Summary
It was a crisp and cold day in Montreuil-sur-mer, the winter was finally upon the poor citizens who could be seen scurrying through the streets in a hurry to get home.
"In the end what could go wrong?" thought Valjean, but he knew he was just trying to convince himself. Moreover He was doing a poor job of it, the more he paced around the office the more restless he became. "It's only a normal celebration, nothing you haven’t already done before, nothing new to worry about." Except that even to his ears the words seemed empty and weak. He knew that the problem didn't rely on the celebration per se, the one he was bound to attend in the evening, but rather the cause of such an occasion.
The party was supposed to be just another way of gathering money for the new school in construction, but after the outstanding performance of his chief of police who just two days ago was able to finally track and subdue one of the most notorious criminals whose presence was plaguing the town for weeks, many people decided to honor the man with a dedicated event.
He went to the party of course.
