- As a kid, Johnny's parents mostly forgot about him and didn't bother to feed him. They'd hit him and yell when he asked for food. This resulted in Johnny never asking the gang for food unless they offered first because he was scared they'd get mad too. Sometimes Two-Bit would secretly put extra snacks in his pockets.
- Soda and Ponyboy refused to ride in cars after their parent's deaths. Pony still made whoever was driving go super slowly, until Johnny and Dally died. While he didn't become suicidal, he didn't really care about dying anymore.
- Ponyboy was insecure of himself since he was a little kid. People would always say he looked like Soda, but he took that as insult to Soda because Pony genuinely hated himself so much.
- Johnny slept in the empty lot pretty often, because while the Curtis's would always let him stay over, he felt like a burden and decided sleeping out in the cold was easier.
- Johnny would occasionally hurt himself and say it was just his parents, then after a while he couldn't remember which scars were from his parents and which scars were from himself.
- Two-Bit hated drinking and Dally hated smoking, they both just felt those were the only ways to make the pain stop. Once, Two-Bit got really drunk and yelled at his sister. She was terrified of him and he became terrified of himself.
- Dally was planning to kill himself for a long time, he only held off because of Johnny. He knew Johnny was suicidal too and would always sit and smoke with him for hours when he looked like he was planning to do it. This kept Johnny from committing multiple times.
- Sodapop would get panic attacks whenever Darry and Pony fought, but never spoke up about it because he thought it made him weak.
- Once, when Dally and Johnny had just met, Dally playfully slapped him. Johnny wouldn't talk to him for a week and the gang had to explain to Dally about Johnny's parents. That was one of the only times Dally cried, and then he went and stole Johnny some ice cream.
- When Ponyboy ran away, Darry blamed himself completely. He wouldn't eat, wouldn't sleep, and wouldn't talk to anybody. He was never one to have nightmares, but sometimes Soda would hear him muttering "It's all my fault, it's all my fault..." in his sleep.
- Soda felt awful and partially blamed himself both when Pony ran away and when he fought in the rumble. He developed a habit of cutting himself, couldn't stop even when Pony got better. Darry found out, and that was one of the only times he yelled at Soda.
- Ponyboy refused to cut his hair for a long time after Johnny died, because he felt like it was the only piece of Johnny he had left. Darry eventually made him and he cried. He kept two pieces near the back of his head growing as rattails, one for Johnny and one for Dally.
- Johnny knew he could've gotten out of the burning church, he purposely got out slowly because he was secretly hoping to die. He regretted it once he saw Dally's face.
- Darry and Two-Bit were the ones to plan Johnny's funeral and get his headstone because Johnny's parents didn't care enough to. The gang and Cherry were the only ones to show up. They brought Dally's jacket and laid it on an empty seat.
- Ponyboy wears Johnny's jacket when he's scared or about to go fight, because he says "that jacket survived so much already, it'll protect me like it did Johnny."
