Chapter 1
5 minutes!
He stretched and took a deep breath, relishing the clear sharp air. He looked around appreciating the inky moonless sky. It was a spy’s sky, giving such perfect cover.
4 minutes now.
This felt good. Felt clean, simple. A break from the confusion he had wrestled with since the TV show hijacking. His mind had been in a constant whirr of thought, trying endlessly to determine where his mission ended and his family started. Tonight was a very welcome break, a blast from the past. A straightforward A, B, C of a spy mission;
A. Stealthy break into a remote, high security arms manufacturing plant,
B. Locate and retrieve incriminating evidence of corruption and
C. Make sure the information reached the right hands to stop the arms being diverted to enemies of Westalis.
No emotions, no confusion, no doubt, no limitations, nothing holding him back. He needed this to remember who he was. Twilight – the lone wolf, and more importantly the best agent Westalis had ever had.
3 minutes!
Though, the best agent Westalis had ever had had very nearly been forced to postpone tonight’s mission. This morning, Yor had announced she was having one of her mysterious late nights and Franky was out of town. He rubbed his face ruefully, it was ridiculous that the fate of millions was held in the balance because he was unable to get child care! it was hard to save the world when you were required to put a child to bed. Luckily, the Blackbells’s asked if Anya could stay at theirs for the evening. Seriously, he would have to have a word with the Handler. If Strix really was their top priority they needed to sort out some sort of babysitting cover.
2 minutes!
He stretched again. Where did Yor go on those nights out? He pushed the thought from his mind, not for the first time. He had made a decision months ago not to tail her. She would tell him when she was ready. She wasn’t a suspect or mark and deserved her privacy. Bizarrely, he trusted her and he never trusted anyone. After deceiving her so extensively, refraining from invading her privacy was the least he could do. Still, he would love to know where she went, this was Yor! How bad could it be? He briefly considered it might be a man, then dismissed the thought. He had seen her implode at the very thought of a kiss, an actual romance would kill her, or at the very least a boyfriend – it had been weeks before Twilight had fully recovered from when she knocked him out.
He took another look at the view, nothing for miles. This arms manufacturing plant was absurdly remote. His mind flitted back to Yor. Would she in be one of those mysterious awful moods tomorrow, she sometimes was after a secret outing… He hated it when he didn’t understand her.
1 minute!
He pulled himself together, dragged his black mask down over his disguised face and tensed. Every thought, every nerve, every sinew was now directed to the task at hand and 60 seconds later, as the long midnight train from Urskana clanked and roared past, he leapt into action. He sprinted towards the outside wall of the factory, threw a grappling iron up round the buttress and seamlessly swung up high into the air gliding smoothly before gracefully landing in front of a shuttered window on the first floor. Within minutes he picked his way through the shutter and window and quietly closed it behind him as the train rattled its way out of earshot. It had been an unbelievable feat of beauty and skill. The sort of legendary action that made other agents regard him with awe. However, Twight barely noticed, he had such high expectations of himself that he seldom noticed anything he did well. Preferring to agonise about his rare mistakes instead. He listened carefully, primed for an attack, then relaxed slightly while he took in his surroundings.
Good! The intel he had of the building’s layout appeared accurate and he was in some sort of abandoned storeroom. Carefully he opened the door on to a corridor and made his way through a memorized route to the CEO’s office. It was a straightforward operation; his goal was to leave no trace of ever having been there and like a ghost he slid along the shadows of the night.
The locks on the office were no challenge, nor was finding the hidden safe behind the CEO’s portrait. Really, he expected better from his targets, they just were not trying. He easily deciphered the rudimentary codes on the paperwork and found what he was looking for. As suspected, tanks and arms being made for the Ostania military were in truth being sold to a private buyer within the country. He quickly photographed the evidence and carefully returned everything to it’s place in the safe and office. He calmly turned to leave, before freezing on the spot
What on Earth was that?!
