Train

Summary:

Obi-wan bumps into an old friend on the train

Work Text:

Obi-wan is very definitely not running through the carriage, thank you. Nothing so terribly undignified as that. No, he's making his way at a very reasonable, if suitably swift, pace. There must be a spare seat somewh- ah, there. He collapses into it with an exhausted huff, safety at last, tilts his head back -

"Sitrep?"

"Oh, nothing too awful," Obi-wan replies, eyes still closed, feeling the start of a smile cross his lips as his breathing settles down. "I'm merely employing some evasive manoeuvres against the rather insistent right honourable MP for -"

Obi-wan's brain finally catches up with him.

"...Cody?" He asks. But he doesn't need to. He knows that it is. Despite the fact that it's been years since he last saw the man. Years since they worked together, side by side. He'd answered him automatically, without even thinking. His presence next to Obi-wan something that's natural. Right. Something that's slotted back into place, right next to his heart.

"Sir?" Cody prompts, as if Obi-wan suddenly dropping into the seat next to him on a packed train after years of absence was entirely unremarkable. There's a thick layer of amusement lining his voice and Obi-wan feels his smile stretch just that little bit more.

"My dear," he says, utterly pleased, rolling his head so that he can lazily open his eyes and take in his old Commander. "I do believe this journey has just improved exponenti-"

"Obi-wan?" A voice calls from further down the carriage. Blast. He's been spotted. He feels his eyes widen in panic, even as he watches Cody's eyebrows rise a fraction.

"You were saying, Sir?" Cody murmurs quietly, because he always has been an absolute delight of a bastard. Obi-wan feels his lips twitch into a smile again.

"I stand by it." He insists airily.

"Obi-wan!" The voice calls again, closer this time.

Cody cocks his head, studying Obi-wan assessingly, the hint of a mischievous little smirk just starting to slide across his lips. He has a plan - oh. Oh, Obi-wan knows exactly where he's going with this. Cody's eyes drop to Obi-wan's lips. Deliberately. Eyebrows raised a fraction in query. Obi-wan's heart leaps in his chest, and he doesn't bother smothering his own grin. This is going to be fun. His Commander always comes up with the best plans.

"You've been stealing Ponds' novels again." Obi-wan accuses.

Cody blinks calmly back at him.

"Lies and slander, Sir."

"You're sure-" Obi-wan checks, but he's cut off by Cody's hand slipping round the back of his neck, large and warm, safe, and pressing him gently forward until their lips brush. No uncertainty. No hesitation.

It really is exceptionally lovely. Significantly better than he'd ever imagined, although he had tried not to. It seemed impolite to do so without his Commander's knowledge.

By the time Cody lets him up, the aisle is free of overly insistent politicians, the one in question having huffed in hurt annoyance and slunk off.

"Well, that seems to have worked." Obi-wan observes, incredibly pleased, and not just due to the absence of nearby nuisances.

"The classic ruses often do, Sir."

"My dear," Obi-wan asks, and his voice is perhaps a little closer to a whine than he was planning. "Is the Sir really still entirely necessary?"

"I couldn't say, Sir."

Obi-wan decides that that's quite enough of that, so he threads his fingers through the short strands of his Commander's hair and pulls him back in, feeling his smirk against his lips.

As the train pulls away, Obi-wan catches a glimpse of Cody through the window, head bent forward, likely over his phone. Probably messaging his brothers. He smiles at the thought. Then his stomach drops. Cody's phone number. Why hadn't he got Cody's phone number? That was abominably short sighted of him. He's not at all looking forward to waiting another few years until they bump into each other on public transport again. This is all exceptionally inconvenient.

His phone buzzes in his pocket.

A text.

Obi-wan's suspicions rise, and he can't stop the flare of hope ballooning behind his ribs.

The contact name is Cmdr. Cody.

When had the brilliant bastard swiped his phone?

The message just says 'Sir.'

And before that, dated some half hour earlier, is a love heart emoji. Sent from his phone to Cody's.

He is really very much looking forward to having Cody back in his life. And without the barriers of rank.
