Work Text:

Caroline has only ever heard of Stefan’s best friend Lexi but from everything she’s heard about her it has made her believe that she’s going to like her and Stefan says that she’s going to like her.

Nervousness gnaws at her as the date for the party and subsequently Lexi visiting Mystic Falls gets closer and closer. She wants to make sure that she’s going to like her so rather than going to Stefan who would know for sure if she’s going to like her but would definitely lie to make her feel better she instead goes to Elena who she knows met her once.

After ensuring that no one would be interrupting them Caroline tries to subtly bring the topic up which she knows that she sucks at but she’s got to try. “So… you met Lexi right?”

Elena nods looking extremely confused on why she was asking.

“I was just wondering what’s she like? Because you know she is the best friend of one of my best friends so I thought that I should get to know more about her.” She rambles, she knows, she just couldn’t stop herself from doing it and the nervousness she was feeling certainly didn’t help.

“You want to know if she’s going to like you, don’t you?”

Caroline hesitates before answering. “Yes but I also just want to know more about her…”

“Right… well I don’t actually know much about her but from what I’ve heard and seen she is a lot like you as in she has a near perfect control of her blood-lust and she’s pulled Stefan from the edge of human blood for years.”

“Okay…” She really wants to ask if she thinks that Lexi will like her but she refrains from it.

Elena gives her a look before saying, “You can ask.”

“Do you think that she’s going to like me?” Caroline chews on her bottom lip a nervous habit she didn’t grow out of after becoming a vampire.

“I think that she’s going to love you, both for the way that you pull Stefan from the edge of drinking human and also for you.”

“Okay I have nothing to be worried about? So I don’t have to be worried about her not liking me.”

“I think that you are going to be yourself and she’s going to love you.”

“Okay okay well that’s a relief.”

“You were working yourself into a spiral weren’t you?”

“So what if I was?”

“Nothing nothing at all.” Privately Elena thought that she’s never seen Caroline in a this worried state and just over meeting someone.

Well Elena had definitely snitched about her poking and prodding around for information on Lexi because the next time she saw Stefan he immediately asked about the party he was planning for her and that Caroline was helping him on because she’s got plenty of experience of planning events.

“So were you going to tell me that you’re nervous about meeting Lexi?”

“Me? nervous nooo never.”

Stefan levels her one of his ‘are you serious?’ looks that always makes her give in to him when she doesn’t want to tell him something but he insists on knowing.

Caroline sighs, “Fine okay maybe I am just a little nervous about meeting Lexi.”

“You don’t have to be nervous, she’s going to love you.” He reassures her already knowing that Lexi will just adore her.

“Okay well for some reason I don’t believe that, I mean I’m just bitchy little insecure Caroline.” She replies bitterly wondering what there even could be to love about her, “What is there to love about me?”

“There’s a lot to love because for starters you are kind even if you don't believe that and you are so refreshingly optimistic about everything. You make me a better person and you’re you that’s why we love you.”

By the end of his words Caroline’s tearing up and launching herself into his arms. “I love you.”

“I love you too Caroline.” Stefan returns her hug almost crushing her bones with how tight he was holding her, not that she’s complaining actually she’s quite thankful for it, “You really have nothing to be worried about with Lexi trust me she is going to love you.”

“Okay I believe you.” Caroline says her voice barely above a whisper but doubt still crept in.

Finally the day of the party has arrived which means that Lexi is coming Today. This of course has nothing to do with why she’s going around making sure that everything is going just as planned for the party also maybe to distract her from thinking about how she’s about to meet her best friends best-est friend.

Caroline has been deliberately trying not to think about today because if she did then she was going to panic over the idea that Lexi may not like her when she meets her because what if she thinks that she’s stealing her best friend?!

She voices as mush to Stefan in a panicked frenzy but he just laughs before reassuring her with the same words he always used by telling her that Lexi is going to love her, she’s still not sure she believes that but he would obviously know better than her.

She just really wants Lexi to like her because Stefan is one of her best friends and she doesn’t want his best friend to hate her because for one it would make things awkward to say the least.

After awhile she hears Stefan call out that ‘Lexi’s here!’ on his way past he stops at her side asking worriedly, “You ready for this?”

Caroline pushes her nervousness down in favour of smiling. “I am so ready to meet your super awesome blonde best friend Lexi!”

Stefan pats her shoulder returning her smile before going off to actually get Lexi inside.

She eyes the bottle of alcohol before shrugging and pouring herself a drink to prepare herself for meeting the vampire that she’s heard so much about and yet knows frighteningly little about.

“Woah already drinking? This is certainly my type of party.”

Caroline chokes slightly on the liquid, she looks to her side only to see Stefan with his arm over another Blonde who must be Lexi, the one she’s panicked over meeting so much.

She doesn’t have any time to panic over it, she does manage to put the bottle down though, as Stefan puts his other arm over her shoulder pulling her over to them. “I told you Caroline is the best of the best at planning parties.”

“And it seems like you weren’t wrong about that.” She says looking around at the now decorated Salvatore Boarding House letting out a low impressed whistle. “I love what you’ve done with the place.”

“It was all Caroline.” Stefan brags and then defends himself when Lexi slips his arm off of her shoulder and steps back turning to look at him with crossed arms and an upset look, “I helped!”

Caroline finally gets the chance to properly look at her and oh she’s really pretty, her eyes are this adorable brown colour that reminds her of a bunny and her hair was just lovely.

“Okay good because I’d hate for my best friend to have not helped on the party he’s throwing for me.”

“Caroline really wanted to work on it and kind of took charge.” He explains how Caroline ended up mostly planning the party.

“Hmm so you’re the type who likes to be in control.” Lexi says turning to look Caroline up and down with an evaluating look.

Lexi.” Stefan says a warning tone to his voice.

She rolls her eyes. “Chill out Stef.”

He reluctantly backs down not wanting her to make Caroline uncomfortable but when he looks at her she’s glowing a soft red colour and seems like she’s actually enjoying the type of attention that Lexi’s giving her. Huh, well he wasn’t expecting that.

“It is so good to finally meet you Caroline I’ve heard a lot about you from Stef here.” Lexi smiles putting her hand out for Caroline to shake. “You’re much prettier than he described.”

“It’s great to finally meet you too.” Caroline says feeling unexpectedly shy when faced with one of the prettiest ladies she’s ever seen as she takes the hand offered to her.

Lexi turns Caroline’s hand around so she can lay a kiss on the back of it.

“I’ll just leave you two alone.” Stefan awkwardly shuffles out of the room after removing his arm from around Caroline’s shoulder.

Caroline’s face reddens with the kiss and even more because of Stefan abandoning her with a pretty lady who seems intent on flustering her to death.

“That’d be perfect Stefan.” Lexi tells him sounding pleased.

Caroline’s never… had a girl be interested in her this way before or at least this is the first time a girl has openly flirted with her, she doesn’t quite know how to respond to it.

“You’re new to this aren’t you?” Lexi noticed because of course she noticed.

“Flirting? No. A pretty lady flirting with me? Yes.”

“Oh? So I’m pretty.” Lexi says batting her pretty little eyelashes at her.

“Really pretty.” Caroline finds herself saying even though she’s nervous even more nervous than she was to actually meet her because what if she says the wrong thing like she usually does, she wants whatever this is to go well.

“Aw thanks, you’re really pretty too. I can’t believe Stefan’s been keeping you from me.” Lexi says lamenting the fact that she could’ve met her sooner if Stefan had just let them.

They both hear the distant calling of, “I was not keeping her from you!” from Stefan who must’ve been eavesdropping on them, they are vampires after all and the hearing can be a bit hard to control at times.

“So what!” Lexi yells back at him.

Stefan huffs from wherever he is in the boarding house, “Unbelievable…”

“Anyways tell me about yourself Caroline.” Lexi says grabbing hold of her hand to tug her onto the couch.

“Oh usually it’s me getting people to talk, this is a refreshing change.” Caroline says slightly surprised before she shrugs it off and lets out a little laugh.

“Let me start, when did you turn into a vampire?”

“Only a few months ago.”

“Was it Damon? Because if it was, I’m going to murder him.”

“It was his blood in my system but Katherine was the one who killed me. Wait now I’m curious, how did you turn?”

“Uhm..” Lexi hesitates like she’s never talked about it before but she straightens up and begins to talk, “Well I was caught in an alleyway one day and was being robbed when the person threatening me lost their nerve and accidentally pulled the trigger. They put a bullet in my head, I died instantly.”

“I’m so sorry that happened to you.” Caroline apologies feeling terrible that happened to her and it’s knowing from experience that has her saying, “I know what it’s like to get a bullet to the head.”

“It hurts a lot doesn’t it? I didn’t feel it the first time but after becoming a vampire well hunters are everywhere once they know who and what you are.” Lexi tells her remembering the first time hunters had caught onto who she was and how she had to run fast to escape.

“I understand that well, this is Mystic Falls after all.” Caroline laughs a bitter laugh as she fights off the memory of burning flesh that she feels will forever haunt her.

“Yeah I don’t understand why anyone lives in this town, especially vampires.” Lexi’s voice was filled with disbelief as she shook her head.

“I don’t think most people know why either but the reason I’m still here is because my Mom’s here and even though she wasn’t very fond of vampires in the beginning she’s come around to it for me.”

“Oh your Mom’s a hunter?”

“Yep.” Caroline then adds, “Part of the council.”

“And… it ended up okay?” Lexi asks sounding confused and concerned.

“At first she was insistent that I was a monster that had replaced her daughter but after she spent some more time with me that she realised that I was standing right in front of her the whole time.” Caroline explains hating remembering the days in which her mom didn’t even want to see her.

“I’m really glad that ended up okay for you.”

“Me too.” She couldn’t imagine what she would do if her Mom didn’t end up accepting her, “God I was so terrified at the idea of her finding out what I was but it turns out that all she needed was me being myself to come around to it.”

“You were scared for a good reason, I’ve seen what hunters do the vampires that they catch.” Lexi remembers the first time she saw the remains of a vampire that had been left behind by hunters, it was as horrifying as it was eye opening about what could happen to her if she was caught.

“I’m sorry that you had to see that.”

“Don’t be, it taught me the important lesson of not getting caught.”

“Still it must’ve been terrible to see.” Caroline insists and Lexi suddenly understands why Stefan crumbles under those adorable baby blue eyes because she feels like she would do anything for the one behind them.

“You’re right it was but onto happier topics, such as where you got that wonderful dress?” Lexi’s eyes roam up and down Caroline’s body.

Caroline visibly brightens up with the change in topic excited to talk about it. “Oh thank you, I got it from—”

Lexi had clearly chosen the right topic, god her voice was beautiful she could listen to her talk all day, she only wished that they could’ve met sooner; she blames Stefan for keeping her from her and also Damon for trying to kill her making it so couldn’t stay for long enough to be able to meet Caroline who was hosting the party.

She snaps out of her thoughts and goes back to being focused on Caroline who’s gorgeous blue eyes were shining as she spoke. It was breathtaking just how good she looks in that yellow dress with the matching wedges that has lavender flowers painted on the side of them.

“Did you paint those flowers yourself?” She couldn’t help but ask.

Caroline looks at her shoes, “Oh I did actually! Entirely freehanded too.”

“That’s impressive, how did you get into painting exactly?”

Caroline shuffles around slightly nervous to give her answer. “Bit of a weird answer but I actually got an interest in painting after Klaus showed me some of his paintings.”

A pause.

“Like THE Klaus.”

“The Klaus.” She confirms.

Lexi’s eyebrows fly up in shock. “Woah, how did that happen?”

“Well he came into town because of the curse, a bunch of stuff happened and he started to fancy me apparently.”

“You got the Klaus to… like you?”

“Mhm somehow even though I was plain rude to him.”

“Maybe he liked it, a pretty girl being mean to him.” Lexi suggests a pleasant tone reaching her voice before she tells her, clearly teasing her, “I would.”

“You know he did seem to just enjoy any bit of attention that I was willing to give to him which was most of the time me being rude.” Caroline considers her words her cheeks turning red with her words of ‘I would’ implying she finds her pretty and would enjoy her being rude to her.

“So… did you ever?” She was clearly asking if she’d ever done anything with Klaus which she hasn’t.

“Nope not even close.”

“C’mon you can’t have not been a little curious.”

“I wasn’t.”

“I’ll let that lie slid.”

“I’m not lying Lexi!” Caroline says laughing before falling silent, “Okay maybe I might’ve been the slightest bit curious when he offered to take me around the world with him."

“And you said no!” Lexi exclaims surprised that she would say no to that type of offer, “Not that I’m not glad you said no but you said no to that type of offer!”

“It was tempting but my friends need me here and I could never leave my mother here knowing that I’m immortal and she’s not and that even if I was to offer to turn her she never would.” Caroline confesses and explains her reasoning for staying in this possibly cursed town.

“A very sweet reason for you to stay here. I perfectly understand your decision.” Lexi tells her understanding clear on her face leading Caroline to believe that she may have been forced to make the same decision at some point.

“I didn’t get along with my mom for a long time and I want to just make sure that I can spend all the time I can with her before...” Caroline starts and Lexi finishes for her, “…she dies.”

Caroline just barely manages to nod.

“Hey, it’s gonna be okay.” Lexi rests her soft hand on her shoulder shuffling closer to her on the couch until their thighs are pressed together, “Besides it’s gonna be a long time before that happens, right?”

“Mhm yeah it will be.” Caroline smiles grateful that she had distracted her from her thoughts. “Thanks.”

“Anytime.” Lexi says knocking her elbow against hers.

Blue meets brown and they get lost in each other’s eyes for apparently quite a long time as Stefan’s voice is what knocks them out of their daze. “Uhm Are you two okay down there?”

“We’re fine Stef!” Lexi says looking away from those gorgeous blue eyes and tearing her hand off of her shoulder even though she really wants to keep touching her.

“Phew I thought I was gonna have to come down there.”

“Have you been listening this whole time?” Caroline asks in a demanding tone after she looked away from Lexi.

“Not really, I just got concerned because I hadn’t heard faint voices for awhile.”

“Okay well go back to not listening.”

“Chill.”

They then both turn to each other and go to apologise.

“Sorry—”

“Sorry about—”

“Wait you go first.”

“I was just trying to say sorry about that.” Caroline says with a sheepish smile.

“I was trying to say the same thing.” Lexi laughs because what a coincidence that was.

“Really?” Caroline says with the tinniest hint of suspicion as if she suspected her of just playing with her.

“I was really about to say that.”

“I guess Stefan wasn’t lying when he said that we were really similar in personality.”

“He said that?” Lexi asks surprised.

“Yep.”

“Well surely he mentioned that you’re my type.” She says wiggling her eyebrows at her.

Caroline giggles, “He didn’t, I don’t think he was even aware that I’m into women.”

“It takes one to know one.”

“Indeed, I don’t think I’ve ever been clocked that fast by anyone.”

“Does anyone else know?” Lexi asks just curious to know if anyone else is aware.

“My best friend Bonnie knows and that’s it really.”

“You haven’t told your Mom yet?” Lexi asks with a sympathetic tone like she knew what it was like and she definitely would being alive in the 1600’s which was not a good time for homosexuality, not that it’s particularly seen well in the 2000’s, it’s still so much better though.

Caroline sucks a breath in, “Nope I haven’t and I’m not entirely sure I want to.”

“Why not?”

“Well first off my Dad’s a gay man who divorced my Mom leaving on not good terms.”

“But why does that mean that you shouldn’t tell her? Your Mom seems to be quite accepting. She’s accepted you being a vampire, who she’s been taught to hate, so why shouldn’t she accept you liking girls?” Lexi reasons with her.

“You have a good point there.”

“I think you just have to go for it.”

“Okay I think I’m going to tell her.” Caroline bites her lip in nervousness, Lexi puts her hand on her knee and squeezes hoping to calm her down a bit. She couldn’t believe that she was being convinced into this but she’s right why hide this part of her when her mom’s already accepted the part that she was taught to hate.

“It’ll all be okay and if not you can always just come with me.” Lexi jokes nudging her arm. Caroline laughs lightly at her joke, it actually making her feel better in some way.

Lexi smiles her goal of making her smile having been reached. It was just a very pleasant side affect that she looks really good laughing, her lips form this shape she can’t even begin to describe but it’s beautiful and she could just study the shape of Caroline’s face forever. For the rest of her life.

She blinks and suddenly Caroline concerned face is directly in front of hers. “Are you okay, Lexi?”

“I’m more than fine with you here.” She flirts.

“I have a question, are you actually being serious with this flirting or?”

“Honey, I’m more than serious.”

“You’re actually interested in me?”

“Yes,” Lexi says reaching out putting her hands on either side of Caroline’s face holding her like she’s some sort of precious thing. She doesn’t know who leans in first but someone does and then they kiss. It’s not a rough kiss, it's actually rather gentle.

It’s a mindless activity kissing but the first thought that Caroline is able to process is that her lips are soft and warm. It’s also her first kiss with a girl it was far better than she’d imagined.

Lexi breaks the kiss apart and Caroline whines with the need to keep going but the one thing that she does is push Caroline down onto her back on the couch get on top of her and push their lips back together.

Caroline moans into the kiss being able to feel Lexi’s thighs on either side of her hips. Lexi takes her lips off of hers and presses slow kisses to the side of her neck leaving bright red lipstick marks behind.

Caroline wishes that this could continue forever so of course that is when they are interrupted by the door to the boarding house slamming open because no one can ever just open the door normally and quietly.

Lexi sits up on top of her looking to see who just walked in she groans at the sight of Damon. “Seriously? You just had to interrupt us.”

“Wow, you look like you had a good time.” Damon smirks at the sight of her smudged lipstick it being very clear what she was just doing. He wiggles his eyebrows,“You should’ve waited for me and then we all could’ve had fun.”

“Yeah as if!” Lexi scoffs getting off of Caroline pausing to straighten her now wrinkled dress before she strolls past Damon leaving with only a short goodbye call. “Call me sexy!”

Caroline lays there trying to regain her bearings because her face is burning red and she’s trying her hardest to get her heartbeat back to a normal level before she has to face Damon.

When she does sit up she hears the shocked call of “Vampire Barbie!?” from him.

“Yep, you don’t have to shout about it.” She grumbles unhappy that he had interrupted them.

He sputters for a long time, “You—I didn’t know you liked…”

“You didn’t know I liked girls, well you’re not special there the only one who knows is Bonnie; not even my mom knows.” Caroline tells him while glaring at him.

“You haven’t told her?” He asks with disapproval.

“Don’t take that tone with me. It is frankly none of your business who I have and haven’t told.” She tells him off unable to believe that he was even trying to be authoritative over this which has nothing to do with him.

“Okay.”

“Not that it’s any of your business I am planning on telling her today.”

“That’s good.” Damon nods like he’s telling her good job before he zooms off to who knows where after snatching the bottle of alcohol Caroline had opened earlier.

“Asshole…” Caroline mutters glaring at where he last stood.

Not long after Stefan comes down the stairs walking over to her looking all smug as he tells. “See I told you that you would get along.”

“Shut up…” She says shoving him.

She ignores his laughing as she leaves the Salvatore Boarding House.

Later Caroline sits down to have a conversation with her Mom talking about her interest in both boys and girls. It ends with them both in tears as her mom reassures her that nothing could change her love for her.

It is only when she is getting ready for bed that she remembers Lexi said to call her and she forgot to ask Stefan for her phone number.

However luckily for her when she wakes up there is an envelope waiting for her, she opens it and on it is a phone number with a call me and a winky face saying — Lexi at the end.

A soft blush and smile takes over her face.
