Summary
Ilya Rozanov, 51, is The Beguiler, the most prolific serial killer of all time, on death row, set to be executed in six weeks.
Enter Shane Hollander, 18, the youngest Pulitzer-winning photojournalist for his work capturing the families of The Beguiler’s victims. Desperate for material to include in the book he’s writing on the case, Shane writes to Ilya asking to interview him. He doesn’t expect a response; Ilya hasn’t allowed a single interview in forty years. But to his shock, he agrees, with two conditions: Shane can ask anything he wants, as long as Ilya gets to tell him a story– and he can only interview him for twenty-four hours, just before Ilya loses all contact with the outside world for good.
So Shane accepts and both he and Ilya go on an odyssey neither could anticipate full of whimsy, hard-won truths and the devastating weight of the crimes that brought them into each other’s lives. As the hours tick down, Shane looks at Ilya less like a monster and more like someone he could love. But with the execution and communication ban looming, Shane and Ilya must figure out how to let their love blossom against all odds– or let it vanish altogether.
