Work Text:
Match really missed Pencil. She really really really missed Pencil. She dreamed about her almost every night, and she thought about her all the time. Match didn't just miss Pencil, she loved Pencil. And she’s loved Pencil for a long time, at this point probably more than four years. And now she was stuck in a locker with people she didn’t know, no way out, and no Pencil.
Match missed Pencil so badly her chest hurt.
Match sat in the corner of the locker, her hoodie was off for once, her frizzy hair was out of its usual afro puff on top of her head, and she stared down at her arms. Her scars. They had been healed for so long, she hadn’t even thought about them for a while. She obviously covered them all the time so no one knew. Pencil didn’t even know.
Match hadn't wanted to relapse in a long time, but right now she wished she had a sharp object. BFDIA was over, Pencil has had every chance to come and let her out and she hasn’t. Not to mention the last time they saw each other, Pencil didn’t even want to talk to her.
Pencil probably hated her now. She wasn’t useful to the alliance, and she has new friends now. Maybe she even fell in love with one of them and now they’re happily skipping hand in hand throughout Yoyle City showing off how much they love each other. The thought made Match want to die.
She felt tears start to fall from her eyes. She didn’t sob no matter how much she wanted to, because she didn’t need anyone else seeing her like this. All hung up over a stupid girl who probably doesn't even care about her anymore. Match was pathetic. That's what she was, pathetic. She can’t be separated from Pencil without wanting to cut herself and cry over her. Stupid. She was stupid and pathetic.
She was surrounded by people, but without Pencil she felt the most alone she ever had in her whole life.
“Match?”
Match quickly wiped her eyes and put her hoodie back on as fast as she could. She stood up and saw Donut looking at her, seeming concerned.
Match put a hand on her hip, faking confidence. “What do you like, want Donut?”
“Match, are you doing ok?” He asked.
Match’s eyes widened in shock. She expected anything BUT that, especially from someone she barely knew, a stranger practically.
“Like, why do you care?” Match said, crossing her arms. “We don’t even like, know each other, why are you asking me that? I thought you only like, cared about Barf Bag?”
Donut’s eyes narrowed. “That’s kinda rich coming from you.”
Match scoffed. “Like, what is that supposed to mean?” Match was getting more angry and annoyed by the second.
“It’s what I wanted to talk to you about, actually.” Donut said. Match raised an eyebrow at him, and he continued. “It’s about Pencil.”
Match glared. What right did he have to talk to Match about Pencil? Match said nothing though.
“You’ve been isolating yourself from everyone for a while, and whenever you are around and talking you just talk about how much you miss Pencil, and how she’s gonna come get you out of here.” Donut said. “I’m a bit worried, you seem a bit… obsessed for lack of a better word.”
Match clenched her fists. “I am not obsessed!” She said firmly. “I just like, miss her! You wouldn’t know what that’s like would you? You don’t have any friends outside of here do you?”
Donut glared slightly and he sighed. “Okay, Match I want to help you. I know we don’t really know anything about each other, but I am a bit concerned about you, and you aren’t making a good first impression.”
Donut had a point. Maybe it would be good for Match to talk about some of the stuff that had been on her mind. And since she barely knew Donut, he couldn’t judge her that much, right?
Match sighed. “Why do you want to help me? And like, how exactly?”
“Well, I didn’t really make a good first impression in BFDIA, and I wanted to change. I want to be a better, nicer person. And I want to help you because you don’t seem okay. And I can help just by listening to your thoughts. Trust me it works.” Donut smiled a bit. He seemed so genuine.
Match relaxed a bit. “You’re like, really okay with hearing me vent?”
Donut sat down and patted the spot next to him. “I am.”
Match uncrossed her arms and slowly sat down next to him. She started to play with her fingers while talking. She told Donut about her feelings towards Pencil and how she feels with her gone. How she has no one here, no friends. She also brought up her being concerned about whether Pencil even still likes Match anymore. Match left out her thoughts of wanting to cut herself again, and she left out the fact that she had in the past. She wasn’t ready for that yet.
Donut listened intently through Match’s venting. When she started to cry he held her hand silently. Match felt safe around him, he was so welcoming and kind, she didn’t feel scared around him or like she was being judged. Donut made her feel like she was being really listened to. Has Match ever felt that before?
Match started to cry a bit harder as it got harder and harder not to break out into sobs. Donut put his hand on her back and invited her to come closer. Match hugged him tight and started sobbing.
“I’m sorry.” Match said through sobs. This was probably a lot for basically a first meeting.
“It’s okay.” Donut said. “I asked, and you answered. It's not your fault that you’re having such overwhelming emotions right now.”
Match held onto him tighter. “Thank you.” She said quietly.
She was glad they hadn’t attracted any attention, it was rare for Match to ever be this vulnerable. Not around her friends, not even around Pencil. Match might love Pencil, but she never really left like she could show every single part of herself to her. That was probably a pretty big problem.
Right now though, Match was just trying to calm down. She steadied her breaths, and focused on the feeling of Donut’s hand rubbing her back.
“Thank you.” Match said again.
“Of course.” Donut replied. “If it’ll make you feel any better, I can be your friend. I know I’m not a girl, but I hope you won’t hold that against me.” He joked.
Match chuckled. “I won’t.”
