Work Text:
Lukey lay on his bed in his dorm, the silence around him slowly suffocating him.
He still had not gotten used to how quiet the academy was at night. How all the rooms where sound proofed and noise was impossible to get through.
It irked him, it was entirely different to the realm.
The quiet hum of the potion machine in the lab,
the soft noises on the pangolin pups,
The distant explosions of tnt mining…
The gentle breaths of pangi next to him.
It was so different that it made it impossible to sleep. Like the academy was dead at night.
Lukey shut his eyes and immediately regretted it. Because for half a second, he could feel a warmth next to him.
The soft breaths of pangi who had finally gone to be bed, the quiet heart beat that would lull him to sleep on the worst nights.
His chest tightened painfully, he was so scared because he knew the realm was gone now but he missed it so much.
He sat up abruptly, deciding he couldn’t sleep in his room anymore.
He got out his bed and picked Rex up. The tired dragon whining in protest of being woken up.
He started walking around the campus, looking at how desolate the halls where. How beautiful the paintings seemed as the moonlight hit it.
He lay down on the grass of the lupi courtyard and looked at the moon. At how its glow hit everything around him, giving the idea that he was never alone.
It calmed him down, the fear being replaced with the familiar void of no emotions.
A soft hum left his body.
While it was cold outside, it was much nicer that how it was in his room.
He was surrounded by the sounds of nature, something the academy couldn’t possibly get rid of.
“Lucas, what are you doing”
He heard a voice say, opening his eyes, he saw the sun guard.
“Never call me that again”
He said, the formal tone reminding him too much of newt.
“Why are you outside, with Rex no less. The poor dragon could freeze.”
The guard observed.
“My dorm is too quiet, I can’t sleep.”
“So you came outside?”
“Exactly”
Lukey sat up, letting Rex move from his chest to his lap.
The guard stared at him for a long while, the detached and emotionless gaze reminding him too much of the keepers.
“This place unnerves me. Its way too quiet for a place full of people. Back… where I’m from, there could be single person near you and there would still be chaos, explosions, all sorts of noise”
“You think it’s creepy?”
Lukey nods, looking up.
“It’s suprising”
He says, staring at nothing.
“I’m so used to constant noise, I don’t know how to stay in silence”
The guard tilts his head, trying to make sense of the anomaly of a student infront of him.
“You come from a violent place. The here’s no towns or civilisations close to the academy that are. You are confusing Lucas.”
“I said don’t call me that”
Lukey glared, gritting his teeth.
“Why not set a noise maker in your room?”
The guard suggests, quickly moving on.
“I’ve tried, it didn’t work.”
Lukey looked at the moon. He knew why, he was used to sleeping next to someone. Used to the warmth that the pangolin hybrid gave off, used to how pangi would curl around him to “protect him”.
But pangi was dead in this world. so there was no one to share his bed, no one to sit there and whisper sweet nothings into his ear after a nightmare.
The guard sighed, tiredness clear in his actions.
“I’ll see to it that something is set up for you. But i am not sure it will happen. Now please head to your dorm, there’s a reason we don’t was students walking the halls at night.”
The guard turned and walked away, leaving lukey alone again.
The boy sighed and stood up, walking back towards his dorm. The quietness seaping back into his bones, impossible to shake off.
He got back to his dorm and set Rex down, watching the dragon curl up in a random corner. He sighed and collapsed onto his bed, staring at the wall to his sighed.
He really hated the silence.
