Steamrolled into a Better Life

Summary:

Instead of being alone while his friends enjoy their Hogsmeade weekends, Harry joins Theodore Nott in the library. A casual acquaintance offers different perspectives on what Harry has to deal with while opening his eyes to everything and everyone around him. It leaves him with more questions but a bigger world.

It tries to answer the question. What would Harry's life be like if he made a few Slytherin friends?

I hate this summary. Harry and Theo, third year, anxiety, invisibility cloak, Animagus, and shenanigans.

Chapter 1: What? Who? I've Never Seen You Before in My Life!

Chapter Text

Harry is sulking. Not actually sulking, no, he’s not. It’s just what Hermione and Ron are telling him. ‘Quit sulking, Harry.’ He’d like to see how much sunshine they’d have if they weren’t allowed to go to Hogsmeade. What complete crap, honestly. Like the Dursley’s would ever give him permission to do something fun.

“Quit sulking, Harry.” Ron says through a mouth full of food.

“Oh Harry, we both know you won’t be the only one stuck at Hogwarts; and before you say anything about the first and second years, you know I’m not referring to them.” Hermione puts more food on his plate.

He’s not eating, why she keeps putting food on his plate he doesn’t know.

“We’ll bring you loads of treats back, mate.” Ron grabs one of the chicken legs off his plate, “We’ll get some prank stuff too.”

“It’s fine. I don’t even care.” Harry moves his peas under his mashed potatoes. Why did Hermione have to put peas on his plate. Has he ever eaten peas? No, he hasn’t and…

“Excuse me, Harry Potter.”

Harry, Ron, and Hermione turn to see a tall dark-haired boy standing behind them, flanked by two girls, both blond. All three dressed in Slytherin robes.

“Yeah?”

“Is it true?” The boy asks in some type of posh accent Harry can’t place. Well he can, he sounds like Malfoy.

“Is what true?” Harry looks up at him. Should he stand? He feels like they should all be standing. The Slytherins don’t need help looking down on them.

“We heard that you’re not going to Hogsmeade tomorrow.” The tall blond girl tilts her head, looking at him.

“Blimey, how did you hear about that?” Ron frowns.

“Malfoy.” The three Slytherin say together.

“Of course.” Harry sighs, “Why do you want to know?”

“We didn’t think that it was some big secret? We apologize for intruding, but I would like an answer regardless.” The boy says.

“And you are?” Harry smirks, he’s pretty sure he’s never seen this boy before in his life. One of the girls he does know, Daphne Greengrass, one of Parkinson’s cronies. The other girl, nope, never seen her before.

“Are you serious?” The aristocratic drawl more pronounced in his confusion. “Honestly, Potter, I never believed Draco’s rants about how self-centered you are, but obviously I was wrong.”

“Harry…” Hermione whispers.

“No, no, Granger. This is between Potter and I.” The boy squats to meet his eyes. “Harry Potter, you honestly don’t know who I am?”

“Should I?”

“Yes, you really should.”

“Why?” Harry smirks.

“Because Potter, we’ve had two or three classes together every year.” He swipes down his robes, “Every single class you’ve shared with my house, I’ve been in. I have been called on in class, by name. For three years, Potter. If your Granger doesn’t answer a question, and Draco doesn’t answer, it usually falls to me. By name, Potter.” He frowns at the confusion on Harry’s face, “You really don’t know who I am?”

“Sorry, no.”

“Do you know them?” He points towards his blonds.

“Daphne Greengrass, Pansy Parkinson’s friend.”

Daphne smiles, looking smug.

The other girl scrunches up her nose, looking away. She takes a deep breath before turning back to look at Harry. She offers him her hand, “Tracey Davis, I’ve also been in all our shared classes since first year.”

“Are you sure you want to do this.” Daphne leans down towards the boy.

The boy flicks Harry’s knee with his finger, and Harry takes Tracey’s hand. “Sorry, Tracey, it’s nice to officially meet you.”

He flicks Harry’s knee again, gaining his attention, “Well Potter, are you going to Hogsmeade tomorrow or not?”

“Are you asking Harry to go to Hogsmeade with you?” Ron laughs.

The boy ignores Ron, staring at Harry for an answer.

“No.” Harry meets his eyes. The dark blue of the boy’s eyes looks lighter surrounded by the black of his lashes.

He stands quickly, “Perfect.” The boy smiles, “Neither am I. We shall meet in the library at 10:00, yes?”

“Ah…”

“Wonderful.” He turns to leave.

“Wait. I still don’t know who you are.”

“Theodore Nott, a pleasure to make your acquaintance.”

Harry watches the three Slytherins walk back to their table.

“That was completely mental.” Ron chuckles, “You’re not going to meet with him, are you?”

“I don’t know.”

“Oh Harry, you can’t.” Hermione sighs, “Everyone is trying to keep you safe. You can’t meet a Death Eater’s son when no one’s around. What if it’s a plot to capture you?”

“How do you know he’s the son of a Death Eater?”

“Everyone knows, mate. Hermione’s right, he could be working with Sirius Black.”

“He didn’t even tell you why he wanted to meet with you.” Hermione adds.

“You’re right.” Harry smiles, “He didn’t say. I guess I’ll have to go and find out.”

“Harry!”
