A Little Less Lonely

Summary:

A fanfic of Keferons "Space Roomates AU" because it has infected my brain on a microbial level.

Notes:

I have never written a fanfic of an AU before, nor do I usually post what I write. BUT THE CHOKEHOLD KEF HAS ON ME RN???? I blinked and this thing existed. If I add to it, it'll most likely be based on comic's or ideas I thought were cute / funny, so I'll keep my options open and mark this as ongoing

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: Misunderstanding

Chapter Text

The first thing he noticed was the silence. Not the silence of a station’s sleeping quarters, always full of snoring and muttering and people waking up to go to work. It was the silence of solitude.

Blurr hated solitude.

It made him think of the ‘ship’, and the empty void that used to house stars, and of leaving behind everything he knew, and of dying with nothing but a metal box to house his remains, and of-

His breathing had picked up before he’d fully woken up, but in an instant he was no longer laying on what should’ve been a metal slab.

He rubbed at his eyes with his bony hands, trying to wipe away the remnants of his thoughts. Those wouldn’t help. Not right now anyways.

Blurr opened his eyes, then closed them again. Even in the dark, he knew something was wrong. He wasn’t on his ‘ship’ anymore, that was for certain. The room he occupied was too spacious. Too pristine. But there was only him and his ship, there was nothing else, no one-

“No-” a whisper, just outside the door.

“No, I know you ‘want meet’ but he’s resting and you’re scary. He barely even let me near him long enough to get him to that room, if he sees you he’ll probably have a heart attack and die.”

Odd warbling followed, matching the volume of the hushed voice. It was unlike anything Blurr had heard before, he couldn’t even try to think about it as sluggish memories began to surface.

His ‘ship’ was grabbed. Pulled. He was panicking, something was going wrong. Some irregularity was pulling him off course. It knocked him around enough to send him unconscious, which wasn’t all that hard in a small tin can.

From there things got weirder.

He came too with his sonar going berserk, everything else tech wise - a radio, a light bulb, the seatbelt light he had for some unknown reason - had stopped working. His breathing was labored, he was probably running out of air or something.

He let himself fall asleep again, sure it was death claiming him in the empty void of space his body would forever inhabit.

He was most likely hallucinating when he heard metal hit his ‘ship’, and again when he felt it lurch in a new direction. And again when the top - or whatever side was vaguely up at that moment - was pried open, and a blinding light poured in, and an angel descended from above and-

The wall opened near him, revealing that it had in fact been a door the whole time, and blinding light poured into the room.

Blurr flinched away, immediately falling off whatever he’d been laying on and launching himself at the thing that was definitely coming to get him and probably eat him or experiment on him or whatever other horrible thing space creatures did with malnourished humans drifting alone through the cosmos.

He hit it dead on with his shoulder, hearing a pained grunt when he collided with something that definitely felt like bone. Blurr instantly launched into a barrage of hitting and kicking the thing wherever he could reach, he even managed to bite something before finally getting flung back onto whatever he’d woken up on.

Lights blinked to life above him, momentarily blinding him yet again as the thing he attacked retreated back beyond the doorway.

“Sorry! I’m sorry! I just- I wanted to check on you! I didn’t mean- IS THIS A TOOTH?! Imgonnathrowupohhhmagod-” quickly followed by retching and what sounded like footsteps running away from the room.

Blurr took a second to process what just happened. He understood what it said. He understood the alien. The alien that, now that he thought about it, had a human-like silhouette…

Blurr slowly stood up again and made his way to the doorway, numb with disbelief as he finally let himself take in his surroundings. The metal walls around him reminded him of home, minus the people crowding every square inch of available space. The floor was cold underneath his bare feet, but he didn’t give it much thought until he realized the rest of him wasn’t nearly as cold.

He looked down at himself and saw clothes. New looking clothes. Clean, soft, warm and very large clothes that he was definitely not wearing before. He slowly grabbed the oversized shirt, squeezing it in a fist with his good hand as if testing for any tricks or hallucinations.

The arm he’d used to attack his supposed kidnapper wasn’t feeling great, probably dislocated, but he could manage with one and a half for the time being.

The shirt remained intact and real, as did the pants he grabbed a few seconds later. Blurr slowly brought the neckline of the shirt to his face and pressed it to his cheek, entranced by the feel of the fabric against his skin. He hadn’t even realized he’d closed his eyes until his chest started to sweat from his breath going down the shirt.

He quickly let it go, then grabbed it again not a second later. He held it in his bad hand, ignoring the twinges of pain it sent up and down his arm. Clutching it like a lifeline, Blurr started walking in the direction he thought he saw his ‘kidnapper’ go.

As he walked he noticed all of the rooms in the station he found himself on, most of which appeared to be unoccupied or juts unused; which was weird. very weird. A lot of things had been weird so far actually. He needed a new word for it all, weird just wasn’t cutting it anymore.

Blurr kept clutching his shirt as he followed the sounds of retching, which echoed through the metal hall loud and dramatic enough that he quickly found it’s source: a human.

A human.

A healthy human.

A healthy human in nice clothes. On a nice big station. With otherworldly features. Who spoke his language…

The Angel…”

The man- The Angel- snapped his head towards Blurr, away from the bucket he’d been kneeling over and presumably puking into. His eyes went wide behind his thick rectangular glasses as he quickly stood and attempted to hide said bucket by standing in front of it.

“Hi! Hello! Uh, sorry about before, I just- ‘s been a while, since I’ve seen another person, guess I was eager to see you awake, especially after how touch and go it was when we first brought you in-” The man kept talking, his one hand moving around with his words like he was conducting an alphabetical symphony.

Blurr wasn’t listening at all. He was too busy inspecting the supposed mythical being before him. He looked healthier than any human Blurr had ever seen, like how they did in the stories told by elders of earth and life before the stars went dark. He had muscles and filled out his clothes completely. The clothing Blurr now wore was likely his, a gift perhaps?

All the while he spoke, a soft smile never left his face. It was a kind smile, the kindest Blurr had seen in many years. Maybe ever. He felt it in his chest every time his eyes wandered back to look at the man’s face. Some distant part of himself wanted to keep that smile there forever, just so he could keep looking at it. Blurr lingered on the missing arm for longer than was necessary, or socially acceptable most likely, but the man was too caught up in his own speech to notice.

Amidst Blurr’s shameless inspection, he heard a noise from the hall he’d just come from. It was the same low warbling noise he’d heard earlier from outside the door. He turned, intending to investigate, when the man suddenly grabbed his arm. His bad arm. His wince didn’t go unnoticed.

“Are you hurt? Is it from earlier? I’m so sorry, I should’ve been gentler, and oh gosh- YOUR TOOTH!? Let’s get you back to the medical bed and let the health systems check you out again-” Blurr took his arm away from the man, instantly missing the warmth his hand provided. Before any arguments could be made, he grit his teeth and pulled with his good arm, shoving his shoulder back into its socket with a loud crunch.

The man quickly covered his mouth, retching again, as Blurr tested his range of motion on the injured appendage. It was a bit sore, but functional, nothing to complain about. He was more focused on the noise he’d heard, and what the hell it was coming from.

“Guess you’re fine then… Are -ugh, keep it together Shockwave- are you hungry? I can cook you something really quick, the kitchen isn’t too far away.” The man, named Shockwave, asked, regaining his composure as he forced himself not to gag.

Blurr looked at the door again, squinting at nothing, before nodding and following Shockwave back into the hallway and into another room that housed all kinds of equipment he’d never seen before.

Shockwave started making his way towards a long countertop before pausing, then smacking himself in the head and pivoting back towards Blurr. “Where are my manners! I’m Shockwave, well, that’s what everyone calls me at least. My name’s hard to pronounce. What’s your name?” As he spoke he reached his hand out to Blurr, that same kind smile crinkling the corners of his pale eyes as he waited for his guest to respond.

Blurr looked at it for a second before reaching out with his own, not knowing what he was supposed to do.

“Blurr.” He mumbled, and Shockwave lit up upon hearing it. He then grabbed his hand and shook it around for reasons unknown to Blurr, who wasn’t complaining about being able to share the man’s warmth again.

“Great to meet you Blurr, and welcome aboard the Seraph!”

Notes:

Thank you for reading!!!!!!!

About the handshake thing: making purposeful contact with someone in zero G sounded hard, plus there's a lot of time between when Shockwave was in society and what it's like in Blurr's time, so I figured some things would have changed. I like to think Blurr's version of a handshake would be tapping a hand to your mouth, since food is a big thing when you literally don't have earth to make it for you anymore. Idk it sounded cool in my head, do with it what you will :)
