Scott ran his thumb up and down Jimmy’s hand intertwined with his, revelling in his warmth. This was real, he reminded himself. The watchers were gone, thanks to the Villies work, and they were safe. Scott just needed to relax and enjoy the moment.
Jimmy smiled reassuringly at him, sensing his anxiety. All of them had been coping with the aftermath of the battle, though some of them had been doing better than others. Jimmy had adapted far better then he had, though he’d been through far more then he ever had been. While the battle had been scary, it had hardly been the first time his canary had seen death.
Scott, however, couldn’t get the glassy look of the dead watchers eyes out of his mind, splatters of blood appearing in all of his nightmares. He constantly awoke in the night from the horrors of visions and memories that were far too much for any of them.
Jimmy saw his discomfort, and Scott always awoke with his canary holding him, curling around him as if trying to make space for his missing wings. Maybe in another life they would have been shining and golden, but here in this world, they’d been lost.
Now that they had finally dealt with the unrest in the city, Scott wanted to do Jimmy right and take him on a date. They had to wait for the city to rebuild and the new parliament to be put in place before he could even consider anything of the sort.
But finally, finally they were free.
Scott knew that Jimmy had never had the chance to just enjoy himself, and Scott hadn’t had free time in years. It was a novel sensation, walking the streets with no one calling out for help – no one even recognised them. Their secret identities had helped Scott coax Jimmy on this date.
They were going to a small Italian restaurant, on the corner of an old street barely I the central business district. They used to have Scott’s favourite pizza’s, cheesy sauce and absolutely loaded with garlic.
They rounded a corner on a newly busy street, the chatter starting to get to Jimmy, and he dropped his shoulder on Scott’s. He did his best to let him rest while walking, continuing to rub Jimmy’s hands. What a dream his life was now – he had everything he wanted, but mainly he had Jimmy.
Just a year ago, this would have been a dream, an impossible event, yet Jimmy was here. Scott was tempted to pinch himself.
“Shall we go inside?” Jimmy asked carefully as they arrived outside the Italian and Scott stopped. He nodded stiffly, but his head was still to far gone to sleep. He was so out of it right now.
Jimmy seemed to clock his state however and gently led him inside. Scott managed to blush slightly out of embarrassment at his situation. He should be the one taking Jimmy, not the other way round!
“It’s ok…” Jimmy promised, seemingly sensing his self-hatred bubbling up. Jimmy was far too good for him, being able to read him far too well.
“I’m sorry.” Scott whispered, squeezing Jimmy’s hand tighter. “ I just wanted to take care of you tonight.” The words were pouring out of his mouth with little regard to what they were.
“Poppy…” Jimmy looked sadly at him, letting go of his hand to squeeze him into a tight hug. “It’s fine to let me take care of you.”
“But-“
“No buts mister. We got through this together and we can look after each other now.” Jimmy scolded him, and Scott blushed at his boyfriends lecture.
“Take a deep breath.” Jimmy assured him, as they were led to a table. He must have told the waiter his name. Scott was really out of it.
They sat down at a candlelit table, Jimmy shuffling their chairs closer together. Scott couldn’t resist the temptation and leaned into his boyfriends mouth.
“I love you Jimmy.” Scott whispered, falling into Jimmy’s chest. He felt his canary smile when he kissed his forehead. Scott didn’t even care he was in public; he was just happy he actually had Jimmy.
“I love you too Poppy.” Scott kissed him again, twisting his head awkwardly for it to happen.
At least he knew every time he failed like he had today, his canary would be there to catch them.
