All I Ask

Summary:

It's been two years since Mon-El had vanished into space, never to be seen again. But then he comes back. Kara said she was happy with you, but as soon as he shows up, suddenly it all changes. Will you ever stand a chance against the Daxamite prince?

Notes:

Okay so I know in the show it was 7 months. But now, its been 2 years because these two needed more time together before Mon-El came in and ruined it. I will be so honest, him before the time jump is the literal worst and after he is married, his character is better.

This was just an excuse to write angst. Have fun!

Work Text:

You were halfway across town on an assignment when you got the call from Winn. You were walking down the street with Lena Luthor, finding that you actually enjoyed the scientist/business woman’s company when your phone started ringing in your pocket. The iced coffee in your hand shifted to the other as you fished your phone from your pocket and answered it without checking who it was.

“Hello?” You glanced at Lena, still walking with her and she watched in real time as your face went from shocked, to somewhat upset. “W-Wait, hold on, slow down… Winn, are you s-saying that–”

Lena could hear that the person on the other end was shouting before the call was cut off and you just stared at the blank screen that swished back to your home screen after a few seconds. Your brows pulled down in irritation and Lena heard how the plastic cup in your veined hand groaned, nearly cracking.

“Is everything alright?” Lena frowned, cautiously reaching for your shoulder like you were a ticking timebomb. “Do you have to head out?”

“I uh… I think I do, yeah,” You tucked your phone away, tossing the rest of your drink into a nearby trash can. “Will you be okay getting to CatCo?”

Lena laughed, smiling wide and showing off her pristine white teeth. “It’s half a block away, I’m sure I can manage.”

You smiled back, nearly about to run away. But the way the air around Lena shifted made you pause, and you glanced to your right to see that a group of bikers were pedaling hard, and fast in her exact direction. “Watch out!”

Without you, Lena probably would have been run over. You immediately grabbed her arm and yanked her away from the crosswalk, the bikers whizzing by at high speed as Lena stumbled into your chest, grabbing at your biceps and letting out a breath of shock and relief as she felt the muscle under your blazer and glanced up as you wrapped an arm around her to protect her.

It wasn’t until the bikers were gone that you looked down to meet Lena’s eyes. “Are you okay?”

Her face was a deep red, and her breath came out in harsh pants. Fingers curled against the muscle of your arms and she stood upright, fixing her hair and clearing her throat aggressively, like the situation personally offended her. “You, and Supergirl must be tired of saving my life.”

You chuckled. “No, It’s pretty good exercise.”

Lena blushed even harder and immediately separated from your chest, clearing her throat again and crossing her arms across her chest. “W-Well, thank you for the assistance. And… I will text you later?”

You smiled back. “Sure thing, Ms. Luthor.”

“You’ve got to start calling me Lena, agent.”

“Only if you use my name, Ms. Luthor,” You gave her a playful smile before turning around and waving as you rushed off towards the DEO office. It wasn’t exactly close, and you jetted out into traffic at least four times before you finally got to the building.

You stumbled down the stairs, racing through the halls until you turned a corner and nearly slammed into J’onn’s chest. “Shit, sorry sir!”

“Hey whoa, hold on,” J’onn grabbed your wrist before you could bolt off. “Where’s the fire?”

You took a breath, finally slowing down and taking off your jacket that was now stained with sweat. Your shirt clung uncomfortably to your skin as you sighed and ran a hand through your hair. J’onn could clearly tell you were on edge and something was bothering you. But he didn’t even need to be Martian to know what it was. “Someone told you?”

“That Kara’s ex-boyfriend is here?” You scoffed. “Yeah, someone told me.”

J’onn rubbed at his jaw, noticing how the veins in your neck were pulsing angrily. “I didn’t take you for the jealous type, agent.”

You looked at him and had he not been an alien warrior, and your boss, you probably could have strangled him in the moment. “Well, it’s not easy to compete with the Daxamite prince, is it?”

“There’s no competing,” J’onn crossed his arms, standing in that way that reminded you of your father on several occasions. You sighed, rubbing at your forehead and feeling the way your sweat was staining your hairline. “Look, what Kara and Mon-El had, that was almost two years ago… And since then, she has had feelings for nobody but you. But you have to understand, when he left, Kara was heartbroken.”

“I know, the air was toxic and he had to flee to survive,” You brushed off his explanation, trying not to go crazy. “Doesn’t mean that I have to just… be okay with what’s going on.”

“Just go talk to her, go meet him… He’s not a bad guy,” J’onn forcefully turned you around by the shoulders. “Go on, agent.”

A sigh left your throat as you headed towards the direction of the infirmary. Your nerves were practically on fire as you walked, fingers twitching and heart racing with every step towards where you would rather not be in that moment. Did you need to see the man that caused Kara to explore her sexuality? The man that all but made her settle with someone like you?

She went from alien prince to ex-military lesbian, and that is a hard shift to make. You were on edge the whole walk until you reached the infirmary and stopped in your tracks just outside of the room.

Through the glass, you saw Kara sitting next to him. To Mon-El. She was holding his hand next to her face and kissing at his knuckles like he might disappear if she looked away. Tears tracked her face and it was like she just couldn’t believe he was here. The feeling that hit you was like anything you’ve felt in your life.

You had never been jealous before. Not even when your ex-fiancee cheated on you, and left you for her high-school sweetheart. You swore when you were old enough to swear that you would never degrade yourself low enough to fight for someone that didn’t want you. If you had to fight to keep them, they were never actually yours to begin with.

But in that moment, seeing Kara crying over her ex-boyfriend like he hung the stars just for her, you wanted to throw your stupid philosophy out the window. You wanted to fight for Kara Danvers until your knuckles were bleeding and your heart gave out.

Tears pricked at the corners of your eyes, and you immediately turned around to leave. You didn’t need to see this. You knew since Winn called what this was. You didn’t compare to Mon-El, clearly. He was from space, just like Kara, and you were nothing but a mortal human that Kara’s tried to kill before.

“Hey!” You stopped for a second, looking up at Winn who nearly tripped to get your attention. “Hey, did you make it to the infirmary? Did you–”

“I saw what I needed to see,” You brushed him off, ears ringing as you ran towards the elevator. “I’m going home!”

“It’s only 2 o’clock, and you–” A glare was shot at Winn who immediately held up his hands in surrender. You all but slammed your blazer against the wall in a childish fit of rage, before you jumped into the elevator to leave for the rest of the day. The idea of being in the building with Kara fawning over her ex was not on your list of things you wanted to handle today.

As soon as you were outside, the tears finally started to fall, as much as you wish they didn’t. Your heart was racing, and it felt like adrenaline was taking over. You wanted to punch a wall, you wanted to scream, you wanted to cry until you couldn’t move… This was not a good feeling. You hated this feeling.

It was eating at you the whole way home. You must have walked into someone five times on the walk back to your apartment as you stripped off your clothes and forced yourself into a shower. You wanted to calm down, but you also felt disgusting and overstimulated, like the walls were closing in on you.

It wasn’t until you were laying in bed, and feeling Tigger rub against your leg that you finally checked your phone. Several missed calls from Alex, one from J’onn, and a lot of unread text messages… but nothing from Kara. She's busy cozying up to Mon-El. You became old news very quickly.

You were about to drop your phone down and call it a very early night when your screen lit up again and almost instantly, you answered it. “Hello?”

“Hello agent,” Lena said on the other end, making you roll your eyes as you sat up from the mattress. “I hope I’m not calling you at a bad time–”

“No, not at all,” You stood up from the bed. “Did you need something, Ms. Luthor?”

“Actually,” There was a slight mischievous tone to her voice, and you found yourself getting intrigued by whatever it was she was about to say. “I would like to thank you for today, properly. Would you like to meet me for dinner?”

For a second, you were beyond stunned. Was Lena Luthor asking you out? Was she flirting with you? The possibilities were quite literally endless as you kept silent for longer than you should have. It wasn’t until Lena said your name that you finally snapped back to reality… She said your actual name.

“Are you asking me on a date?” You questioned gently.

Lena made a sound from the other side of the phone and you found yourself blushing in response. “This is strictly a thank you for all you’ve done for me, a dinner between friends.”

A part of you thought about Kara, and how this would probably be disrespectful towards her and she would see it as you drifting towards someone else. But on the other hand, screw it. Kara was kissing Mon-El’s hand in the medbay, you could go out on a friendly dinner with Lena Luthor!

You put on one of your more dressy outfits, a dark blue turtleneck with black dress pants and black dress shoes, adding a simple silver chain around your neck and on your wrist, sliding on your various silver rings and heading out for the night. You can only imagine what Lena Luthor had in store for you.

The restaurant was far nicer than you could have ever imagined. Crystal chandeliers over the entire ceiling that was made of glass, marble pillars around every corner, works of art hanging from the walls that cost more than your living room furniture… It was the definition of rich and elegant. Hell, Lena Luthor was the definition of rich and elegant.

She wore a beautiful wine red dress that fit her body like a second skin, black high heels, and her hair was slightly curled at the end, a few pieces held back with a silver decorative hairpin. Her lipstick complimented the outfit perfectly, and in the soft lighting of the restaurant, she looked like royalty.

You were slightly on edge, your fingers tapping against the table’s surface as you glanced at the wine in the decanter and let out a little sigh of nervousness. Lena noticed it, and carefully reached across the table with her perfectly manicured hand. “Is something wrong?”

“Huh?” You looked up from the table and immediately frowned. “No, no, nothing’s wrong.”

Lena offered a small smile and her thumb ran across the tattoo on your hand. “Do you know how I got to be the leader of L-Corp, agent?”

“Because you’re a Luthor?”

Lena chuckled, but it was dry. “Because if there’s one thing I can do better than anyone, it’s smell bullshit from a mile away,” You flushed, your cheeks turning pink with embarrassment as Lena stared you down with no remorse. “What’s bothering you?”

A sigh left your throat and you rubbed at the bridge of your nose. “My girlfriend still has feelings for her ex-boyfriend.”

The way Lena’s hand tightened around yours made you look up from the table. She had an expression on her face that spoke more than words ever could… She had this look of pure, unfiltered sympathy for you and held your hand with all the care in the world. “Did she tell you this?”

You made a clicking sound with your mouth, sucking on your teeth and looking off towards the floor next to your table. “She didn’t have to. I saw it myself.”

“I see,” Lena frowned, still holding your hand. You didn’t fully hate her touch, but all you could think was that her hand wasn’t as warm as Kara’s was. “Well… Don’t you think you should talk to her about this?”

You rolled your eyes, fighting off the tears. “She’s already forgotten about me, Lena. Hasn’t texted me once since he got back.”

Lena dug her nails into you. “I don’t believe that. You are an unforgettable woman, and I don’t think anyone, even Supergirl, could forget about your existence.”

Your head immediately shot up to meet her eyes as Lena leaned back, picking up her wine glass and smirking at you. She took a small sip from the crimson liquid and didn’t break eye contact with you the entire time. “You two aren’t as low profile as you pretend to be.”

“Wait, wait, hold on,” You held out both hands across the table. “You… knew that I was dating National City’s hero… and you still asked me out?”

Lena just shrugged. “Why not?”

“You’re not afraid of her?”

Lena laughed, and she didn’t hold back. “I’m more afraid of you, agent. Supergirl saves puppies, and doesn’t like resorting to violence… But you, on the other hand… You have a very itchy trigger finger.”

You hissed through clenched teeth. “Is this about that guy last week? Look, he had a gun, I was hired to protect you; I couldn’t just let him hurt you.”

Lena gave a little smile before setting her wine glass back down and tapping her fingers against the table. You had no shame in what you did, and would do it again at a moment’s notice. But you would have also done the same for Alex, James, even Winn. Kara didn’t like it when you protected her, due to her saying over and over again ‘Which one of us is bulletproof?’ in that superior tone she always had when trying to make you see your mortality.

You wish you were bulletproof… Maybe then you could hold a candle to Mon-El in the grand scheme of things. Self doubt filled up your heart and you just sighed. “I have a hero complex, I suppose.”

“That’s what I like about you,” Lena lifted her wine glass up towards you, and waited. “You and I are one in the same… Always having something to prove.”

You chuckled, lifting up your own glass and clinking it against hers. “To wanting to be heroes.”

“To living in other’s shadows…”

You had a feeling that she was talking about the awful legacy her brother left behind…

The rest of the night was the kind of bonding that you genuinely needed with another person. Lena told you about her childhood and how awful her mother was towards her, not to mention Lex and his determination to destroy Kara’s cousin. You told her about your time in the military, and even your time before that chapter in your life.

It felt surreal to think about your life before your service in the armed forces, almost like that piece of you was forgotten… You really used to work at a book store? Back when you wore mismatched knee high socks and had almost zero fashion sense. It wasn’t until you enlisted that you fully discovered who you were.

You were halfway into your dessert when Lena broke the comfortable silence. “So when are you going to talk to her?”

Looking up from the lava cake sitting in front of you, spoon halfway out of your mouth, you coughed a little to clear the chocolate from your throat. “What do you mean?”

“You’re going to have to talk to Supergirl in order for you two to work this out,” Lena stated flatly, one of her perfect brows raising. “You still love her, don’t you?”

Love… You two hadn’t said those words. Kara and you just said how much you adored each other, how special she thought you were, how considerate she was. You two used every single word under the sun, except for that big 4 letter word. It felt like a huge step, and now… Now, was it even worth it? Or would you just be a forgotten phase once she was back with Mon-El?

“We haven’t said it,” You confessed, spoon digging into the cake and watching that molten chocolate ooze out like a freshly opened wound. “I didn’t want to put pressure on her, dating a human but… Yes, I do love her.”

Lena huffed. “Then fight for her.”

You stared at the ceiling for almost two hours before you finally went to sleep that night. The wine was still making you buzz, not enough to be tipsy but enough to make you slightly bubbly under your skin. Fingers slowly traced the scarring on your side before sleep took you.

There was nothing waiting for you in your dreams. Blissful darkness surrounded you and when your alarm went off, you sighed and decided it was now or never. You had to face your demons, ergo men named Mon-El. Whatever you have to do, you’ll do it. Because you were not losing Kara Danvers to some damn prince from outer space.

You put on the black cargo pants you knew Kara liked the most, and that tight black DEO long-sleeve shirt that accentuated your muscles just right. Pairing it with the thigh holster for your pistol, you headed off to work and when you walked inside, someone immediately grabbed you by the collar and started pulling you down the hall.

“Hey, hey, easy!” You snapped, realizing it was Alex pulling you along until she was tossing you into a room where two others were standing. Winn and James didn’t really make up a terrifying duo, but with Alex standing in the room, you felt smaller than you should have. “Is this some weird intervention or something?”

James held out his phone and you immediately went red in the face. It was a picture from outside of the restaurant last night, Lena holding your hand from across the table. “You wanna explain this?”

“Excuse me? I need to– It was a dinner between friends–”

“Looks like more than friends to me,” Winn remarked, crossing his arms and staring you down. “You’re really cozy with Lena Luthor there.”

“I’m sorry, did you geniuses forget that you assigned me to watch over her after like… the fourth assassination attempt?” You remarked, crossing your own arms. “You expect me to just walk behind her like some stalker the whole damn time and not talk to her? No shit, we’re friends.”

“Agent,” Alex grabbed your shoulder and you felt her fingers dig into the pressure point on your collarbone. You inhaled hard, facing your superior officer. “If you are doing what it looks like you are doing to my sister… I know several ways to make your death look like a convenient accident.”

“Get off my fuckin’ case, Danvers,” You snapped. Damn her superiority. She can’t just threaten you like you didn’t see what Kara was doing. “Kara doesn’t want me now that her precious Daxamite prince is back in her life.”

And suddenly, everybody was quiet in the room. You scoffed, stepping around them. “Yeah, I know. And if Kara wants to talk about it, she can find me herself. Until then, leave me the hell alone and let me do my job.”

When the door sealed behind you, it felt like you were walking on glass. Every step towards your locker felt like stepping on glass, muscles grating against your bones as you aggressively opened the locker door and reached inside for the walkie and your weapon’s belt.

You were about to shut the locker door when someone slammed it behind you and you nearly jumped out of your skin. When you turned to glare at who it was, your anger was suddenly dialed all the way to 11.

“We need to talk,” Kara stared you down, her eyes almost glowing as you noticed the hand-sized dent in your locker now from where she slammed it shut. “What happened to you yesterday?”

“Were you really concerned with my whereabouts?” You snapped, stepping under her arm and strapping the belt around your hips. Kara was reminded of that exact motion from four nights ago and she forced herself to be in this moment. “Didn’t look that way yesterday.”

“Look, you’re probably upset, I get it, but Mon-El is–”

“Supergirl,” You snapped, staring down at the woman in her hero suit. She immediately stopped talking. “I… I don’t want to hear about Mon-El. He was, for all intensive purposes, your perfect match, wasn’t he? Your other half, that person you couldn’t live without.”

“Yes, but–”

“And now he’s back,” You cut her off again. “So why are you still wasting your time with me? He’s here. Just go be with him, you clearly want to, from what I saw yesterday.”

“You’re not listening–”

“No, you aren’t hearing me!” You shouted, slamming your foot against a bench in the locker room, knocking over the metal surface and making Kara flinch in place. “I saw you yesterday with him… The second Mon-El came back, he was all you could see. You forgot all about me. I didn’t even exist to you.”

Kara didn’t say anything. She pressed her hand against her mouth, just letting you yell at her like she deserved it. Despite the tears brimming in her eyes, you kept going, still needing to get this out before you exploded.

“I came in here, prepared to fight to keep you. But I… am so tired of fighting for people that don’t want me,” You rubbed at your forehead. “I can’t keep doing this. I cannot keep giving everything to someone who doesn’t see me the same way–”

“He’s married,” Kara finally cut you off. You looked up at her for the first time and saw the tears falling down her face. “Mon-El is married.”

And for some reason, that made you more angry than anything else possibly could have. That’s all she had to say for herself? You pour out your whole heart and all she can say is that her dream man was taken by someone else?

“So… what I’m hearing is,” You laughed, cold and dark. “You only came to find me because you can’t be with him now.”

“Wait, no, that’s not what I–”

Tears tracked your cheeks as you held up your hands in surrender, stepping away from the wall and towards the exit. “Save it, Supergirl. I know for a fact that if he wasn’t married, you wouldn’t even be talking to me right now.”

“You have no idea what I’m feeling,” Kara defended, glaring at you. You once shrunk under the heat of her gaze, but now you just wanted to get away from her and avoid the Kryptonian like the plague. “Do you have any idea how hard it was for me? To watch the love of my life disappear into space, not knowing if he survived or not? Sending him off to his possible death and suddenly he’s back?”

Those words hit you like a punch to the chest. Love of my life… Kara still saw him as the love of her life… And it was in that moment that you knew where you stood in all of this. You were a fantastic placeholder, keeping the space warm for someone that Kara actually loved. Because in your eyes, it was never going to be you.

“Love of your life, huh?” You stated flatly. Emotion was gone from your face, and your tears dried up all at once. Kara looked at you like she was seeing a stranger in front of you… Since you two met, you had been nothing but kind, warm, and safe. Everything she needed after her rough life and upbringing. But now? You felt cold. Closed off. Kara couldn’t even hear your heartbeat anymore… You always told her that before you left the army, you put up walls around yourself to stay safe from the inside out… Was this what you meant?

Kara realized what she said, but it was too late to fix it. You stepped towards her, standing over her in height and for the first time, you looked down on her. Like she wasn’t your girlfriend. Just someone that hurt you.

“You know, I had hoped that… one day, you would have called me that,” She said your name, but you kept talking. “But it’s clear to me where I stand with you, Supergirl…”

When the locker room door shut behind you, it felt like your heart was breaking. Kara just admitted to you that you weren’t the one she actually loved. And now you had to handle that heartbreak in silence while working in the same damn building as her.

Every time you found something to do, you felt eyes staring you down. It was either Kara, Alex, Winn, or on the rare occasion, Mon-El. So he must have found out who you were… Whatever. Let him know who you used to be. You were a soldier long before you were Supergirl’s girlfriend. Let that be what you were known for, and not some broken hearted loser.

Whenever you caught yourself looking at Kara, you tore your eyes away and went back to whatever it was you were doing. You waited until 2 PM, and then you left for your daily escorting job. Walking Lena from L-Corp to CatCo became routine now. Lena probably could take a private car, but she always gave you iced coffee and it made you feel special that she remembered your order.

You both walked to the CatCo office in comfortable silence, slowly sipping on your iced coffee that was dark amber, but had more cinnamon syrup than one would deem healthy by a long shot. The second you two approached the building, you held the door open for Lena who motioned for you to come inside with her.

“Lena, I should… get back to HQ before–”

“This will only take a minute, come on,” She directed you towards the elevator that you both took to the top floor. Once inside, Lena led you into the massive office past all the workers desks that gave you strange looks. You looked like you were here to arrest Lena, wearing all black in the white office building.

Once you stepped inside, the lineup of scotch on the wall was the first thing you saw, along with the dozens of TV screens mounted to the walls. “It’s still weird that you own this place…”

Lena sat down on the couch, putting her hot latte on a coaster while she patted the space next to her. You sat down, sighing a little and following her lead with putting your iced coffee down. It was clear she wanted to talk to you about something, and you had a feeling you knew exactly what this was about. “Lena, if you’re about to try and give me some kind of life lesson, let me just–”

“Shut up,” She immediately cut you off, making you go silent but in shock, not following her orders. “Listen to me right now, you understand me?”

“Okay…?”

Lena grabbed both sides of your face and stared down into your eyes like she wanted to communicate with you telepathically. “You are an amazing, gorgeous, strong, independent, wonderful woman. You are powerful, compassionate, and selfless beyond comprehension.”

“Thank you?” You frowned a little, clearly not understanding where she was going with this.

“You are better than most men I have ever known,” She carefully brushed the hair away from your eyes, not breaking contact. “And if Supergirl can’t see what you are worth, then she does not deserve you.”

Reality came crashing down on you, and it felt like your lungs were being crushed. Tears began flowing freely and you fell face first into Lena’s chest, sobbing and grabbing at the fabric of her jacket like it was keeping you down on the ground. Lena wrapped both arms around you, letting you finally break down with the weight of what actually happened to you hitting like a bus.

Kara would have chosen him… If Kara had the choice between you and Mon-El, it wouldn’t have been you… And that hurt more than anything ever had. You would rather Kara break your spine again than break your heart.

“I t-thought she was th-the one person that did,” You said through sobs, staining Lena’s shirt as she made no attempt to push you away. She let you cry until your muscles ached and your throat was sore. Nothing could make this pain go away. “I loved her, Lena… I really loved her.”

“I know, sweetheart,” Lena gently rubbed at your back, attempting to soothe the pain you were feeling in any way she could. “I know… I’m so sorry.”

It made sense that when you got back home after work, you poured yourself a huge glass of whiskey and lost yourself in a collection of your favorite films. It was easier to forget about how bad it hurt when you were sipping from the glass of chilled alcohol and curled up under a fluffy weighted blanket.

Tigger had parked himself on your side, making sure you weren’t alone as he kneaded at your hip every once in a while. One of your comfort movies played for the third time, and you lost yourself in the comforting opera music that echoed in your apartment. Gerard Butler’s voice was soothing you like it always did, and you nearly drifted off to sleep to Music of the Night, just like Christine Daaé.

The situation was comical, really. Just like the movie, Christine forgets all about Raoul whenever the Phantom was in her focus of view. His bewitching voice and false sense of security lowered her defenses and made her vulnerable to the pain that he would inflict on her, not with physical harm, but with psychological torture.

A tale as old as time… Two men, fighting for the same girl. Maybe it would have been easier if Mon-El was still single and you were fighting him for Kara’s affection. But no, she was more distraught over him being married than anything else. She didn’t even care about how she hurt you…

It was only after you felt your glass was empty that you stood up from your little nest and went back over to the counter. You uncorked the whiskey bottle and poured another glass, heavy handed with the pour and adding a small amount of ice to keep it chilled. Your club instinct said to not ice the whiskey, but you didn’t give a shit.

You took a long drink from the glass, slightly stumbling on your feet as you made your way back to the couch. You were about to sit down when you heard a knock at your front door. Maybe if you were completely silent, they would go away…?

No such luck. They knocked again. You sighed, putting the glass down harder than intended and went to the front door. When you pulled it back, you saw the last person you expected to see.

Kara stood there, like a puppy begging to come back home after being tossed on the street. Those big, wide eyes and that sad stance had your heart breaking all over again. You saw her hold herself and she made a sound of anguish. “C-Can we talk?”

You should have shut the door in her face. Should have told her to get lost. But your heart still melted for her, and you couldn’t bring yourself to do anything of the sort. As soon as the door was pulled back, Kara stepped inside and noticed the half empty bottle of whiskey and the movie playing louder than usual.

With shaking hands, you turned down the volume on the TV, not putting you both in complete silence as you reached for the glass and took a long drink. “What do you want, Kara?”

The super hesitated, biting her lip and not meeting your eyes as she leaned against the countertop. “I…Realized now that I wasn’t fair to you.”

You didn’t interrupt her this time. More than anything, you wanted to know where this was going, and if you deserved to give her this chance.

“You were right,” Kara turned around, tears tracking her face as she took off her glasses. “As soon as I saw Mon-El, nothing else mattered to me… I forgot who I was, and could only remember who I had been two years ago.”

Kara paused, her bottom lip quivering and her eyes turning red, a sign that she was about to start sobbing. “I… I can’t pretend I didn’t love him, because I did.”

“I know,” You sighed, sitting down on the couch and pressing the chilled glass to your forehead. You had spent so much time crying today that you didn’t have any more tears left in you. It wasn’t until you were sighing that you felt a hand against your shoulder and Kara sitting down on the couch next to you.

“What I felt for Mon-El was real,” She sobbed. “But what I feel for you is just as real.”

You finally looked up, meeting her watery gaze. She whimpered, holding your eye contact and pressing both hands against your face while trying not to break down in front of you.

“I didn’t realize what I h-had until it was gone,” Kara hiccuped. “Seeing you walk away was the worst feeling in the world.”

A little sigh left you as you leaned forward and pressed your forehead against Kara’s. You still had your walls up, and you weren’t about to be vulnerable unless she felt actual remorse for what she did to you. “I won’t be your second choice, Kara.”

“You’re not,” She cried, immediately crawling into your lap and holding you down under her strong legs. You pressed your hands against her waist and the longer she was near you, the calmer you felt. “Please, all I want is another chance… you’ve given me a peace I’ve never known before you.”

“Prove it,” You demanded, pulling back enough to look into her eyes. Her tears fell down on your cheeks as your fingers dug into her hips. “Prove to me that I’m your choice, Kara.”

Without hesitating, Kara bent down and pressed her lips against yours. A shudder raced down your spine, hands sliding up the back of her shirt until you were digging your nails into her skin. It felt like nothing more than a tickle to the kryptonian as she threaded her fingers in your hair and pulled back enough to whisper against your mouth.

“I love you,” It was soft, gentle, but she said it… And she meant it. Kara does not lie like this, and you knew that she could have walked away if she wanted to. The super had no reason to return to you, could have moved on and forgotten all about you. But Kara was here, pushing her tongue against the pulse in your neck and whining out those words you have been dying to hear her say since you both met. “I love you so much, baby. So much.”

You cried out, gripping her ass when her teeth sunk into your neck. “I love you too, Kara… Fuck, I love you more than I’ve loved anybody.”

“I know,” Kara huffed, looking down at you with tear-stained eyes and like she wanted to eat you alive. “I know that now… And I’m not letting you go. Ever.”

The music of the movie played in the background as you gently pulled on her blonde hair and kissed up the side of her neck. Like Raoul’s declaration of love to Christine on the rooftop of the opera house, you whispered how much you loved Kara Danvers into her skin and across her entire body for the rest of the night.

Kara swore that she would never be blinded by the past again. Mon-El was in the past, and with you? You were her future, and she wanted to walk into that future with the woman that changed her life.

“Love me… That’s all I ask of you…”
