Guang watched as its partner presided—and with the grace Hai watched everyone, presided was the only accurate word for xir—over the control room of xir new intergalactic spaceship. It was beautiful, a fully vetted and staffed gift from the Monarch Se’el in return for Blessings of Speed and Safety over Se’el’s fleet of trading ships. They were on their way to her galaxy now, traveling in absolute comfort.
Hai's ear twitched as xi heard Guang come toward xir. xi reached out and felt Fern’s presence and the presences of those around her, before turning xir attention to Guang, only to start away at the sound of a scampering from a far air vent. Hai focused xir attention toward the feeling being, following their soul away from the control room, resting rooms, and into the space between two far storage rooms, where they joined with other small presences.
Hai opened xir black eyes and turned towards Guang.
“There are ones who are not mine, ones who are not Se’el’s either. I shall observe.”
Hai set Guang in the middle of the control room, better to be safe, and reached towards Fern again. Also safe.
Hai followed the fading connection between xirself and the being. As xi approached, the feeling fled from xir. They were moving not along the pathways, but through vents and spaces in between. When Hai arrived at the storage rooms, xi carved open the walls to find the empty space where the beings were.
All that was there was a note reading, “thanks for the food” in a messy human script.
There were humans in xir walls!
