Work Text:

Mathildis hadn’t fallen out of love with Akemi. It would have been easier if she had. Akemi had interfered with her work, told her it was wrong. She didn’t understand. It seemed nobody did. Mathildis had to do what she was doing. What did the cost of a few lives matter when so many more could be saved? She’d thought Akemi would understand that, but it seemed she’d been wrong. Some people couldn’t be taught, she supposed.

When Akemi had interrupted her, shouting and moralising, she’d felt a lightning strike of fury. In that moment, she could have killed Akemi, no matter that she loved her. Or maybe because of that very love, and the trust she had placed in her. Akemi knew what Mathildis did for a living, who she worshipped. It wasn’t her fault if she’d failed to question the details. It wasn’t like Mathildis had been hiding them. She just hadn’t said anything. Was she meant to tell Akemi her every move now?

So, yes, she still loved Akemi, but if she saw her again after their screaming match and Akemi’s subsequent departure, she might just stab her.
