Work Text:
With the chaos of the past few days, it’s enough to just want the simpler things in life.
Such is the case that following everything that happened with the Exandrian Accord and the talks in Vasselheim, and getting to meet some of her childhood heroes in Vox Machina, Beau really just wanted to go home and rest. Possibly for a year or so.
Okay, maybe a year is a bit much. But she just wants a little peace before having to get back into the swing of things.
And that peace includes planning to become a counselor at Veth’s camp this summer. That among other things.
First things first… she just wants to go home with her wife.
When the teleportation circle flares to life and deposits them in the familiar archive of the Cobalt Soul, and the familiar guards don’t bat an eye at this point to the sudden appearance nor the familiar arcane vibe of Caleb Widogast’s magic, Beau and Yasha bid the dirt wizard farewell as he makes his way to Rexxentrum. No doubt to cover after his partner’s unintentional faux pas when his disguise was removed following the first resurrection to be undertaken following the Cathatheosis.
Seriously? Is that the term the Matron had settled on?
She can’t help but shake her head. Things are definitely gonna be wild for the world without the gods being involved in the lives of mortals. But truth be told, they’ve been distant since the gate was formed. This is just another means of distance.
They’ll be back, but it’ll also be a mad effort to search for them. Fjord and Cad will no doubt be invested in the Wildmother’s well-being. When the time comes, the Mighty Nein will absolutely help out.
For now, it’s a brand new day. A brand new era.
And she just wants to sleep. She hasn’t gotten a proper break since the Apogee Solstice chaos broke out.
Finally she can catch her breath.
“It’s gonna be hard for me now.”
As they walk the street, Beau looks up at her wife, a pensive look on her face.
That’s right. She too follows a deity. And she’d been putting her faith in His guidance.
“Thunderstorms gonna feel different going forward, huh?”
“Something like that.”
Gods, this is awkward. Beau doesn’t know what to say to make this any better. Maybe this is best left alone.
Their familiar home comes into view. It’s a sight for sore eyes.
“How about we don’t think about that right now…”
She holds Yasha’s hand gently.
“…and just worry about us? Because I am cranky and hungry.”
That gets a laugh out of the angelkin.
“True. We haven’t been home for weeks. And I miss being able to cook. I’ll have to go shopping, of course; there may not be fresh ingredients for me.”
Beau starts pulling ahead, still holding Yasha’s hand. “I think we’ll manage, babe.”
Worries like whether they have anything good to eat at home, or whether they have to spend money for good…
Those are much simpler concerns that she misses having to think about.
That’s what normal people worry about.
And just for today, before she’s called back to work… She wants to live a normal life at home.
And she knows her partner feels the same.
The locks on their front door are as secure as they left them.
Everything they left behind is as they left it.
The fireplace once stoked provides that familiar cozy warmth.
And as it turns out, there’s still fresh enough food in the house after all.
That’s one less thing to worry about.
There was one additional thing, though, that was left outside their home. Hidden beneath the steps.
Only a few people are aware of that compartment.
Beau inspects the item in question, and she can’t help but smile.
It’s a wine bottle, with a good vintage. From a winery that’s now in much better hands.
Heard you were finally coming home. Just wanted to leave this here for you.
TJ and I are doing quite well. Hope you see you sometime, my little lion.
Clara
That’s right. Following her father’s humiliation in court, he lost everything: his standing, his wife and son, and even his business which Clara also took from him.
Good riddance, the winery is better off without his influence.
Maybe she and Yasha should pay her a visit.
It is a new era, and that means new beginnings and new opportunities.
No better time to celebrate as she pops the cork after Yasha brings out dinner for the evening.
