Blueberry Blues

Summary:

She’s truly, deeply envious. Not just of Juliana, who’s no doubt rising the ranks in the Blueberry League by now, but of her opponents—how lucky they are, to see Juliana’s battling technique while Nemona’s forcibly separated for a whole six months.

Or, Nemona copes with being apart from Juliana for an entire semester.

Notes:

This fic is based off the following prompt by waffleelrond on Dreamwidth: "wishing you care less than you do". Of anyone, I feel like it's Nemona who cares so deeply about everything she does that this fic felt well-suited!!

This is one of many fills of mine for the Yuri Shipping Olympics 2026, which is currently ongoing! If you're interested in writing any sapphic or enbian ships for the Deltarune fandom (my team, but there are many different ones, including a Pokemon team!), feel free to come along and join! Work Text:

It’s not a big deal. Nemona knows it’s not a big deal. Nor is it anything personal. She’s the student council president, it’d interrupt the functioning of the Academy if she left to study abroad! And of course Juliana would take the opportunity—she’s such a skilled trainer, it’d be shooting herself in the foot to not study abroad at a school with an emphasis on battling.

Still, Nemona can’t help herself. She’s truly, deeply envious. Not just of Juliana, who’s no doubt rising the ranks in the Blueberry League by now, but of her opponents—how lucky they are, to see Juliana’s battling technique while Nemona’s forcibly separated for a whole six months.

It’s not forever, she knows, and it’s not as if they haven’t already called with Nemona’s flimsy excuse of preparing Juliana for Doubles teambuilding strategy. But ay, Nemona doesn’t know what she’ll do without the intricate dance of their battles, each move carefully chosen to strike at their opponent’s weak points; it’s the sort of high she doesn’t get from battling anyone else, if anyone else is even willing. And that’s to say nothing of their flourishing romance, too, the little kisses Juliana peppers on her cheeks after taking down Nemona at her full force, a graceful winner.

Nemona groans into her bedsheets and checks her phone. 2:43. Juliana’s probably just getting up and getting ready for class in Unova, but Nemona can’t help herself, tapping out a message.

“oye!!!! let’s call sometime this week, i miss you cariño”

Juliana’s side of the screen bubbles for a while, and Nemona lays her head down on the bedspread, unable to bear watching until she hears the shwoop of a response.

“Miss u 2 nemo, let’s call tn 💕” is the response. Nemona reacts with a matching heart emoji.

If only she could send herself, too.
