Rain rain don't go away, please come back another day

Summary:

── .✦ Sethoscara week day 4 - rainy day

There wasn’t any music, it was just them. They were dancing to nothing. Either that, or they were dancing to the noise of the heavy rainfall and the gusts of wind passing by. Sethos pulled him back to him, their chests touching, and Wanderer saw the raw joy and amusement in his partner’s face; his vibrant green eyes looked like they could blind someone with the sparkles in them, and his mouth was set in the most adorable smile Wanderer has ever seen on him. How could he be annoyed at this guy?

Notes:

The title is mostly inspired by Umbrella by Duncan Laurence. I know that "rain rain go away" is a children's song, but whenever I hear that line, I get Umbrella in my head.
(original lyrics is "rain rain go away, don't come back another day")

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Sethos could see the thick, dark clouds coming in his direction. It’d still be a short while before they’d actually reached Sumeru city, long enough for him to return to his home in the rainforest, or just to find shelter anywhere, but he stayed rooted where he was. The pending storm carried a wind that was relieving in contrast to the desert’s heat and the rainforest’s humidity. The smell of rain was already present, even though it has yet to fall, and there was some sort of static in the air that made Sethos somewhat excited about the incoming storm. He should seek shelter, just like how everyone around him is doing, but nah… It doesn’t rain often in the desert, so now that he goes to the rainforest freely, he cherishes every downpour. He should probably go home and prepare himself a cup of coffee, and listen to rain tapping on the roof, feel a gentle breeze coming through ever so slightly opened windows, but feeling the cool drops of water that mother nature gifts is just so much better. Besides, he’s waiting for Wanderer to finish his classes. Once they’re together, if Wanderer wishes to do so, they can go back home and hide from the rain. He could hear the sound of multiple doors opening faintly behind him, and right when that happened, did the storm set in. A singular drop of rain had made it onto Sethos’ bare arm before he got into the Akademiya. The area at the entrance was already full of students, some glancing at Sethos for being both recognisable and easy to glance at due to the fact that he’s not wearing an uniform, but most students were looking defeatedly at the now harsh pouring rain outside.

“Sethos,”

Said man turned to his left, where the call had come from, and his beloved came into his sight. The brunette couldn’t help the smile that formed on his face. “Wan!” He greeted the other as he approached him, shamelessly giving him a peck on his cheek.

Wanderer’s right eye squinted due to the closeness of the other. “We’re in public,” He said, but did nothing as Sethos took a hold of one of his hands.

“How was it today?” Sethos asked, always curious, and good at brushing over things he didn’t want to go into any deeper (or things that he just didn’t care about, in this case).

“Fine,” Wanderer replied simply, walking towards the exit. “There was a discussion about the Temple of Silence, actually. It got to a point that makes us have to do research on it.” He sighed, clearly tired of a try-hard classmate that had caused this to happen.

“Oh!” Sethos squeaked. “Well, I have to go back there next week, so maybe you could come with me, depending on how long you have for the assignment? Do some fieldwork, haha.”

Wanderer didn’t respond, he just stopped walking right before they got outside, looking at the outdoors. The rain was really going at it; thick droplets fell rapidly, having no mercy for anything or anyone still outside. It was so heavy that it almost looked as if the world had a slight grey filter over it.

Sethos took one more step before he realised that the other had stopped walking. “Not a fan of the rain?” he asked with a slight tilt of his head.

Wanderer grumbled before responding. “It doesn’t bother me.”

It does. Sethos thought, but dared not to say it out loud. “Well, if it doesn’t bother you… should we go, then?” As he spoke, his smile turned more mischievous. An idea formed in his head. He will likely get murdered over it, but it’s too fun to not do it.

Wanderer looked like he was going to object, but before he could speak up, he let out an involuntary yelp upon being pulled forward. Rain started to fall on him rapidly, splashing against the wood of his bare hands and wrists, soaking his uniform and drenching his hair. “Sethos!” He shouted to no avail. The man that was pulling him let out a laugh, one that turned into full on laughter shortly after the first sound was released from his throat. Wanderer could only follow as Sethos turned to him and also grabbed his other hand, twirling the both of them around (as if they were in one of those spinning cup rides) under the thick curtains of rain that refused to stop drenching them. “Sethos!” He repeated, this time more annoyed, but who was he kidding? He wasn’t going to be listened to. He forced his feet to keep up as Sethos spun them around, right there on the first platform down from the Akademiya, visible to whoever was looking through the windows and doors at the front.
Wanderer didn’t do anything but looked annoyed at his boyfriend as the man stopped spinning them and opted for pulling them closer before pushing away again, and then raising one of Wanderer’s hands to make him twirl by himself (Sethos' arm controlled him). There wasn’t any music, it was just them. They were dancing to nothing. Either that, or they were dancing to the noise of the heavy rainfall and the gusts of wind passing by. Wanderer knows that it should feel awkward and weird to not dance to anything, but if that was true, then why does he not feel like that? Why is he getting a bubbly feeling building in his chest? Why is his core responding to this humiliating scene with joy? He didn’t get it. But maybe he didn’t have to get anything at this moment. Perhaps the only thing he should get is the man who’s forcing him to dance right where all his classmates can see him and not give a damn about the fact that they were doing this so openly. That sounded good…
Sethos pulled him back to him, their chests touching, and Wanderer saw the raw joy and amusement in his partner’s face; his vibrant green eyes looked like they could blind someone with the sparkles in them, and his mouth was set in the most adorable smile Wanderer has ever seen on him. How could he be annoyed at this guy?
The brunette pulled them apart once again, but didn’t let go of Wanderer’s hands. Instead, he went back to spinning the both of them around- Hell, he started skipping! Wanderer did not succumb to the other’s movements, but he still allowed himself to be spun around. He could feel a smile form on his face, but rather than it being made out of joy, it was made out of fondness, probably also love, because this silly guy that he called his boyfriend was dancing with him in the rain. Their bodies were getting absolutely soaked, but neither could care. They only cared about the fact that they were together. They continued whatever stupid, inaccurate dance Sethos came up with on the spot, and only quit when Sethos got dizzy from all the spinning (which took a surprisingly long time), and when they both deemed their dance to be concluded. They refused to let go of each other, keeping hands intertwined as they ran towards Sethos’ place not too far away from the Akademiya. Once they’d made it, they bathed together, soaking in much more comfortable water, and they spent time on Sethos’ couch until the storm ceased, and then some more until it was about time to sleep, and then even more when they woke up.

Notes:

One of the reasons why I like the rain is because Sethos convinced me to like it. Just him being a rain enjoyer and me being Dutch and having lived in my homeland my whole life so far and getting hit by rain quite a lot of times throughout my life made me appreciate it more. I always say “You’re Dutch” to my friends and family when they complain about the rain (saying “you’re Dutch” in this scenario is like telling them that they shouldn’t care because they’re already so used to the rain), and meanwhile I used to also not like it (So basically “you’re Dutch” was also an attack at myself), but now I actually enjoy it, purely because Sethos changed my mindset haha. I remember one time when I was getting to my bike after school and there was a large puddle in front of the stalls, and then suddenly my ex-best friend and I were splashing and dancing in that puddle with our shoes off. I want to do that again sometime.
