Yoonchae had never believed in the gods or negotiating with deities before this. The gods, if truly benevolent and merciful, like the shamans always said, would not have taken her mother so quickly, nor her father so mercilessly, nor her future so unkindly. She was not sure she believed in them at all now, but she was dying on a road in the cold with her hand on a dead girl's face, the only one who cared enough, other than her oldest soldier friend, to ask for her name, and there was a violence in her chest that had nowhere to go and she had to make it go somewhere — she aimed it upward, at whatever was there, at the empty and enormous sky.
