Work Text:
Jester is reading up on how humans are supposed to eat, seeing as you told him you could eat just about anything that is edible, much like them, and its pretty late but he doesn't have a show today so he's taking this time to learn more about just what they let into the circus. His eyes are feeling heavy but he keeps reading and eventually he falls asleep, the book landing softly on his face as his arm slowly gives out.
About 15 minutes later, Ticket Taker, Pierrot, Doctor, and you are all walking up to his tent. He's still asleep but they all send you in since you're the smallest and thus have the lightest footsteps just idly. They are all peaking in and notice the signs that he's been asleep for a while. You turn around and signal for them to leave and they all look a bit worried but trust you enough to not be peaking into the tent with whatever you're going to do.
You sigh quietly as you shake your head at how hard Jester feels the need to push himself for his family. You purposely silence your footsteps and make your way over to his bed, grabbing a blanket off the edge of it so you don't mess up his well made bed. You check to see if the fabric is soft, which it is, and then you walk back to his chair. You drape it over him, making sure to cover him as best as possible with the blanket.
You are about to touch the book when you realize that it might be too bright for him to stay asleep so you turn off the lights. Luckily, Your eyes adjust quickly to the dark so you can see right now, just in black and white with some light cyan tint, most likely from the moon outside. You take the book off his face carefully, making sure to hold the page he was on, leaving a 20 in the book as a bookmark since you don't really have use of it right now.
You turn away from him, looking for a nearby place to put the book, not noticing that Jester woke slightly. He's a bit confused as all the lights are off, you're the only one in the room and he now has a blanket over him. You close the book and he lays his head back down, pretending to sleep so that he can see what you're doing in his room. You turn back to him and lay the book facing him on his lap before walking over to the kitchenette he has and grabbing a glass.
You fill it with water and put just a little ice in so that when he wakes up, the water will be nice and cold. You leave it on his counter and walk to the door, whispering. "Sleep well.."
After you leave, he sits up and notices you walked in solely to make him more comfortable after he fell asleep. There was no one else in there so if humans were as cruel as he thought, you would've tried to hurt him. Maybe you're the exception to that rule. If you acted like this and no one was watching, maybe he had jumped to conclusions when assuming how you would interact with them.
Later, he goes to find everyone, to try to see if you had told them you were going to do that. Ticket taker, Doctor, and Pierrot, all just said that you had signalled that he was busy and told them to let him rest. Harlequin apparently wasn't there for it which means that you did that because you wanted him to be comfortable in his rest. He tells Ticket Taker to make sure you're safe every once in a while, having gotten interested in you, and a little attached to the only nice human he's met.
