his first mistake.
As he was crying he didn’t realize someone had sat next to him until the person spoke up. “The night sure is great tonight!” A voice said, making Seonghwa flinch and look over. It was a man, like him, he was very androgynous looking though. His soft features admired the night sky while Seonghwa stood there in shock.
He wore a baby blue suit but it was a loose fabric, thatflowed on his body perfectly. Fabric flowers of the same color flowed down from the collar all the way down to his pant legs. White heeled boots peeked out from the pant leg and Seonghwa was impressed by the inches. His leg was crossed properly over his other one as he balanced himself on his hand. Eventually, he looked over and he raised his eyebrows. “What?”
“Who are you!?” Seonghwa asked, perplexed why the other was so casual.
“Oh!” The other exclaimed before he stood up. “Silly me, I forgot to do my introduction. The sky was so pretty I got distracted.”
He cleared his throat then. “I am your fairy godmother! Or well in this sense I guess I would be your fairy godfather but gender is irrelevant with magic. It doesn’t matter though, if it’s easier you can just call me Jeonghan” He said waving it off.
“What? Magic? Magic isn’t real.”
Jeonghan looked at him with an eyebrow raised. “You really think so? What if I…” He paused and when he snapped his finger a bright wand appeared out of nowhere in his hand. Seonghwa's eyes widened in shock. “Did this?”
“Okay, maybe it is real. But what does that have to do with me?” He asked.
Jeonghan tilted his head in confusion. “Did you not want to go to that ball?” He asked.
“Oh. I mean of course but—”
“No buts! You will be going! We’ll need to get you ready of course. No offense but I can’t have you going in that.” Jeonghan said, waving at all of him. Seonghwa blinked and looked down at himself before he could argue again. “Now! Let’s get you a carriage.”
“Jeonghan… I’m not supposed to be going to this.” Seonghwa finally spoke up.
“Says who?” Jeonghan asked with a hand on his hip.
“My step-mother.”
“Pfft.” Jeonghan waved his hands before he moved over to the garden looking for something. “I do not care about what your step-mother says. She’s nothing but a mean old lady.”
Seonghwa stood there in shock, unsure what to say, no one has ever dared to talk about her like that. So when this magical being came out of nowhere and started talking down about her, he wasn’t sure how to react.
“Ah! There is the perfect one!”
Seonghwa was about to question it but when he saw the magic wand in his hand flick around, suddenly one of the pumpkins from the garden started floating. With a few more flicks of the wand the pumpkin grew and grew until a beautiful carriage erupted in front of him causing him to stumble back in surprise.
Okay maybe magic is real.
“Perfect.” Jeonghan said before he tapped the wand against his face as he looked around. “You’ll need horses, how do you expect to get anywhere without those?”
“Oh we have—” Seonghwa was just about to suggest some of the horses in the stable but Jeonghan waved his wand at him.
“Aht aht… we need a special kind of horse.” He said with a mischievous glint in his eyes. Seonghwa watched as the wand flicked and did all sorts of magic then. Lights and sparkles flew around him and to the pumpkin carriage before four horses appeared out of nowhere. White coats glimmering in the light that was left from the sun going down. They almost had a faint glow to them too. They were most definitely special horses.
“One final thing.” Jeonghan said. Seonghwa expected his clothes to be next, just maybe. He wasn’t sure if the palace would take kindly to the servant rags he was wearing. “A coachman and a footman. Now, you can’t just go to a ball without them.”
“I suppose you’ll pull them out of thin air too?” Seonghwa asked.
“Oh don’t be ridiculous… you have a house full of servants.” Jeonghan said as if that was the most obvious.
“Ah, of course.” Seonghwa replied. “I don’t know if they’ll take the magic well though…”
Before either of them could say anything there was another presence and when Seonghwa looked up he saw Hyunwoo. “Hyunwoo…”
The servant boy looked at the carriage for a moment, before his eyes met Seonghwa. “Eunji was looking for you… she had a surprise for you.”
When he looked past him, he saw the older woman with something in her arms. She was just as surprised by the magic pumpkin and horses. Jeonghan signaled for him to go before he looked at Hyunwoo. “You are just the man I need…” He led him away, starting to tell him his plan.
“Eunji.” Seonghwa said softly.
The older woman met his eyes as she held out something to him then. The light blue fabric was immediately recognized as a suit. The more he looked at it he realized it was one that belonged to his father. His eyes immediately met hers then. “If anyone deserves to go to that ball tonight, it’s you. It seems your prayers have been answered too.” She mentioned, uncertainty in her eyes while looking at the pumpkin carriage.
He smiled softly. “Thank you.” He said before he pulled her into a hug.
“Put it on quick, you’ve got a ball to go to.” She said softly.
He smiled at her before he hurried inside to put it on. As he slipped on the suit and got a good look at it he got a good look at it. It was older, maybe a little outdated, but it belonged to his father. The light blue suit had darker blue embroidered flowers up and down the material. It fit him perfectly and it wasn’t super fancy but it was his. The more he wore it the more he felt his presence with him. So with a big smile he hurried back out to the garden.
“Ah you’re back!” Jeonghan exclaimed. His eyes looked the suit up and down for a moment. “Can I… make a few adjustments.”
Seonghwa blinked. “Adjustments?”
“I won’t change it completely, just something to make it… stand out!” He said, emphasizing the last part with his hands flailing.
“It belonged to my father, I just don’t want to change it too much.” He said, looking concerned.
“Just trust me on this. Just tonight.” Jeonghan insisted. Eventually, he did trust him and gave him a hesitant nod. If he could make a magical pumpkin carriage and horses out of nowhere, then he could trust him to not ruin his father’s suit.
Jeonghan stepped back and with a wave or two of his wand, the same lights and sparkles came to him. They immediately wrapped around his body and he watched in awe as adjustments appeared on his suit. He watched as gems and other sparkly things were suddenly attached. A sheer light blue fabric attached to his back, appearing almost as a cape. His shoes became more expensive looking and a bright pair of white gloves settled on his hands immediately.
He spinned to look at himself and the sheer fabric flowed beautifully when he did that. He truly felt like a noble again, after years of being forced to be less. “Oh, it’s perfect.” He said with a wide grin.
“One more thing.” Jeonghan advised as he stepped closer. The wand pointed at his face and Seonghwa blinked out of uncertainty what he planned on doing. The wand was a mere few inches a way before he jumped at another flick. The mask to complete the look was on his face then. He immediately turned to any nearby reflection and when he saw the silver and intricate mask on his face he couldn’t believe it.
“Now you’re ready.” He said. They both looked over when Hyunwoo came running out with another servant. “And just in time. Get in position boys!” He scolded the two. Seonghwa couldn’t help the small giggle as they scurried into place. Jeonghan waited and when they were by the carriage he flicked his wand one more time. They both had a light blue suit and masks as well.
“Now, hurry off before it gets too late. Just remember though, at the stroke of twelve, all of this will go away. I can’t contain my magic that long. So make sure you’re back here before then.” He said.
Eunji, who had been watching this the whole time, stepped forward. “Your step-mother will be back then too, I can only do so much Seonghwa, don’t get carried away.”
He nodded to both of them. A hug to Eunji before he immediately turned to Jeonghan and he surprised the magical being with a hug as well. “Thank you both! So much!”
He hurried into the carriage then and as soon as he was settled he waved one last goodbye, leaving the two of them there waving back until the carriage was gone. Eunji sighed before she turned to Jeonghan. “Doesn’t he remind you of his mother?”
Jeonghan nodded, a fond smile on his face. “She had the same exact look of glee on her face when I sent her to the ball where she met his father. Let’s hope this gives him a similar opportunity.”
“I hope. He deserves it.”

They were barely an hour in and Hongjoong wanted nothing more but to get out of this dreaded party. He had bowed to way too many guests, smiled to the point of his face hurting and frankly, there wasn’t enough alcohol at this party to keep him sane, he wondered how Bumjoong was so good at doing this.
He finished talking to a lady and her daughter and as soon as he turned away, making it obvious he wasn’t interested, his face dropped immediately and that was when he began to look around for some kind of exit. His father must have known he would, because every possible exit had a guard or a servant in place.
He snatched a glass off a servant's tray of more alcohol before he went somewhere to hide. As he did, he was stopped by another lady and what seemed to be her two children. He resisted the urge to sigh and bowed respectively to the lady. “Good evening.” He said.
“Good evening, we just wanted to thank you for such a wonderful party…” She had begun to go off about how grateful she was and everything and as he was attempting to listen, someone behind her caused him to look over. Something clicked, something he’s never felt before as he stared at another person.
Hongjoong didn’t even let the lady finish, he carefully held his hand up to stop her. “Will you excuse me?” He said without giving her a moment to agree. He couldn't care about the annoyed look on her face as he walked past to approach the person who caught his eye.
The boy wore the most delicate looking suit. He was looking up in awe at the chandelier above him, that was sparkling as much as his own eyes. The mask he wore was silver, fitting his face so perfectly. Intricate details filled the mask itself. Despite not being able to see his face entirely, Hongjoong knew there was something about this boy and suddenly the urge to leave had vanished. He remembered Bumjoong’s words about falling in love and he swore that was what he felt at that moment.
As he approached him the other felt his presence and immediately met his gaze. His round eyes were cautious when the other stood in front of him. Hongjoong knew he would flee if he said something wrong, so he played it safe. “Good evening.” He said bowing to him.
The boy eyed him with uncertainty before he bowed back. “Good evening.” He replied back. His voice was a slightly deep tone and smooth like honey. He wanted to know more.
“You seem interested in the chandelier.” He said casually before he glanced up at it.
“I’ve never seen something so… intricately made before.” He had admitted.
“It’s my family’s greatest treasure. Been in the castle for generations, it’s truly a staple centerpiece for the ballroom.” He said.
The boy blinked in surprise. “Family?” He asked softly.
“Yes.” Hongjoong said, worried maybe his status as the prince would ruin their chance. He remained calm though. “I am Prince Hongjoong.”
The boy stared at him for a moment, eyeing him up and down. He had expected him to run or even worse, try to only fall in love because of his status. Instead a coy smile appeared on his face. “Aren’t masquerade balls supposed to keep our identities hidden?” He asked.
“Well, I suppose you should question my father on his decisions.” He said back, a small smirk growing on his face. The boy smiled back at him as well, clearly enjoying their banter. As a song came up, they both glanced around as people began to partner up. A dance would start and Hongjoong didn’t want the risk of the two separating. So he held out his hand and when the boy looked over, shock on his face. “What is it?”
He looked nervous all of a sudden and for a moment he hesitated even saying the next words. “I just don’t dance…”
“You’re at a ball and you don’t dance? May I ask why?” Hongjoong inquired.
“It’s not me, I guess. It’s just…” He hesitated, eyes still lingering on Hongjoong’s extended hand. “No one’s really asked me to dance before…”
Hongjoong smiled softly at the other, pushing his hand towards him again. “Will you allow me to be the first?”
The other seemed shocked but a small grin came on his face. Finally the gloved hand went to his and Hongjoong pulled him to the floor. When they got into position, there was a nervous look in the other’s eye. So Hongjoong, who had been trained for this all his life, helped him. Their closeness was sudden and when Hongjoong gently placed his hand on his waist, a flushed red peeked out of his mask. “Follow my lead.”
He nodded and that was when Hongjoong moved. There were some awkward attempts from the other but eventually he had it down. He was a natural, despite what he thought. Eventually, his eyes met his again, and Hongjoong had to resist letting out a noise of surprise. He was stunning but up close like this? Hongjoong knew the feeling in his heart was him falling.
They danced to the rest of the song and as soon as it finished, they both looked disappointed. So Hongjoong immediately looked around and an idea came to his head. His hand grabbed the other’s before he hurried him away. He wanted more time with him, especially when he saw all the hungry eyes of other ladies wanting to dance.
“Where are we going?” The boy asked in shock, trying to keep up with him.
“Just trust me on this.” He said with a smirk back at the other. Although he seemed unsure, he returned the look with a grin of his own as they hurried off to the spot Hongjoong where knew they would have time for themselves.

Seonghwa wasn’t sure how he got there. He remembered getting to the ball, a little later than when it was supposed to start and walked in. He remembered standing around awkwardly and admiring the party from the sidelines. He, especially, remembered when a light flickered on him and when he looked up, he saw the prettiest chandelier he’s ever laid his eyes on.
Then the prince himself joined him.
Now they were hurrying through the gardens in the back of the castle, going wherever this prince was planning on taking him. Eventually, as they ran through the gardens, he was brought to a specific area hidden by a bunch of trees. When Hongjoong led him through he stopped in shock, seeing the beautifully crafted fountain. Surrounding it was a landscaping out of a dream. He could cry with how beautiful it is.
He walked forward with Hongjoong right behind him and as he stared in admiration at the fountain, Hongjoong lingered behind him. He could feel his gaze on him and eventually he turned to him, his eyes met his. “You have a beautiful garden.” He said eventually, to cut the quiet tension.
Hongjoong smiled. “From chandeliers to gardens, we take really good care of our space.”
He chuckled. “I can see that.” He said before he carefully took a seat on the edge of the fountain. Hongjoong hesitated but eventually sat next to him, to enjoy the night.
“Since you know who I am, will you tell me your name?” Hongjoong asked after a moment of silence. Seonghwa’s heart raced before he looked over. The purpose of tonight was to remain anonymous but everything changed when the prince approached him. “It would make my life so much easier if I knew, otherwise, I would just keep thinking of you as the mystery boy.”
Seonghwa let out a chuckle, bordering on the edge of nervousness. “Well, your highness, I fully believe in anonymity with a masquerade ball.” He said with a teasing look. He then sighed as he looked up at the night sky. The bright red dot in the sky that could be mistaken as a star caught his eye and an idea came to his mind. “However, if you must call me something, you can call me Mars.”
Hongjoong tilted his head. “Mars? That’s such a unique nickname.”
“My mother used to call me that a bunch as a kid.” He said softly. He stared off in reminiscence before he turned his attention to Hongjoong. “So you can call me that if you must.”
Hongjoong nodded. “I would like to meet her.”
Seonghwa’s heart clenched. “Oh… she died when I was young.”
Guilt washed across Hongjoong’s face. “Oh, I’m sorry. Your father surely must be here.”
“No. He’s gone too…” Seonghwa said. The guilt grew in Hongjoong’s face, so Seonghwa shook his head. “It’s okay. I’ve grieved them both.”
“Do you have any family here?” He asked curiously.
The more Hongjoong asked questions, the more nervous Seonghwa got. He knew if he kept moving forward with this conversation his cover could be blown. “I came alone.” He said with a shrug before he stood. He could feel Hongjoong immediately standing up and following him. “Shall we explore more of your gardens during this beautiful night?”
Hongjoong was surprised, especially when Seonghwa turned to him. The look in Hongjoong’s eyes told him enough about how enamored he was with him. The prince nodded though and they moved to walk through the gardens.
Despite the fear of having Hongjoong find out who he truly was, he was having a wonderful time. He truly lost track of time as they talked for hours and he laughed so hard for the first time in years. Hongjoong was a treasure to him, making him feel things he’s never felt before.
He found out more about the prince, how he’s got his older brother and how he never wanted a ball. Hongjoong sounded reckless but in a way that intrigued Seonghwa. He wasn’t a criminal but he almost wanted to be free and do whatever. He would tell him how much he related but he could only go so far and not expose that he was nothing but a servant.
They ended up back at the fountain after the walk and there was something in the air between them. Hongjoong looked at Seonghwa as if he wanted to do something that made Seonghwa’s heart race. Especially when the other glanced down at his lips, the look being hard to miss with how obvious it was. He stepped closer and Hongjoong instinctively leaned closer too, he wanted to kiss him too. Especially with how great of a night they had. So they neared closer and closer until the chiming of the clock caused Seonghwa to stiffen.
Midnight.
He stepped back and looked around, trying to remember his path back to the castle. Hongjoong sensed his distress and took his hand. Seonghwa snapped his gaze to him and he shook his head. “I’m sorry, I have to go…”
“Go? What’s the rush?”
“I’m sorry, I-I have to—”
He had to run before time would run out. He turned and before Hongjoong could say anything he was running. He could hear him calling his name in the distance and him following him. He kept running though, unsure what would happen if he waited to hear the last toll of the bell.
He made it back to the castle breathless and he hurried past all the people standing in his way. He apologized each time as he bumped into each of them, as he turned the corner he ran harshly into a figure. He stumbled back almost falling on his feet. “Watch where you’re going.”
A familiar voice caused his blood to run cold, he barely spared a glance and muttered an apology. His step-mother burned holes into him without knowing who he was. He kept running though, heart racing out of his chest. He had a wonderful night, the best honestly. But he would have to accept never seeing the beautiful prince again.
As he hurried out to his carriage with Hyunwoo hurrying him, he had officially accepted it. Maybe if it was meant to be, he would see him again some day.

Hongjoong was exhausted by the end of the night. Even more defeated when he lost Mars in the crowd. He tried to catch up and figure out what was wrong but he had already vanished into thin air. He had begun to wonder if maybe he imagined the wonderful night he had but it felt too real. He held onto that last sliver of hope.
He had seated himself on the grand staircase while the ballroom had been cleaned. His mask was removed from his face, twirling it around with his fingers. No matter how hard he tried he couldn’t get the other’s face out of his mind or at least what he could see. His lips, part of his nose, and the part he adored most, his twinkling eyes. They would haunt him, it seemed.
He heard footsteps approach him and when he looked up to see his brother he sighed and threw his face in his hands. He remembered Bumjoong supporting him from the side when the two danced, giving him a thumbs up in approval. So he knew he would ask what happened. Instead he sat next to him and his presence was calming enough.
So Hongjoong explained at his own pace. “We snuck out to talk to each other. God he’s stunning Bumjoong, I don’t care if he wore a mask, I could tell. Everything was going great until it hit midnight and he just ran out of here. I was close to kissing him too…”
His hyung was silent, thinking about what to say next because this situation was truly tricky. A hand clapped him on the back then and when Hongjoong looked over a warm smile was on his brother’s face. “Did you get that feeling? The feeling I told you about?”
Hongjoong blinked, he remembered when he first laid his eyes on Mars and how it made his heart stutter and his whole world shift. “Yes.”
Bumjoong nodded. “Then it’s settled, we’ll find this mystery boy.” He stood then, which resulted in Hongjoong hurrying to do the same.
“Find him? How? There’s truly a hundred noble families in this kingdom, besides he told me he doesn’t have his parents and he came alone. I don’t even know where to look from there.” Hongjoong asked.
“Well, we know he’s male, so that’ll slim it down tremendously. We will just announce that you are looking for the mystery boy. If this is meant to be, then he will show up. We can start immediately, I’ll get some guards ready.”
“No. Not tonight, everyone is worn out.” Hongjoong said before he let out a sigh. His brother had given him more hope then. Just enough to make his broken heart slowly begin to mend. He looked at his hyung. “Tomorrow morning, I shall set off and look. Send out a notice to all noble families, no, to all families. I know I won’t find him just with the nobility.”
There was something different about this mystery boy. He didn’t care who he was, whether he was nobility or not, he would find him. Bumjoong smiled at him and gave a nod, glad to see his brother taking action.
“We’ll start the search in the morning.”
He nodded and then he felt exhaustion wash over him again. So he dismissed himself from the conversation with a comment about how he’ll see him in the morning. He needed to go rest, tomorrow would be a long day and he would be meeting a lot of families. He knew there was also the chance of it being more than a day, this could take weeks, maybe months.
He would find this mystery boy and he would choose him.

Seonghwa had just made it home before the stuff that was made with magic disappeared. He watched with a saddened expression when they slowly vanished, he would have to mourn the night later. His step-mother and step-siblings would be home shortly. So he ran in, Hyunwoo and the other servant behind him.
Eunji met them inside and immediately helped him switch out the suit for his regular clothes. As he was pulling on his shirt he was surprised when the mask he wore caught onto the fabric. He paused before he removed the mask and looked it over. Why didn’t this disappear as well? “Seonghwa!” Eunji scolded him. They didn’t have lots of time.
“Sorry.” He muttered as he finished getting dressed. She hurried over and when she saw the mask as well she blinked in surprise. Gently she took the folded suit and the mask.
“I’ll put this somewhere safe. Right now you need to worry about your step-mother and step-siblings. The tea is ready in the parlour waiting for them.” She said before she eyed him for a moment. She straightened up his clothes and smoothed down his hair. “There, now hurry.”
He nodded and gave her a smile before he moved to the main entrance. Just as he stood in position the door opened and he could immediately feel harsh and judgmental stares on him. He was used to faking his mood around them and with a bow they accepted his lie. “Welcome back, did you guys have a good night?” He said as he approached them, taking any coats or things to hang up.
“Yes, thank you.” His step-mother said in a short tone.
“Mother, I didn't have a good time! We couldn’t even properly interact with the prince! He ran away with some man!” Seoyun whined.
“The way they danced with each other too, we were doomed from the start.” Hyeojun joined in.
Seonghwa spoke up then. “I will put these away, your tea is in the parlour.” He said simply before he dismissed himself while they continued whining. His step-mother watched him carefully though, he could feel her cold and calculating eyes on him. He had just hoped it was her normal judgemental glare.
They all had their tea and there were more complaints about the night but eventually they were all in bed. Leaving Seonghwa to finally go to his room and the second he was alone, a big grin grew on his face. His heart raced just at the thought of the night he had. The risk he took trusting Jeonghan, it all felt worth it. Then when he looked forward, the mask and his father’s suit laid in the middle of his bed. It was a reminder of the wonderful night and as he approached it, Hongjoong’s stare came into his head and his heart raced.
Oh he was doomed.
Out of all the people he could fall for at a ball it had to be the prince himself. They were so close to kissing too, just a breath away before the cruel reminder of the time. He had hoped he had more time but he was just a servant boy and he was the prince. He picked up the mask and let out a sigh, maybe some day if it were meant to be, he could see him again.
He carefully picked up the items and moved them to the chest in his room. He slid the items under an old and dusty duvet. As soon as they were tucked underneath and out of sight he closed the chest. The night was over and it was time to get back to reality. So, he changed into his night clothes and as soon as his head hit the run down pillow, exhaustion took over.
The last image he saw was the eyes of the beautiful prince he may never see again.

The announcement that the prince was looking for the mystery man he danced with at the ball had spread through the town quickly. There were many families that he would visit and each time there was nothing but disappointment as no one fit the description.
He would mention the name Mars and no one would seem to understand what he was talking about but they would laugh it off or move on. No one’s eyes sparkled like the ones he was looking for, they also didn’t resemble his eyes. They were round and expressive in their own way. Especially when he had danced with him and left little to no space between them. The last thing was that mask, the intricacy, the detail of it, it stood out. If maybe he could find the owner with that same exact mask he would know.
Despite his best efforts, two weeks have gone by since the ball and no sign of that boy. He felt like he was on the verge of a mental breakdown and ready to give up, because no matter what he did, there were always dead ends. Bumjoong accompanied him, helping him out half the time and he could see his brother slowly becoming more and more defeated. They needed a break and so Bumjoong announced one day they were going to the market.
Hongjoong just wanted to go home, being in a public space and being noticed was the last thing he wanted. He knew they’d be bringing up how their son could possibly be the mystery man from the ball. There’s been so many people insisting and every time none of them fit. It was getting on his nerves.
“Hongjoong, can you at least look like you want to have a good time?” Bumjoong said next to him in their carriage. Hongjoong’s gaze was out the window and he let out a defeated sigh.
“I told you already I didn’t want this.” He said
“I know, but some fresh air will do you some good, and who knows, maybe you’ll run into the mystery man by now.” Bumjoong said, hoping to lighten the mood.
“If he wanted to be found he would come forward by now, I’m beginning to worry there’s no point behind this.” He said.
Bumjoong sighed. “The point of all of this is to get you out of this depressive funk, if you give up on this, father has suitors lined up out the door for you. You will find him, Hongjoong. I need you to please stop doubting yourself.”
There was a tense silence between the two before Hongjoong finally looked at his brother. “You’re right and I’m sorry.”
“Of course I am, I’m the hyung.” He chuckled right as the carriage stopped. They looked up and realized they were there. Once they fully stopped they stepped out to see the bustling market alive with all sorts of people. The market was a weekly thing where people could socialize with others. It was mainly noble families, but other classes were there too.
Immediately Hongjoong was spotted and families had flocked their way over to inquire about the search. Some he recognized as they were trying to convince him that their son was the mystery boy, some even tried to gaslight him that their daughter was the one. It infuriated him especially when everyone had tried to prove him wrong.
He knew Mars. It was none of these sons or daughters.
As he backed away from one noble family, he remembered them being called the Chois, he was distracted. Trying to make up excuses about how he needed to look around the market. He turned quickly and tried to hurry away but he ran into something and shortly realized it was someone. He heard a gasp and fruits flying everywhere. Instinctively he tried to catch whoever he ran into and when he had a firm grip on them, he came face to face with a boy. A mere few inches away, he felt the air leave his lungs.
His whole world stopped.
The boy stared up at him in a mortified look, almost as if he had been exposed for something. Hongjoong knew there was something with him though. Could it be?
“Seonghwa!” A woman’s voice scolded. The boy named Seonghwa shook out of his shocked daze and immediately pushed away. “Look at this mess you caused!”
Hongjoong frowned, and observed the other scrambling to pick up the scattered fruits that went flying. He moved to help and as he grabbed a fruit the woman spoke again. “Now the prince himself is helping you with your mess… honestly boy don’t you have any—”
“Madam, it’s completely fine.” Hongjoong said. She immediately snapped her gaze over to him and then it was as if something clicked. Like the rest of the families who saw him, she took her chance as he finished picking up the rest of the fruit. He had handed the rest of the fruit to Seonghwa, who silently thanked him and stepped away.
“I hope he wasn’t too much trouble, he tends to get distracted, especially lately I’m not sure what is with him.” She said, her voice suddenly sweet. Hongjoong didn’t like it, it sounded fake and insincere. As she continued, he knew exactly why. “If I remember correctly, you are stopping at our residence tomorrow? My son is looking forward to your arrival.”
Hongjoong glanced at Seonghwa again who stood back with his head down and before he could say anything further the son she mentioned stepped forward. His arrogant face blocking the way of the other. Once again he immediately knew it wasn’t him. He would humor them though. “Yes, of course.”
She smiled. “We are delighted to have you stop by your highness…” She said simply before her head bowed. “Come children, we are done here.”
Hongjoong watched as they walked away and made sure his eyes lingered especially on Seonghwa. He hoped his eyes would meet him, just once more so he could prove something. However, the other turned and immediately followed the Lady and her two kids.
He turned to the servant assigned to walk around with them today. “Minjae. Who is that family?”
“That is Lady Park and her two children. Lord Park owned the home originally but he died a few years ago.” The older servant advised.
He froze when he remembered the conversation he had with Mars. The mention of his father passing away seemed too coincidental. However, he remembered the way he looked at him, those eyes round in shock when they collided. It was way too similar and suddenly he had begun to feel hope again.
“Move their house visit to the morning.” He said confidently.
“Right away sir.”

The second he had run into the prince at the market, Seonghwa knew he messed up. Recognition had crossed Hongjoong’s face immediately, he knew there wasn’t any escaping this now. Not to mention his step-mother immediately knew something was up. The tension in the carriage was thick and almost suffocating during their ride home. It didn’t help that she sat across from him, her harsh gaze piercing straight through him.
When they got home he was watched like a hawk, as if she was waiting for him to slip up. Waiting for him to confess he went to the ball. He kept his lips sealed tight though. Working like he was supposed to and ignoring any harsh looks from her. Throughout the rest of the day it was hard to keep up the act but finally he was able to go to bed. There he could finally relax and loosen up.
He recalled bumping into Hongjoong at the market again and let out a conflicted sigh. He was so handsome up close but the danger behind this whole thing would always linger behind his thoughts. He could have told him, could have told him that he was Mars and had to run away because he snuck away to a ball and had a magical blessing that would fade away. He didn’t though. Worried that the other might think of him as crazy.
He groaned and shoved his face into his pillow forcing himself to go to sleep. Tomorrow he would be there to visit and see if Hyeojun or Seoyun was who he was looking for. He would just have to accept it would never work out with him. Heartbroken then, he tried to sleep.
He slept restlessly through the night, but eventually, he had to wake up to get the chores going. He noticed the servants and the staff were all running around crazily and as he helped prepare breakfast, he felt like the only one out of the loop. “What’s going on?” He asked, eventually finding Hyunwoo within the mess.
“The prince is coming. Early.” Hyunwoo said, causing Seonghwa to stiffen. “Seonghwa, this only happened after the market, don’t you think this is the perfect chance… to come forward?”
That made him think, truly think, and he wondered if maybe Hyunwoo was right. It did seem weird that he moved up his appointment but he remembered how he looked at him when they collided at the market. The realization came across his eyes but what would he do when he would know that he was a servant? “I don’t know…”
“Just think about it. This could be it.” His friend encouraged him as he picked up the tray where all the tea was stacked neatly. Seonghwa would have to think about it when the time came but for now breakfast was needed.
He moved to help but a servant approached him. “Lady Park needs to speak with you…” She said fidgeting with her hands.
“With me? I was about to bring her breakfast…”
“In your room…”
Something didn’t feel right then, especially with how nervous this servant girl was. He glanced over to Hyunwoo who looked just as nervous, but he nodded telling him he had the trays. “Very well.”
The closer he got to his room, the more worry swelled in his chest. This was so out of the blue, she never asked to speak with him unless it was something serious. He hoped it wasn’t what he was thinking it was. When he approached the door he entered carefully, his stepmother faced away from him and Seonghwa cleared his throat. “You needed to see me?”
She was silent, causing the tension to be even worse than before. Then she turned and when she revealed what she was holding in her hands, he stiffened. “I should have known. Should have seen the signs. The second I was informed by a messenger of the king that our appointment was moved up, I knew something was suspicious.”
“I-It’s not what it looks like…”
“You went to the ball… thinking you could be one of us…” Her words she spit out at him were harsh and made Seonghwa flinch. “I don’t know how many times I have to tell you, you will never be one of us. Especially with that poor woman you called your mother.”
Seonghwa’s eyes snapped to hers, his blood suddenly boiling in hatred. “You have no right—!”
A backhanded slap met him causing him to stumble away and cradle his face. The gaudy rings on her fingers didn’t help, the pain that blossomed just from those was a lot to bear. “I have been nothing but generous! I let you stay here, have a nice bed, food and water! I could have left you on the streets. You have no right.”
She glared at him then, before she sighed and looked at the mask. “It’s a shame that you thought a prince could ever love you. You truly are your mother’s child. The prince will see that Hyeojun is the mystery man, and you…” She began to step towards the door. “Will stay up here, and not mess this up.”
Seonghwa gasped in pure shock as she immediately left and slammed the door shut. Locking it so he couldn’t get out. He shook his head immediately and began pounding on the door. “Please! Let me out! Don’t do this!” He begged as tears immediately welled in his eyes. It was no use as he continued to pound the door, he was stuck there. He should have known, no matter how close he got to something great, it would always be torn away.

Hongjoong’s heart was racing out of his chest, and it got even worse the second they stopped outside of the Park residence. The carriage door opened and Hongjoong stepped out with a servant on his right hand side. He looked up before he let out a nervous sigh, if Seonghwa was truly it, his search was finally over.
They were led in by some of the estate’s servants and brought to the parlour where tea was served. Hongjoong immediately scanned the room hoping to see maybe a glimpse of the boy but he tried to hide his disappointment when he didn’t see him. He would deal with that later.
“Your highness…” Lady Park had greeted. “We’re honored to have you join us for tea.”
Hongjoong nodded simply and took a seat at the spot furthest away from the Lady’s children who sat way too straight. He blinked in confusion before he turned to the Lady. “Thank you. I would love to stay longer but I do have other appointments today.”
Lady Park hummed before she turned, when she revealed what she was grabbing Hongjoong froze. The mask that belonged to Mars or if he was right, Seonghwa. “There is no need, it seems we are the home you are looking for.” She said, something didn’t feel right and he wondered where this would go.
“I see. You’re saying one of your children was with me that night?” He asked.
“Correct.” She said confidently.
Hongjoong hummed before he turned to the two, they straightened even more when they were in his line of sight. “Can either of you tell me what the word Mars means to you?”
Confusion rippled across their faces, both of them looked as if they were trying to figure it out at that moment. The longer they took was all he needed to know. Especially when the boy spoke up. “It’s the planet next to earth!”
His unamused expression moved to the Lady then. “Unfortunately, I don’t believe your children are who I am looking for.” He said before he looked around again, no sight of Seonghwa anywhere. It seemed he once again hit another dead end, so he stood causing the lady to stand immediately,
“Your highness! You have to understand, they may be confused—”
“Forgive me, my Lady, but it seems this is just my mistake.” He said before he turned to his servant and nodded. They began to leave, the Lady behind him begging and pleading for him not to go. He didn’t listen though, already frustrated he was lied to again. These families kept thinking they could trick him. He wasn’t a fool.
As he opened the door to walk into the hallway he stopped when he saw an elderly maid with a younger male servant. One more stood behind them, out of sight. The two were scolding him about something before the prince’s presence was known and eventually he realized who was standing behind him.
When they stepped to the side, the servant from earlier stood there.
Seonghwa.
⊹ ࣪ ˖⏱ ୭˚. ᵎ
He wasn’t sure how long he cried or why he even bothered crying but Seonghwa felt like he was there for an eternity. He leaned up against the door, eyes red with tears, and occasionally reaching up to the door knob to make sure he wasn’t imagining this. Each time the door knob didn't budge, it reminded him of his fate.
His face stung, his heart ached and everything just felt like it was crumbling down at him at that moment. How could such a magical night lead to all of this heartbreak? For a second he wondered if maybe going at all was worth it. If he didn’t go he wouldn’t have this crushing feeling in his chest.
He was about to give up hope, move to his bed and curl up and cry. It sounded pathetic but there was nothing else he could do.
Until he heard rushed footsteps to his door. He immediately turned to it, hearing whispers on the other side. He recognized one voice immediately and as soon as the door opened he immediately hurried and hugged Eunji so tight. Hyunwoo stood behind her, anxious as the elder woman. She let out a surprised noise but eventually patted his back. “He’s here right now, come on…” She said after a moment.
He was about to follow but his feet remained glued to the floor. It caused Eunji to turn to him with a look of confusion. It became clear though why he looked the way he did so she walked over to him and grabbed his hands. His eyes immediately looked at her. “If anyone deserves to fall in love with this prince, it’s you.”
“But I’m a servant…”
She gave him a look, one to tell him she wasn’t going to listen to this. “You, Park Seonghwa, are the son of a nobleman. Your mother may have been a servant, but your father chose her and they fell in love despite the differences of class. Your father and your mother loved you so very much and because of that, you grew up with a heart of gold.”
He looked at her shocked at the kind words, but he still seemed so unsure by everything, so Eunji knew she needed to say something more. “I don’t know if this will encourage you or not but your father left everything in the will to you, until that greedy woman changed it all. She hired someone to make it go to her and those god awful kids of hers. Imagine the look on her face when you finally win and have your freedom…”
She was right.
Seonghwa hated how right she was. Especially since he found out how truly awful his step-mother was when he learned how greedy she had become. So, after tense silence, both Eunji and Hyunwoo standing there waiting for him to agree, he finally nodded. Eunji smiled before they ran downstairs.
His heart raced and the closer they got the more nervous he was. As soon as they arrived at the door another moment of panic surged over him. Eunji immediately turned and let out a sigh. “Dear, we’ve made it this far you might as well go through those doors.”
“He’s been looking for you this whole time Seonghwa…” Hyunwoo added.
He was preparing himself, a few seconds of mental preparation would be enough and just as he was about to agree the doors opened. He didn’t even have to look to know it was Hongjoong walking through those doors, he could hear his step-mother pleading for him to wait. It was silent right after and when Eunji and Hyunwoo stepped to the sides, Seonghwa’s gaze looked up and met with the prince.
The same eyes he felt so enamored by weeks ago.
The same eyes that haunted his dreams every night.
Seonghwa worried maybe he would see his clothing, see his true form and hurry past him. There was silence between them for a moment before Hongjoong was the first to speak and surprise him. “I’ve been looking for you…”
He blinked. “Me?”
“Mhm… you ran away before I could get a chance to ask to see you again.” He said softly before he ever so carefully stepped forward. Seonghwa wanted to run away but at the same time wanted to run towards him. His moods clashed against each other, hoping to win. “There’s only one way to confirm though.”
He turned to his servant who tagged along and nodded. The man nodded before he walked over to Seonghwa’s stepmother and plucked the mask out of her hands. Her eyes widened, shocked he would treat her in such a way. “How dare you—”
“My apologies Lady but the Prince requests it.” His tone wasn’t kind at all, but sharp instead. Leaving her to stand there mouth agape.
When Hongjoong was handed the mask, Seonghwa’s heart raced harder especially as he approached him once more and now stood right in front of him. “May I?” He asked.
Seonghwa could only silently nod, his throat felt too dry to speak. He stood still, maybe a tad too still, when he reached up and placed it on his head. As soon as it was in place, Seonghwa could see the recognition in the prince’s eyes. “Mars?” He asked.
Seonghwa’s eyes immediately snapped to him, surprised he remembered that nickname. He nibbled on his bottom lip before he nodded. Hongjoong smiled widely before he took his hands. “I found you….”
“You did…” Seonghwa managed out as he removed the mask. No more hiding behind it.
Before they could say anything further a loud and rather annoying huff came from the Lady. She stomped forward, not willing to accept this. “Your highness, you must understand, he is not of this class. My children are—”
“Oh, I remember exactly who you are.” Hongjoong’s servant said before Hongjoong could snap in retaliation. “You’re the widow of Lord Park Seongho… if I remember correctly, I remember chatting with a man in charge of his will and how the wife had paid him a large sum of money to change it…”
She paled immediately. Seonghwa already knew the news because of Eunji, it still hurt to hear it. “Th-That is a lie.” She said immediately, not sounding super convincing.
“In fact, I remember all of his assets were supposed to go to his son. I remember he said you told him all about the boy being turned into a servant…” He continued on and the Lady looked even more pale, almost the same shade as a ghost.
“I believe the home rightfully belongs to you.” He said turning to Seonghwa. Everyone’s attention suddenly turned to him and suddenly he felt smaller than he’s ever felt before. However when he met his step-mother’s hateful glare, he knew he had to be better than her at this moment.
“I don’t want it.” He said simply. It was a shock to everyone and there was muttering from a few people.
“Seonghwa…” Hongjoong started but he immediately looked at him, a way to tell him he had this.
“The home can be theirs, it really hasn’t felt like home for a long time. I’ll find a new home, with Hongjoong” He said, giving the other a smile for a moment. He then turned to his step-mother. “I have conditions though.”
Lady Park stared at him cold and unyielding before she crossed her arms. “Go on.”
“I don’t want you guys to ever reach out to me ever again. No contact whatsoever. Just because I found a better life, I’m not going to forgive you for what you’ve done.” He said firmly. He then glanced at his step-siblings, truthfully they weren’t as bad as Lady Park, they were raised to be hateful, maybe sometime he’d make amends. He would refuse to forgive a grown woman jealous of him though, especially after what she’s done.
“Also. You can keep everything but Eunji and Hyunwoo come with me. They will be by my side.” He said firmly.
She had no choice, especially when she looked at Hongjoong who was staring daggers at her. If she made bad enemies with royalty itself, it would look bad on her in society. So she scoffed. “Very well.” She then turned away storming off in obvious anger. But Seonghwa didn’t care, he knew then, he had finally won.
Within an hour things were being packed up out of the home that Seonghwa lived in. He felt weird watching people carrying his stuff out of the home, he tried to help but they turned him down. So he just stood there awkwardly watching as his new life was about to start. Then he felt a presence next to him and he looked over to see Hongjoong. His heart raced and he smiled softly.
“You know… we never really got to that kiss…” He said softly.
Seonghwa let out a huff before he turned to him. “Is this a sly way of telling me to kiss you, your majesty?”
Hongjoong smirked before he pulled him close and a hand reached up to rest on his face. “Maybe.”
Then, finally, the soft lips came in contact with him and Seonghwa smirked widely into the kiss. He wasted no time kissing him back for a moment, not caring if anyone else could see him. He pulled back first eventually, feeling like he could burst at any moment. “Not too bad your majesty…”
“Can say the same to you.”
Then they kissed again, and Seonghwa knew there would be more where that came from, and he couldn’t wait.

One Year Later…
Seonghwa felt like he was going to lose his mind.
He stood there in front of the mirror, hands clenching and unclenching at the thought of what was to come. Eunji sensed it as she adjusted his suit, making sure it fit just right. “Dear, you need to calm down.”
“How am I supposed to calm down when I’m marrying Hongjoong today!” He said. His hands trembled as well as the tone in his voice. So Eunji moved to stand in front of him and held his hands.
“Deep breaths, in and out.” They took deep breaths together and when he was calm, she moved back to where she was adjusting his suit. “You knew this day was coming since day one, so why are you nervous now?”
“I don’t know. I can’t help it.” He muttered.
She chuckled softly before she stepped back. She was all done and Seonghwa looked as handsome as ever. It brought tears to her eyes. “Your parents would be so proud.” She said softly.
Seonghwa smiled sadly. “I wish they would be here to see this. I’m sure my father would be so proud that I’m marrying a prince.” He teased.
“He would be boasting about it to the whole town.” Eunji said, agreeing. They were ready and when the door opened, Hyunwoo stepped in, telling them it was time. So Eunji gave him a warm smile. “Let’s go.”
The royal wedding would have the Lords, Ladies and all other royal families attending. It would be one of the biggest events of the year and as they approached where the reception would be, Seonghwa felt like he could throw up right there, especially staring at the door. Eunji positioned him and smoothed out some of his clothes. She grabbed the bouquet from Hyunwoo. “Don’t look at anyone else, just look at Hongjoong.”
He nervously nodded and took a few deep breaths and then, the doors opened. Their eyes met and at that moment nothing else mattered as he walked down the aisle to Hongjoong, his prince he fell in love with at the ball and when he stood in front of him the biggest grin grew on his face. Hongjoong mirrored it then. “Are you ready for forever?”
He nodded to him, it was all he wanted. “Of course.”
Then they lived happily ever after…
The End
