Work Text:
Three years into this relationship with Benson, and Diana is sitting alone on Valentine's Day again.
She's at the rink, doing paperwork things for her dad while Benson's disappeared off to do whatever he's doing.
He forgot what day it is, again.
He never shows up, and she's getting tired of it.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
"Come on in," calls Diana as she settles some papers to the side.
"Diana? I uh... Happy Valentine's Day," Jake's voice is soft as he steps into the room.
Diana's head darts up in surprise to see a bouquet of white roses blocking half of Jake's face.
"Oh," breathes Diana in surprise as she stares at the flowers. "Thank you, Jake. You— You didn't have to go through the trouble of doing all of this though."
"I wasn't going to because I didn't want to only show up with flowers. I wanted you to have someone show up was all," says Jake as he walks over and passes the bouquet to her.
"White Roses are my favorite," says Diana as she takes them with a smile. "But what did you mean by not wanting to just show up with flowers?"
"Ah, that was nothing.," Jake's chuckle is tense as he scratches at his neck. "Anyway, I just wanted to give these to you in person. But I gotta get back to the drills Coach is running."
"Oh, Dad's still here?" Diana's brows furrow in surprise despite the topic switch.
"Yeah, he still wanted to run some drills, so most of us stayed to run them with him. The others left with Benson," replies Jake with a half-shrug as he twists to leave. "We're gonna be here another hour or so. I'm sure your dad will check on you if you don't yell goodbye first. Don't work too hard."
"Shouldn't I be saying that to you?" calls Diana as Jake steps out of the room.
"I never work hard. I just have fun," replies Jake with a chuckle before he disappears from view.
Someone finally showed up for that Valentine's Day, and it was Jake Rivera instead of her own boyfriend.
Recklessly, she pulls out her phone and checks Benson's Instagram. He's dancing with a girl that looks a lot like his ex, and she pulls up their messages.
Diana: Benson, this is the third Valentine's Day in a row that you haven't shown up for. I'm tired of showing up for someone who never shows up for me. We're over.
She blocks him when the message goes through.
Then she takes a picture of the white roses and shares it to her Instagram with the caption, "Thank you for showing up with my favorite flowers. <3<3"
Was it petty? Absolutely.
Does she care? Not at all.
Jake showed up and showed her what she deserves.
Now, she's free to show up for someone else who will actually appreciate it.
And she thinks she knows exactly who she'd like to show up for.
